Probe into double fatal Dundas fire continues

The fire marshal report, expected to detail the cause of the fire, expected to take about another month

News Aug 13, 2018 by Nicole O'Reilly The Hamilton Spectator
--
The Hamilton police probe into the arson homicides of a well-liked retired Dundas couple continues to focus on questioning family as detectives wait for forensic results from the fire scene.
....
"We're working toward clearing the family ... we have not cleared everyone," Det. Sgt. Steve Bereziuk of the major crime unit said this week. "The entire family remains co-operative."
....
Bereziuk has said from the beginning this will likely be a long investigation, with the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) report still likely a month away.
....
However it began, and whatever accelerant was used, the fire was fast. ....
....
Police also continue to examine surveillance video collected from businesses and residences in the neighbourhood off York Road. The Rutherford home backs onto Grove Cemetery.

That comment about 'we haven't cleared everyone' meaning in the family doesn't sound good. Could be very misleading, may mean they just have not finished their enquiries. Time to not comment, IMO.
Hope they are being careful how they say that cause it infers that it MAY be a member of the family.

I thought the family were cleared right off after the fire.

No, imho, their between the lines statements have suggested the opposite.

Waiting, waiting, waiting...very impatiently.
What happened to this couple? Who would have wanted to do them so much harm as to kill them in this horrific way?
No doubt police are on their trail and they should be very, very worried (and ashamed).

So sad.

Adult child of Dundas arson murder victims a suspect in their killings
As demolition crews destroyed the torched home of Carla and Alan Rutherford this week, they found eerie, heartbreaking remains
OPINION Sep 14, 2018 by Susan Clairmont The Hamilton Spectator

An adult child of a Dundas couple killed when their house was torched is being treated as a suspect in their murders.

For the first time, Hamilton police homicide detectives are publicly saying that one of Carla and Alan Rutherford's four children is the focus of their investigation.

They are also saying the arson was intended to kill the retired, popular couple and that a hit man may have been asked to set the blaze.

LadyL, stay tuned. Once charges are laid, they'll identify the person.

Yes, seems they wanted not just money but 'revenge' for whatever. An earlier report seemed to indicate that the couple were awake as they were torched.

There isn't a proper punishment for this, IMO.

It seems that Clairmont got the exclusive scoop on this news.

Inner circle makes it sound like more than one single person may have had a 'personal vendetta'. I'll bet the hired arsonist is <modsnipped unnecessary wording> right now, wondering whether to come forward in the hope of making a deal, or to sit tight and hope for the best? jmo.

I wonder if the final Will had any changes of interest from a previous version.

Presumably any hired killer would have been handsomely remunerated for a job completed as ordered. That kind of money can't be all that difficult to find records of? imo.

Now that this news is public, there may be others that indirectly know of this, or who can now put two and two together, and provide police with little pieces to the puzzle, which will help move this case forward.

The article states Mrs. R had 2 boys from a previous marriage and Mr. R. had 2 daughters by a previous marriage.

I can see where concerns about changes in a will could make the 2 sets of adult children.......very unhappy.

Who is "they"? And who is "he"? Can you tell us anything that would put this comment into context?
Sorry @musicaljoke that quote is from the newspaper link posted above, but my posts got snipped as I did not know it was not allowed to quote more from a story if done within separate posts. The article says the family was allowed to go into the house to gather any personal effects that were important to them.. the family including the as-yet-unnamed person who police suspect to be involved. So the 'he' is a member of LE, and the 'they' are the family members of Alan and Carla.

This is the article cited above by Razz:
Opinion | Adult child of Dundas arson murder victims a suspect in their killings

This is a quote from the article:
At one point during the wrecking process, a metal lock box was found in the rubble. Crew members say they don't know what part of the house it had been stored in, but that inside were papers related to the Rutherfords' divorces, their marriage, life insurance and their will.

Bereziuk says police have arranged to pick the box up from a neighbour.

Seems strange that LE would not have found the lock box themselves, as the statement that they intend to pick it up from a neighbor implies a neighbor found it. Wonder what that is about?

Also, it seems to be a curious statement from LE that the POI is described as being cooperative with LE, but I suppose that makes sense, especially if the POI, who has also been outed by police as an adult child of the couple, is innocent. These are some puzzling aspects of this terrible crime.
