NAYA RIVERA SEARCH UPDATE: The search now includes two German Shepherds from the California Rescue Dog Association. The dogs are trained to detect the gasses released by human cadavers. They will perform a methodical search along a grid of the lake to help divers locate the body.

I spoke to Sgt. Bill Hutton of VCSO for this info. He said this is a very technical search right now, going along a GPS grid. The search for Naya Rivera will go until nightfall, then the GPS data will be analyzed overnight and a new strategy will be formed by daybreak tomorrow.

I have spent alot of time on my parents pontoon boat.

We never have the ladder installed when the boat is moving and we never have the 'door' open when it is moving. Just a rule my stepdad has always had.

Ours has a ladder that once you 'install' it into the holes in the floor, it hangs into the water. My kids have been able to climb up it fairly easily themselves since a very young age (they are climbers though.)

My thought is that she jumped into the water with her son (perhaps due to 'natures call') thinking it could be just for a moment (no need for a life jacket), and maybe got tangled up in weeds below.

It sounds like the area possibly has some debris on the Lake floor. If there are weeds that come up high....it only takes a few moments to get a leg tangled up with that frightening sensation and panic.

This is a very upsetting tragedy.
My thoughts are with her family.

ETA - we also anchor the boat whenever the driver gets into the water to swim.

Just my two cents. JMO
Your stepdad sounds like us
Doors are closed, ladder is up and unhooked while pontoon is moving.
Once we are anchored, then the ladder gets hooked on and hangs down and doors can be open.
My grandkiddos can climb up and down that ladder since they were 2 yrs old .
And yes, our pontoon is always Anchored when the ladder goes in and we are out swimming or floating.

[URL='https://twitter.com/Jeremy_Childs']I am truly impressed as I have never heard of that before.

UGHGH-- Ive tried to fix this.. don't know why it shows as a link.

Just watched the security video. Wonder why she parked so far and so wonky? What the heck was that large light coloured object she was carrying overhead ? Kind of looked like a large inflatable floaty
I wondered the same thing. She didn't even try to straighten the vehicle up in the parking space and she did park a good distance from the entry point.

Found this so answers my own questions.

Authorities believe 'Glee' actress Naya Rivera drowned in California lake

Deputy Dyer said the search was suspended at 10 p.m. Wednesday because of dangerous conditions. Visibility in the water during the day was about eight to 10 inches and there was lots of debris and full-size trees under the water and "varying depths."

THIS^^^^.

I strongly suspect she got caught on some debris or tree branch.

I grew up around many lakes (Wisconsin born, here). One just never knew what was on the bottom of a lake, especially if it was a man-made lake. Rivers can be dammed up, and then the surrounding land (trees, bushes) all goes under water.

Checking Wikipedia, I see that Lake Piru is indeed man-made. So, land was flooded to make it.

Lake Piru is a reservoir located in Los Padres National Forest and Topatopa Mountains of Ventura County, California, created by the construction in 1955 of the Santa Felicia Dam on Piru Creek, which is a tributary of the Santa Clara River.

ETA: From what I've seen - and I am absolutely not an expert - the river current never goes away in a man-made lake.

Very concerning. Praying for a miracle.

After watching the surveillance video, I think it’s very possible that Naya had been drinking. I hope I’m wrong and she’s somehow alive, but that’s just my opinion and observation after watching the video.

edit: And I meant to say that I’m saying this with absolutely no judgement, but just noting that this could have contributed to this devastating situation.

I agree after watching the video that it’s possible with the way she parked so far away for no reason and also how she appears to be walking somewhat fast, leaving her son trailing behind her—these could all be signs that she may have been slightly “buzzed” before heading out in the pontoon (although I hope not )...

This seems the most logical explanation to me. On the news tonight, sorry no link at the moment, the 4 year old said he and his mom were swimming, he came back, she did not. But why haven't they found her body? I'm having a hard time believing her body floated that far away. I am a very adventurous mama and take my three boys everywhere by myself, yet this seems a little bit of a risky choice to me. I don't believe it was suicide. You can tell from her pictures how much she adores her son and I'd think she'd want better for him than to leave him stranded on a lake like that.

Just from a semi-local perspective, I wouldn’t have even thought twice about her parking over the lines.

The Angeleno weekend warrior class, particularly those that arrive at our local reservoirs in luxury vehicles, are not known for their adherence to the rules of the road.

If you even glanced at my local Trader Joe’s parking lot with the same level of suspicion, you’d have to assume every single shopper was drunk as a skunk in a moonshine still.

I doubt it's floated away, it's probably caught on something and is underneath.

It's fairly likely that whatever took her - underwater entanglement, spillway suction, hypothermic cramp or other - that her body is very near to where it went under. However, the kid was found asleep in the boat some hours after the three hour rental window had passed. The boat could have drifted anywhere in that time.

A 4 year old can and apparently did give some information about the circumstances but there's no way he could give accurate info about where on the lake the incident happened. He shouldn't be pressed for it either. Hopefully he was back in a familiar environment with family by last night.

It's not weird that the body hasn't been found yet.
This is from TMZ:

Naya Rivera Heartbreaking Surveillance Video, Presumed Dead in Drowning

'She went missing in water with only 5 to 9 inches of visibility, and authorities say the lake is filled with trees and debris on the bottom. Law enforcement says it typically takes 7 to 10 days for a body to rise to the surface.'

BBM. This doesn't make sense to me. Here is a picture of the boats you rent on this lake. A 4 year old climbed up out of the water back into this boat while his mom was still in the water? It looks like you have to pull yourself almost a foot out of the water onto the boat where the "gate" is at the end.

I believe there is a door that opens and a ladder that drops down into the water.

This is the security camera footage from the Lake Piru boat launch when Naya Rivera and her son rented a pontoon boat on Lake Piru. https://youtu.be/8SF_tHqB5YU

Thanks! I found a little more scaled down, circled & zoomed in version.
ETA: her hair is VERY long & if I’m not mistaken hanging loose...it could of caught on something down in the water .
