PICTOU — Christopher Alexander Falconer may not stand trial in the death of Amber Kirwan until next winter.

Dressed in orange prison garb, Falconer smiled as he entered the packed courtroom. He sat calmly and quietly, staring directly at the three witnesses who testified Monday.

Before the inquiry began Monday, the Crown asked the court to ban from publication or broadcast the identification of witnesses testifying at the preliminary hearing. The Crown's request for the application came two days after the The News had published the names of people who had testified in the opening days of the inquiry.

The first-degree murder trial of the man charged in Amber Kirwan’s death will go ahead in January as planned.

Crown and defence lawyers met with the judge hearing the case Tuesday in Pictou to discuss the trial of Christopher Alexander Falconer, the only person charged in the Kirwan case.

The trial begins Jan. 6, 2014, in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Pictou.

It is expected to take until Jan 31 to complete.

About 50 Crown witnesses will be called to testify.

A conviction in the slaying of Amber Kirwan cannot erase the pain still felt by her loved ones, the Crown said Tuesday as the young woman's killer was found guilty of first-degree murder.

A jury convicted Christopher Alexander Falconer on the second day of deliberations at Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Pictou following three weeks of testimony.
