So she did live AT the Tannery WITH her mother? For some reason earlier, I thought she lived in the nearby apartments. Children are allowed to live at the center?

Yes, families with children can live there.

My sister is a graffiti artist in San Francisco and is in Santa Cruz collaborating on a project with a friend. She has been there about a week. I texted her to ask her about the area there. Her friend said that preference for the tannery lofts are given to those involved in local creative arts. They do criminal background checks, credit checks, rental history checks, and the tenants need income and it's continually checked up on...although it is low income housing. He said it's even no smoking. He did say that in his opinion, there are people living there who do drugs. (I guess he has contact with some of the people through various art stuff.) He said it seems like they don't really monitor or check on visitors of the tenants. There is also a lot of loitering and it's directly surrounded by some really bad stuff.

Or surely this morning when people arrived at the beach they would see tracks, trails from her scooter, her scooter or her helmet somewhere, right? The beach just doesn't work out in my mind. Maybe that is because the beach would mean so dire an outcome and I'm in denial :(

ETA Wait ... is the beach the same beach the boardwalk amusement park is on ?

ETAA Or when they say dogs followed her scent to the beach , do they mean the river bed? Which is dry , right?

BBM.
Yes it is. I have been twice, most recently last October.

"Deputy Chief Steve Clark said the case doesn’t meet the criteria to issue a statewide amber alert.

Surveillance video showed Madyson by the mailboxes at 5:05 p.m. by the living spaces near the trails by the San Lorenzo River. The Tannery sits between the river and Highway 9.

Among the groups searching are folks from Take Back Santa Cruz, a standup paddleboarding group and a group from Watsonville."

The California Highway Patrol has issued an endangered missing person advisory for Maddy in NorCal.#‎PatchCalifornia‬

I am still wondering about the playdate and the mom who called to say MM was 'missing.' That seems to be the key to what happened to her. If she was planning to go play with a friend from the complex, what time was that supposed to be and where were they supposed to meet up? MM's mom said she was outside paying under their front window. And there was surveillance video of her by the mailboxes near the complex. So what time did the mom realize that MM was not where she was supposed to be? Was she supposed to meet her friend at the mailboxes?

I think, from piecing that part together, maybe MM was hanging around on her scooter, waiting to meet her friend. And somehow she got distracted, lured, convinced to scoot away somewhere else. I hope someone saw her talking to someone to get a better idea of how that happened.

I just don't believe that she would go down to the beach alone if she had the option of being with her friend, instead. IME, 8 yr olds LOVE to be with their friends and would wait around and try to make it happen. I wonder why she scooted away and why the friends mother knew she 'was missing.'

a nationally known non-profit developer of affordable space for artists and arts organizations. In addition to the residential lofts, the community transformed five historic tannery buildings into studio space for Santa Cruz artists.

This makes a lot more sense. All of the buildings are considered " tannery'' . Her mom was at the ' arts center' perhaps when Maddy visited her but all on the same property. Or at least, I think that's what I'm reading. Right?

My sister just texted me with more info. (Sorry if this has been said already, I've not made it through all pages) According to her friend, local news reports are saying she lived at the lofts with her mother.

He said there is a homeless shelter across the way and a lot homeless around. There is also quite a bit of construction going on in the immediate area.

I think it's not that the friends mother knew she was missing. I think Maddy's mother communicated with the friends mother and realized she wasn't there with her friend. That's how I read it anyway. Like maybe the friends mother called to ask why Maddy hadn't arrived.

Dunno. These details always take a while to come out. I agree she might have been lured away. :(

From what I can gather the "arts center" is a large property comprising of different spaces. Low income housing, studio space, a theater, etc. There is apparently a courtyard type of a area in all that, with a small playground and also general outdoor space. Perhaps, that is where she was?

I think she was lured away from the beach. It's very populated, could have been anybody. It's not all just families that go there.

I read she was wearing flip flops but it appears she is wearing white shoes in the video still.

Are they referring to the "beach area" on the river bank or that actual beach (pacific ocean)?

There is an actual beach (Pacific Ocean) that is not far from River Street and extends in front of an amusement park with rides called the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. There are stairs at the Boardwalk to access the beach and viceversa. More likely Maddy was headed to the beach at the Boardwalk. It would be a huge draw for a kid.
This picture was taken Oct. 2013, looking from the Boardwalk onto the beach. (Sorry I don't know how to how to fix it being upside down).

Please let this child be found. Children should be able to play outside freely but unfortunately they cannot. I cringe when I hear a young child goes missing while out playing alone. Predators are called so for a reason and wait for opportunities where no eyes are watching. Most young kids are physically at a disadvantage and usually not equipped with cell phones or devices to communicate their location.
I would love for my little one to have the freedom to play without me having to be there but it's not that way anymore. Even with Stanger Danger classes by local police - I don't feel secure in letting her walk around the neighborhood alone or to from the bus stop... and I'm in a development where I know who lives in each house but its easy for someone to drive around and wait.

I hope more clues to her whereabout appear today - footage from cameras?? a witness, etc. Upthread someone mentioned custody and I'm wondering if anything has been documented about the marital status of her parents ?

You are wrong. Your child is safer now than you were. The good ol' days are a myth.

Some quick info about the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and general area (in case it hasn't been mentioned):

- There's no admission required to enter the Boardwalk. You only pay for rides.
- There's a large arcade and event space on the Main Beach in Santa Cruz. The arcade stays open until 10pm on Sundays along with the amusement park.
- Summer is tourist season. The area is usually pretty crowded at that time with people leaving the park or going to nearby hotels.
- The Riverway (which connects River St. to the BW) goes past San Lorenzo Park, which has a pond.

Is Maddy kind of small for her age? She looks so small in the photo on her scooter. Easily carried off .....
