Exactly one year ago, Cortney Lake went missing.

She was last seen on the evening of June 7, 2017 getting into a truck her ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Philip Steven Smith, admitted he was driving – just hours after he was released from jail with the condition he stay away from Lake.

It’s a case that continues to occupy the thoughts of many in the province. Today marks a grim anniversary for the family and friends of a young woman who was murdered after disappearing without a trace one year ago.

Christmas for Cortney Lake: Family holds tree lighting for lost loved one | CBC News

Christmas is hard for the family of Cortney Lake, but they smiled through sadness and sang carols to celebrate the season on Monday night.

The loved ones of the woman believed to have been murdered pulled together support from friends and strangers during a tree-lighting in her honour.

The biggest wish is for her body to be found, so she can be brought home for a proper burial. Lake said she's never given up hope and the searches continue.

"I don't say if I find her, I say when I find her ... our searching is far from over."

With the holiday season bringing memories of their loved one, it can be especially difficult — but family members say they've found a positive in the happy faces of the carolers who come to the tree lighting.

Family of Cortney Lake applauds electronic monitoring program

'The provincial government is reintroducing electronic monitoring, which will see ankle bracelets used to enhance supervision of offenders.

The family of Cortney Lake is applauding the decision, and have spoken publicly on the need for such monitoring.

“It is our family’s belief that had the man who murdered her been ordered to wear an electronic bracelet, Cortney would still be with us.'
 
It was a tragedy that gripped the province and still haunts her loved ones; the disappearance and murder of Cortney Lake. Her story has now been told as part of the Paramount-Plus docu-series, Never Seen Again, which aired in the United States earlier this week. NTV’s David Salter has this report. Video:

Circumstances:
Cortney Lake was last seen in St. John’s on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. She is described as being 5’8” and 110-120lbs with light brown hair. Courtney Lake was last seen wearing a grey hooded parka with a pink hoody and pink and white plaid shirt and black pants and glasses. Video stills obtained from Esso on Elizabeth Ave in St. John’s show Cortney Lake hours before she went missing. This is one of the last known visuals police have of her.''
