-- Apparently, while a lot of people want the case closed with no charges, the Mounties are not done with it yet. Good for them.

Lawyer for man in python death investigation speaks out on case

Arseneault says the department had six months to lay charges, but it missed the deadline. However, there are still provisions within New Brunswick’s Fish and Wildlife Act that could still allow charges.

-- the second article made me queasy. TWO KIDS ARE DEAD. They wouldn't be, if an illegal snake had not been housed improperly. And the owner KNEW the enclosure was faulty. How hard is it???

I think there's a lot politicking standing in the way of justice, here...

Snakes are not dangerous? Look at the number of snake bite cases in Florida. Accidents? Uh no. A man fairly close to me died last week before he could get to the hospital from a bite by a copperhead. I grew up in mountains and close to a body of water. Most of the snakes were poisonous and most of my family
was bitten at one time or another through no fault of our own. My mother stepped out the front door and was attacked by a coiled copperhead.

Leslie Matchim says Jean-Claude Savoie was arrested in the Montreal area today.

Matchim says he spoke with Savoie but doesn't know what charges his client may face.

Earlier, the RCMP said one person was arrested and is in custody in Quebec.

RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah said no charges have been laid but the investigation is ongoing.

I'm glad there's a chance this guy might see some *consequences* for his neglect of care. It'll be interesting to see what he's charged with.

just a note about the type of snake and last known fatal attack of 10 yr old lad in Durban SA

''The last attack on a human by an African rock python was in 2002, when it killed and swallowed a 10-year-old boy in Durban, South Africa. Three years earlier, a smaller rock python killed a three-year-old boy after escaping its enclosure in Centralia, Ill.

The species is the largest in Africa, sometimes growing as long as six metres."

Lawyer has confirmed identity of the accused:

""I've been authorized to confirm that it was in fact Jean-Claude Savoie who was arrested today," said Matchim, after his client called him.

"Quite honestly, I can't say [the arrest] came as a surprise. Certainly for me, the surprise came when the RCMP, quite some time ago, seemed to be recoiling from their official position with me that no charges would be forthcoming"

bbm: recoiling??? really.......interesting choice of words

Apparently, he must be charged with something within 24 hours, if he is being held under arrest.

What a terrible way to die its most people's worst nightmare I'd imagine. It's still horrifying to hear what happened in this instance. It will be interesting to see what the charges are.

"After they sort of recanted that position and announced that in fact the investigation was ongoing, then … I can't say that I’m surprised that we're at the point we're at today."

Recoiling? Shaking my head. JMO

Recoiling?
Very poor choice of words. Is French the attorney's first language? Maybe something was lost in translation… or maybe he thought he was being clever. IMO, it's a bit disrespectful to the memory of those tragic little boys.
