B.C. couple vanish en route to Vegas

RCMP probes mysterious disappearance
Long-time Okanagan business owners Albert, 59, and Rita Chretien, 56, left Penticton, B.C., in their van March 19 to head to an event in Las Vegas, but they never arrived. (HANDOUT)

Mounties have launched a search for a Penticton, B.C., couple who mysteriously disappeared nearly two weeks ago while en route to a Las Vegas trade show.

Long-time Okanagan business owners Albert, 59, and Rita Chretien, 56, left town in their van March 19 to head to the event, but they never arrived. They were expected back home before Wednesday, and haven't been heard from, police said.
It has been confirmed they crossed the border into Washington State, and their credit card was used to buy gas in Baker City, Oregon on 3/19/11, so they didn't go missing in Canada.
As the current title on their thread indicates, they probably went missing in Washington or Oregon (US). At the moment it is not yet confirmed if it was them who used the credit card to purchase gas at the Oregon gas station....officers are there right now looking at video surveillance (as per their Facebook group update).

No recent news about EF and PW? Very upsetting to say the least. Thank goodness they do not have children. I am sure there are many people who love and miss them and want them back safe and sound. But then again, if they had children, we might be hearing more on this case. JMO.

Investigation continues in pair of suspicious deaths

A medical examiner performed autopsies on two bodies Thursday, one day after a man out four-wheeling on the western fringe of Edmonton stumbled across the remains.

The discovery was made in a rural, treed area west of Lewis Estates, near 215th Street. CTV News is told the passerby was riding on a clay road in a region that's being cleared for future development.

"It appears he was driving in the area on the roadway down through the fields and that's when he located the two bodies or what appears to be two bodies," said Insp. Denis Jubinville from the scene.

The discovery comes in the midst of another missing persons case involving another elderly couple. Perry Wong and his common-law wife Eloise Fendelet disappeared shortly after Christmas and few leads have emerged in their case.

One of Fendelet's relatives told CTV News police have been in contact with them, but that no identities have been confirmed yet.

At this point officials will not say how long the bodies were left in the wooded area, or what condition they were found in.

The two bodies discovered Wednesday were found by a man driving a quad west of Winterburn Road.

Police have not yet publicly identified the deceased. Johnson declined to comment on the case.

Autopsies were being performed on the bodies on Thursday.
...............
A man who worked for Fendelet and Wong at their west Edmonton dental business for 14 years said he was upset to hear about the discovery of the two bodies, and fears it may be his friends.

“I am thinking that they are the ones because there are two bodies and two are missing,” he said. “That’s very worrisome.”
...............
Florette Meger, Fendelet’s cousin, said the situation has been shocking and devastating for the entire family.

Merger said her mother received a Christmas card from the couple shortly before they disappeared.

“Eloise said they were thinking of retiring, and didn’t know what they would do with all the spare time she would have,” Meger said.

Meanwhile, autopsies for two bodies found in a west-end field are underway and EPS is treating those as suspicious deaths.

The find has friends and family of Edmonton seniors Eloise Fendelet, 71, and Perry Kit Wong, 72, last seen Dec. 27, 2010, bracing for the worst.

Det. Dale Johnson, who would not say Thursday if the remains could be Fendelet and Wong, had earlier called the couple’s disappearance “very much a mystery.”

Rising death toll in Edmonton ‘a huge problem’

As Edmonton’s homicide numbers continue to climb, the city is becoming dangerously close to claiming the title of the murder capital of Canada.

A man in his 20s found dead in his northeast Edmonton home on Thursday was deemed the city’s 17th homicide.

And should two bodies found in a field in the west end Wednesday afternoon be considered homicides, that would bring the city’s total to 19.

In comparison, Toronto has recorded 18 homicides this year and Calgary has recorded two.

“When you are getting that (homicide) rate higher than Toronto — Houston, we have a problem — and it’s a huge problem,” said Bill Pitt, Grant MacEwan University criminologist.

The tone of media releases by LE seemed to get more focused and concerned over time. I think they have leads, but they are asking for more tips now that their bodies have been found.

Rest in peace Eloise and Perry.

So terribly sad :( My deepest condolences to their families, friends and co-workers.

The land where the bodies were found is owned by Melcor Developments and is scheduled to be developed late this year.

The area is also familiar to police.

Last August, the remains of 27-year-old Jutta Bentz were found -- nearly a decade after she went missing in August 2000. Police did not suspect foul play

When Jutta went missing, police did not suspect foul play. The cause of death is still unknown.

The EPS homicide section, along with the missing persons unit, continues to investigate, said Det. Brian Robertson.

I posted this older news clip to show that although foul play was not suspected in Jutta's death ,it is still being investigated.
