Southeast District Major Crime Unit assisting in case of missing Merritt cowboy - KamloopsMatters.com

The Southeast District Major Crime Unit has been called in to help with the search of missing Merritt man Ben Tyner.

In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 6), police say local residents may see a heavier police presence around town and surrounding areas.

Would the Major Crime Unit be called in if this was simply a missing person's case? Major Crime to me implies they suspect foul play, but I am also not familiar with how things like this work in Canada. MOO

I just did a quick search, looks to me like they focus on homicides.

Why police think you didn't need to know about missing person, homicide for seven months

Read this ^^^^^, we might not hear much about Ben, for a long time.

Like you, I’m not familiar with the Canadian way. Sweet Anna has to answer a deluge of questions from me.

Yeah, it's strange, IMO. I'd like to see a map of the ranch, with the location his horse was found and the location the broken rein was found, but I guess we have to be content with knowing SAR hopefully looked in the most likely places for him, based on what info they could gather. I'm just sorry they didn't find him.

Eta: re: his phone-- not sure how reliable the signal would be in that area, if there's one at all.
Did they DNA check on rein to see if it's his?

Well, I’ve been snooping around reading, wish I hadn’t.
I really think Ben met up with foul play.
Family & friends are very concerned Ben would go 17mi away with/o telling anyone. They feel he would not.
They want to know who trailered him & why he’s not coming forward. Also claim Ben’s horse was very well trained (I figured as much). Did Ben only get to Nr around Thanksgiving, so he’s only been in BC for appx two months?

Edited: modified

In regards to the timing of BT arriving at NR, it had to have been after November 18th, 2018, because he was offering to give away a collection of assorted leather pieces used for creating leather work on 11/18. He was offering these pieces due to preparing for a long distance move.

Right! He may have accepted the job early Nov but not moved until weeks later. I hope the move didn’t cost him his life. He’s so young & seems to be a man of much character.

Hmm. Transitioning from a short-term search effort. Investigation is ongoing. Must be some evidence other than just not being able to find any trace of him. JMO

Lol! Needle - haystack.
What’s your theory on this case?

Hmmm....I vascillate on two theories....

Knowing horses like I do, no matter how experienced and competent a rider is, accidents happen, and they happen lightning fast.

Just like driving a car....accidents happen. Even to the best drivers (Dale Earnnhardt?).

But....I can envision a scenario where an outsider is not wanted/resented. There sure are a lot of questions that seem legit here....

I think RCMP have known from the beginning. I’m sure you read my link pertaining to their discretion in keeping crimes private. Boy, that’d go well in the US, huh? (NOT)
This case has seemed to lack urgency, imo. I think it’s pretty serious to think of someone lying in a snowdrift in subzero temps. I never did grasp the S L O W N E S S & lack of news.

He may have had no idea he was stepping into controversy.
Possibly his start date coincided with when the ranch handhouse was vacated.

It seems this has been shrouded in secrecy, never really like a missing persons case. Hopefully, if Ben had problems, he shared info with his friends or family.
I did see in a previous link, his WY friend texted Ben & that’s how he found out he was missing. So, I guess that means his family had his phone, at that point? With the small population of Merritt, someone knows something, imo.
