"Gonzalez is being tried as an adult, but after the arraignment, defense attorney Leila Sayar said her client should be granted a special hearing focusing on his background and circumstances to determine if he should be instead kept in the juvenile court system. If convicted in that court, he would be freed within a decade."

Oh heck no! He needs to be tried as an adult!!

Monday morning, Gonzalez appeared in Santa Cruz County Superior Court in Juvenile Hall-issued khaki pants and a green shirt. Charged as an adult, he appeared solemn and simply said, “Yes,” when asked if he waived his right to a speedy trial. Judge Timothy Volkmann ordered him back to court Oct. 29 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

His attorney is dreaming... no way this killer is going to be tried as a juvey and get out in 10 yrs.

Better not be. It's a given he'll reoffend if that happens. I don't believe rehabilitation is possible for anyone who can commit such a monstrous act on anyone, let alone a trusting child.

If this were even a case of a teen killing an abusive parent (even if premeditated), I would be inclined to agree for shorter sentence. Children who experience trauma can benefit from therapy and counseling and be made "right" again. (for lack of a better word)

But AG is a very disturbed person and IMO that kind of stuff can't be fixed. Some people should never be out amongst the unsuspecting public. Sad, but true.

I wonder if Madyson's mom will have any input on whether or not he is tried as an adult. My sense (from how she was responding to his mom earlier on) is that she might have a strong opinion on how he is tried.

ITA. Some should be kept away. Forever.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KTVU) - The 15-year-old accused of killing Maddy Middleton was in court in Santa Cruz Thursday morning. <snip>

He sat expressionless in court as his next court date was set.
His attorney says he'll spend the coming months building his case and getting a better understanding of his client.
The preliminary hearing for Gonzalez is set for Feb. 29th. more at link:

Anyone have any guesses why he would have decided to skip the preliminary hearing?

Because his lawyer has discover/evidence and knows there is no hope in hell the PH is going to be beneficial. JMHO.

Bumping this... hope that something happens in court on 6/14

Gonzalez will be tried as an adult.
He was 15 years old at the time of Middleton’s murder.
Since Gonzalez will be tried as an adult, his sentence will be much less lenient than if he was tried as a juvenile. If convicted, Gonzalez could face life in prison.
