The dogs lost track of Kreycik’s scent on one of the trails.

Search and rescue teams worked through the weekend, and at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, July 12, Investigations Lt. Erik Silacci reported that the search and rescue teams had just completed a briefing and were headed out again to continue the search.

“We should start hearing back in the next couple of hours as they search their designated areas. We have about close to 100 searchers from agencies throughout the Bay Area,” Silacci said. “They’ve been grouped into 20 teams, and there’s right around 13 agencies participating today.”

An extensive search is being conducted in the surrounding area. Personnel from the Pleasanton Police Department, East Bay Regional Park Police, Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol are utilizing drones, fixed wing aircraft, off-road vehicles, and search and rescue teams to locate Kreycik.

Silacci said the agencies moved their command post to Foothill High School.

Extensive Search Ongoing at Pleasanton Ridge for Missing Man

July 12 (updated)

Philip Kreycik, 37, parked his car near the Moller Ranch staging area about 11 a.m. and told his wife he was going for an hourlong run in the East Bay Regional Park.

Kreycik's wife reported him missing at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“His phone was left in his car with his ID, which is apparently normal for him. He's a pretty active runner and he's all about the speed and he doesn't like to carry a lot of things," said Lt. Chris Niederhaus.

One of the first concerns for police was the triple digit temperatures on Saturday.

One of the dogs followed his scent from his vehicle to a trail. But no farther.

....

Pleasanton police officers and personnel from East Bay Regional Park police, the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol are using drones, fixed-wing aircraft, off-road vehicles, and search and rescue teams to locate Kreycik.

Someone living in the neighborhood who doesn't want to be named shared a video. The video showed drones that were also sent up Saturday night for several hours.

By using aircraft like planes and drones, they have been able to map about half the trails in the massive park.

What is special about this park that he would drive what looks like about 33 miles (did a Google) away for a 1-hour run? And why such a late start (arrived at 11am) when we’re experiencing triple digit temperatures?

Search underway for missing runner in California

A California man is missing after he failed to return from a run in a “rugged” canyon-filled area outside San Francisco last weekend, authorities said.

Police uncovered a planned route for his run on his phone that was still in the car — but search crews have been unable to find him on the trail, news station KRON reported.

This area … is a very steep, rugged, canyon type of environment — and there’s a lot of little trails that go left and right,” Niederhaus told the outlet.

“We are concerned due to the heat. We don’t think he has a large water source,” he said.

This doesn’t answer your question about what’s special about the specific park he drove to, but it may give us an idea...

Kreycik lives in Berkeley and drove out to Pleasanton for the run. His wife called police when he never returned. The MIT grad had been running in Pleasanton before, officials said.

Police found his car in the parking lot of the trailhead with his phone inside where they discovered an app showing his running route.

He was a tech worker and a member of a local runners club.

...
It appears he’s an avid runner and has been running for quite some time now. Since he’s ran in the area before, it’s possible he’s partial to that specific terrain...maybe it offers a good place to train for an upcoming race...All assumptions of course; just throwing out ideas.

They are considering an assumption that he could have been hurt somehow while running during the heat wave. It was about 100 degrees in Pleasanton on Saturday.

On Monday morning, the search and rescue command center was moved to Foothill High School so crews can enter the hills in Pleasanton from a better vantage point.

Police say right now they do not suspect any foul play and do not believe Kreycik wanted to disappear. He was a tech worker and a member of a local runners club.

The area of Pleasanton Ridge and the surrounding ridgelands was once proposed as a National Park by Congressman Pete Stark (deceased). The Federal govt ended up not creating a park there, but the East Bay Regional Park District did instead and it is right next to Augustin Bernal Park managed by the city of Pleasnton. It is easy to get lost there because there are many trails and side trails. The area is huge and I've gotten lost there and confused about where I was even with a map with me.

It's recommended to have search dogs on the trail during the morning with cool air falling down slope. Warm air on rising currents makes it harder for a scent dog that's working a specific trail for movement. Hoping this one has a happy ending.

Authorities continue searching for missing Pleasanton man who never returned from run – East Bay Times

A group of about 100 volunteers and law enforcement personnel spanned out again at Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park on Monday to look for a man who went for a weekend run and didn’t return.

“It’s not as hot as it was over the weekend, and we’re happy about that,” Silacci had said earlier. “We are in a race against time. It’s still a search and rescue at this point. If the day goes by, and we haven’t found him, we’ll re-assess at that time. But we’re still optimistic about locating him.”
