Sometimes LE likes to watch the funeral and see who comes so maybe that is the next part of their investigation. Maybe they have like a person in mind and want to watch them at the funeral.

Hi PIM, Welcome to this thread, haven't seen you on this one much so you are probably not up to speed on some of the specifics. Here's the nutshell of events regarding teh photo thing ;)

Regarding the family, they released some limited photos of Leila when this first happened and then were a bit upset that MSM had somehow gotten hold of many many more photos of Leila and they were being plastered all over the national news. This upset the family, who were literally still absorbing this loss and what has happened.

Unfortunately I suspect they have also been reading the topix and comments beneath articles which are saying, well, you can imagine, negative things about the family or implying things about Leila's murder.

I know in lots of cases we post pics of the victim onthread, but in THIS case, out of respect for the family we are trying to avoid posting any so we can be certain we are not posting unauthorized ones.

NO WAY you could know that if you didn't catch that part of the thread when it came up.

Hi tlcya. :seeya: You're correct; I'm a latecomer to this thread and missed all that about MSM getting all those photos of Leila. :( I've been buried in the Boston Marathon thread and decided to come up for air...so to speak. (Not sure if this thread is necessarily less depressing.)

My picture posted wasn't of the victim--it was one of 40 taken of the family and mourners by record.net (news) at the public candlelight memorial service. I thought they were very respectfully done, and beautiful, in a sad way. But, I'm happy to leave it off here in the chance they might not like to see it in here (if they did).

Thanks for giving me the scoop!

Dee10, I agree--great news about the dogs! This article even said they could even sniff out "microscopic" bits of blood. Amazing. I'm a huge dog-lover and this just makes me an even bigger fan.

The grass surrounding the home where the murder occurred was trimmed over the past few days, and Hewitt said that was to “help the humans” look for clues. A special dog team is being flown in from Washington, D.C., to help in the investigation. The K9s are trained to detect the smallest droplets of blood, Kuntz said.
“I feel if there’s still blood in the house, it’s microscopic and the dogs will pick it up,” he said.
Why the house and entire road are still blocked off from the public was a point of contention at the conference. One reporter said it has been nine days since the child’s murder and it seems like a long time to still be processing the scene.
“We’re talking about the murder of an 8-year-old girl,” Hewitt shot back. “We have to be thorough.”
“We’re making progress each day,” Kuntz said Sunday of the investigation, adding the ongoing effort is “purposeful and focused.”
“A few things are getting close,”
he continued, though he declined to elaborate.

Interesting discovery about the ponds; they're not deep--just very, very murky (read elsewhere) so that it's like searching in the dark.

The ponds are only about four feet deep, but water conditions are less than ideal.

I wouldn't say there's been that many pictures of Leila in the media. I think I've only seen about 10 pictures, which isn't much compared to other cases. The media has a lot of tricks they use to make it look like they have more pictures than they do, like showing a full-body picture and then cropping it so it's a face picture.

Here are some stories about the case where under the picture it says it's from the family:

I honestly don't understand why any family of a missing/murdered child would read online comments. What is the point? There are going to be people speculating about who is guilty, offensive comments, etc.

I don't see why you couldn't post a picture from the candlelight vigil. It was open to the public and to the media. There were 1000 people there, and any gathering of that size is going to have media taking pictures and videos. It would be different if we were talking about pictures from the private service.

I agree, but it sounds like this family maybe has an unpredictable response to photo-sharing (in that, from the posts I've now read, some are not appreciated). So WS is likely just being careful, here.

I agree PIM, I think WS, Tricia and SoSueMe are just exercising caution and trying to respect the family's wishes to the utmost especially in light of all the minor siblings. We are keeping their names and images off the thread. Probably the wisest course.

Though if it's pictures of L**** that have her family especially up in arms, they might be wise to consider some deleting in Thread #1 as well... ;)

It's Websleuth's policy not to share pictures of minors anyway.
The exception is when they are a deceased victim or the family has given permission. :twocents:

That picture that was posted had Leila's siblings in it, minors, who are alive.
That alone makes it not okay to post here. :twocents:

I don't think pictures of Leila are an issue.
They don't want pictures of Leila's FAMILY shared.

This is a crime against all of us

snipped

Leila Fowler is our family. We are hers. This is her community. The horrific circumstances of her death are gut wrenching for those closest to her, especially her fellow students at Jenny Lind Elementary School. They trouble the most hardened person, reaching even those who live far beyond our borders.

This is Calaveras County. This is not supposed to happen here. But it has and it does.

Websleuths does not allow pictures of minors to be posted.
(Other than the deceased victims of course.)
You will not find pictures of Leila's siblings here.
You will not find pictures of Kyron's sister here.

You will not find picture's of ANY minor siblings here.
We don't even say the NAMES of minor siblings here you guys!

That family picture included minors.
That alone prevents it from being posted.

This isn't a new rule... it's a well known rule.
I'm not understanding the confusion at all?

In addition to that, the family has requested privacy.
Just because the media isn't respecting that, doesn't mean we won't.

Just post a link to the the slideshow like we've always done. :seeya:

The post removed contained pictures of minor children. It's a steadfast rule on Websleuths, we do not post pictures of minors unless they are missing or victims of a crime.

Thanks!

Thanks for clarifyling, SoSueMe. There was confusion over the deletion (I think) b/c of mentioning the family's request for "privacy" and discussion about early MSM pictures causing the family upset. No problem, and MsFacetious has a good suggestion, if I could be allowed to post the link again:

Chico woman escapes from kidnapper in Glencoe

This appears to not be a nice guy. If I understand, he is held in Calaveras County Jail.

"Jason Tony Bays, Placerville, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, assault by means of force, threats to commit a crime resulting in death or great bodily injury and penetration by means of force or fear. He is held at the Calaveras County Jail in lieu of $1 million."

Why so euphimistic with the reporting? Keywords maybe? I often avoid keywords. Craigslist. Picked her up in Chico on 04/29. She escapes in Glencoe, about 20 mi from Rancho Calaveras. Ranged to Chico - approx 200m. That puts Davis in range.

I don't get it. An attempted infant kidnap in Placerville and connections are immediately made. But in the case, nothing thus far. Am I missing something?

It's also been reported they've "focused" on the ponds...not sure how much I'd read into that yet.

I hear you, just posting what I find (new), this was dated today at 5:23 pm.Take it with a grain-of-salt always:) I am wondering if the dogs maybe a factor though to this area?

Yeah, I get you...like when I keep posting the latest Twitter tweet, lol. I DO think the dogs may help. Call me optimistic. :)

It can be hard to keep up with the twists and turns in this case. Here's some help from Twitter:
