For any Santa Cruz locals on here....how far away is the boardwalk amusement park away from where she went missing? My 8 year old loves it there and, if left on his own or with some adventurous friends, might try and scooter there if close enough to do so. TIA

Google says 2.3 miles, not really all that far at all. It's 10 minutes drive with stops and traffic but to cut straight across not far. Good thinking, but I would hope she would know not to go that far alone or hope that since she's lived there, shes' been multiple times and it was not enough of a lure to go on her own.

LinasK-I agree. Back in the 60's my younger brother and I while strolling our baby sister were followed to a grocery store by some creep looking out his apartment window at us. We got to the store-the creep had followed us and he exposed himself to me. I was probably 12 years old. Never told my mom.

I strongly disagree! Child predators existed back in the 60's and 70's when I was growing up, and I was even approached by a serial killer walking home alone from high school. I am proud to be a helicopter parent and my 14-year-old doesn't go anywhere all alone. I drive her, there's no reason to let your child be prey!!! That's what free-range parenting is IMO, that or laziness!!!

:goodpost:

I can't even wrap my head around how people let their kids be all alone without losing their minds in worry. I just think about kids like Jessica Ridgeway, Sandra Cantu, Jenise Wright...why take that chance??

I'm not local, but I have been there a few times. The Boardwalk is right on the same paved river trail where she was riding her scooter. The trail ends at the beach next to the Boardwalk. Reportedly, the dogs tracked her scent to the beach somewhere around that area.

If you're fully focused on keeping your child safe, don't ever let them get in a car, or get in a body of water deeper than their knees without wearing a life jacket.

I know that sounds silly, but your child is SO much more at risk from those things, than being grabbed by a stranger and murdered. And it must be terrifying in retrospect that you were approached by a serial killer - but you got away is the thing. That's what we need to teach our kids, IMHO - when they sense danger, get away fast. Studies of children who have survived stranger kidnappings show clearly that they knew they were in danger and didn't retreat because they had been taught to obey adults, or it would be socially awkward to turn and run and yell. Strangers don't chase children down who are running away and screaming - they lure them in and get them in quietly. Children should be taught - IMHO - to be bold and not obey someone just because they are an adult. I was a free range child, as probably most were in my generation, and I know the feeling of being approached by someone who means you harm. And I think almost all children can sense that. Not that there aren't some who are literally grabbed while they're walking along, but usually it's a luring process. How many times do we hear communities in an uproar because a few kids in a row have been approached by strangers inviting them into the car? Thank goodness the kids who were witnesses knew to get out of there.

Wow blazelet our posts crossed. I agree.

So at a rate of about 30:1 your child is more likely to die in a car accident than purposely at someone's hands. your child is also overwhelmingly more likely to die at their own hands (purposely or accidentally) at home than out in the world at someone else's hands.

in the unlikely event your child IS hurt purposely by someone, statistically it's most likely to be you or a close family member who does it.

It's not lazy allowing your child to enjoys friendships and community. It's living responsibly - based on the data.

If you really want to statistically improve your kids chances, stop driving them places.

Where I live kids play out alone or in groups all the time. My biggest fear is a child being hit by a car, not a predator. You can't live in fear, cases like this are rare and often kids are victims of people the family know and trust. Don't let your kids grow up afraid of the world.

Guys, take a break or a breath if you need to. This is no time to argue whether free style or extra sheltered is the right way to raise a child. It will not help find Maddy one bit to ponder these things. We don't want to get shut down . :) We all love our kids and we all parent how we feel is best depending on our own location and upbringing, etc.

maybe her and her friends decided to go down to the beach and something went wrong? Have they located these so called friends that she was with?

I agree. Pedophiles only have to be "lucky" once in their quest to abduct a child. parents have to be "lucky" every day in keeping their kids safe...jmo

This thread is not about your opinion. It is about an Amber Alert for a missing child.

I will not hesitate to come down hard if anyone turns this thread into a discussion about anything other than Madyson Middleton

Surely if she went to the beach she would have been picked up by cameras

Or surely this morning when people arrived at the beach they would see tracks, trails from her scooter, her scooter or her helmet somewhere, right? The beach just doesn't work out in my mind. Maybe that is because the beach would mean so dire an outcome and I'm in denial :(

ETA Wait ... is the beach the same beach the boardwalk amusement park is on ?

ETAA Or when they say dogs followed her scent to the beach , do they mean the river bed? Which is dry , right?

If she went straight to the beach she would've gotten there around 6 p.m.-ish. There are usually still people there at that time, and it stays light until at least 8:30... and of course, the adjacent Boardwalk stays active much later. People just don't seem to take notice of a kid alone, unless he or she is in distress.
