They say that the vehicle had an Ontario licence plate so hopefully it is unrelated to those missing in Calgary.

Today's press conference seemed less optimistic than yesterday's somehow. Yesterday he stated that they hoped to bring the victims home to their family alive, today he simply said they hope to bring them home. It's a small thing, but his aspect seemed a bit different today.

Each day there is a little more information. First it was missing, then it was abduction, now it is violence. Motive, and whether this was random, are unknown, so I would guess that everyone is a little more cautious about locking up and being wary of strangers.

Have they ever commented on whether the couple's personal belongings such as purse, wallets, cell phones, were left behind in the home?

I recall a reporter asking that question during the conference call from a couple of days ago (the one where the family spoke). LE's response was that they wouldn't comment on that as they didn't want to hurt the investigation.

It's not. Det. Smyth is in Ontario and has nothing to do with Alberta cases. If the burned out vehicle is related to this missing family, they will work together. I doubt that anyone would drive three days to set a vehicle on fire.

I disagree otto ... sure it's an Ontario crime scene but for Jim Smyth to be brought in so suddenly is, IMO, an indication there is a real concern wrt the psychology of who may have committed that crime. Three peeps missing from AB and a vehicle involved, and 3 bodies found in a burned out vehicle in Ontario. Why do you think they aren't connected?

Mostly because it is 2700 km away - as the crow flies.
3474 Km - Driving Distance from Calgary Alberta to Barrie Ontario

I am very upset that Smyth is in charge of the investigation. For those who don't know, Det.-Ins.Jim Smyth is the behavioural science specialist that cracked Russel Williams in his interrogation and coerced a confession from him on the murders of Jessica Lloyd, Marie-France Comeau and 88 other sexual offenses, and is also the Detective who located the remains of school girl Victoria Stafford.

Last time we heard about him in a case, he was part of a task force for Sonia Varaschin's unsolved murder. I am extremely dismayed right now. :(

Does anyone know if Smyth was working this case? He is an expert in many things, and given the usage of the ViCLAS, the software that links up violent crimes in different geographical areas across Canada, he doesn't just go to "any" case. :(

Which case is he in charge of? This one or the bodies in the burned car?

Lots of peeps flee Ontario and are found in BC and vice versa ... same distance either way ;)

At this point it would seem the Ontario case. However, BSUs are highly specialized and brainstorm with their counterparts across the country and even internationally at times. In the Edmonton missing/murdered women cases, they held thinktanks with BSUs, FBI profilers, international criminology professors .. they don't necessarily limit their expertise / intelligence to just their own jurisdictions.

Regardless of what it is ... it is unusual to have JS on the scene within mere hours of the Barrie incident.

That's my question as well. I am sure if they were headed across Canada towards Ontario the perp(s) could have easily come across an empty farmer's field or abandoned building somewhere along the way to dispose of the bodies if need be. Why risk driving all the way to Ontario with the victims (alive or not) when something could easily be done closer to Alberta? Also, the burned out car in Barrie was left right out in the open close to a major highway where it would be seen shortly after it had been set on fire.

Just thoughts and obviously total spec at this point, but depending what's involved in the AB case (which we don't know), some could have been paid to stela a vehicle and put distance between the AB crime scene and a disposal site. Regardless of who those 3 victims are, it's a tragedy .. but also pretty coincidental that 3 peeps are missing in Canada and 3 peeps have been found in Ontario (and not reported missing in Ontario that we know of).

I hope beyond hope that it isn't Nathan and his grandparents, but whoever it is, another very sad and horrible situation.

Who knows, I hope it's not them, I hope they are still alive somewhere. but say the perp was surprised and panicked for whatever reason, maybe he/they took them alive, maybe he/they didn't know what to do so kept driving, maybe he/they planned on letting them go, maybe someone was losing blood and passed away, maybe the perp/perps decided to put as much distance between the crime scene and the bodies as they could. It's possible but how likely IDK

I think it would be a lot easier to drive to the mountains (45 minutes West of Calgary) and leave bodies in the wilderness where animals and weather will hide the evidence.

I'm curious about the green truck. I can't find a link to the press conference anywhere, but I understand that it was seen on the street several times. Was that several times in the middle of the night, or several times during the weekend? If the truck was used to remove evidence and people from the house, and it was seen several times in the night, then I would expect that any bodies would not be that far from the house.

If it were Nathan and his grandparents in the burnt out car, wouldn't news reports have said that one person was a child?

The news says the burned out Barrie vehicle was a passenger vehicle. It also had Ontario licence plates.

“It was burnt beyond recognition. I was there,” Leon said of the vehicle. “I had to ask somebody what the vehicle was. It's definitely not a minivan or a pickup truck, but it's a passenger vehicle of some type.”
