It seems you're forgetting that the temperature would be over 100 degrees, he was reported to be in short sleeves in the blazing sun, and he was wearing shorts. "Feeling heat" doesn't come close to the high possibility of heat stroke in these conditions. Nope, this is not an "experienced" hiker.

It seems like many times the most experienced hikers, climbers, etc. are the ones that make the dumb mistakes because they're overconfident and have gotten away with things in the past. Like the woman who died on Mt. Washington NH in the winter a few years back because she had climbed 7000-meter peaks and couldn't imagine how a mountain not even 2000 meters could be as dangerous as the mountains she knew.

He was an experienced hiker, if you define "experienced" by, well ... experience. Paul and his wife have hiked extensively throughout Canada, the US and Mexico. In fact, he hiked the same Joshua Tree trail before, and in that same heat. He was not lacking in hiking experience.

Don't forget that the morning of his disappearance wasn't intended to be a hike, but rather juat a quick nip into the park, get some pictures of sheep, and be safely back in his hotel room before two hours.

Great that photos taken of the area last year were used to accomplish this, but too bad it took so long. The article doesn't say which outside agency analyzed and pinpointed the remains or if they were specifically searching for Paul, but kudos to those researchers and all the SAR folk who dedicate their time in these efforts.

Prayers for Paul and his family and friends, wouldn't it be wonderful if he can go home to be laid to rest ❤️
While the closure is a blessing, the outpouring of grief will be no less.
God Bless them.

I also have a bit of a rant to post after this is official, but for now...just grateful good people have seemingly found poor Paul.

amateur opinion and speculation

Human remains found inside Joshua Tree National Park; no initial signs of foul play, park says

No identification was found with the remains, which appeared to have been in the area "for some time," park staff said.

Edit: added quote
And more, this is where he was hiking. Has to be Paul. BBM

"Park rangers hiked to the 49 Palms Oasis area on Friday and found the remains and personal belongings away from any trails. No identification was found with the remains, which appeared to have been in the area "for some time," park staff said."

ETA Anxious to know how he was missed all this time (or these remains were). Of course, don't know exactly where the remains were located and how near to the hiking trail or Oasis.

I wonder if drones will now be allowed in the park for rescue or recovery missions. My goodness, the family had such a struggle to be allowed to search with drones.

From the article: "The National Park Service and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department are investigating the discovery of human remains found in a remote and rocky portion of Joshua Tree National Park, according to park staff.

"The announcement was made Saturday afternoon. Park authorities were alerted Thursday about possible evidence of human remains after another agency was analyzing photographs of the area taken by drone in November."

Several of us, especially @rosesfromangels, thought he'd probably eventually be found not very far off the trail.

Sounds like this could be the closure the family has needed.

I went searching today and had no idea about this recent news. It was however good to get outdoors and go places.

Sorry, but Paul's equipment was EXTREMELY inappropriate for the conditions, and going out there at all is a sign of EXTREME inexperience, namely total disregard for risks.

Especially when it was explicitly Park Service notice NOT to go hiking in those conditions at that location. Categorically a sign of gross inexperience not to observe Park Service warnings.

Wearing black, short sleeves, and shorts, is all kinds of not experienced.

This has all been covered in detail upthread.
Dark clothes are bad, but less clothes is actually better for the heat. I live in the low desert where it is hotter than Joshua Tree, and I've been exercising outdoors for many summers. It is a complicated issue with many factors.
