It seems likely that this unidentified man was not from Canada. The clothes and evidence of travel, combined with the length of time he has gone unidentified, seem to indicate this, IMO. Did he come to Deep River as his destination, or merely a side trip? Chalk River has a nuclear reactor. Petawawa has a military base.

Couple of points:

-I contacted police and UID places in Costa Rica and gave them all info about this case but no match was ever found (or reported on).

-It's not strange to not have a wallet in Algonquin. I went canoeing there this summer and as is per norm you leave your wallet in your car as its useless in the bush.

-When I was on my trip I met with several groups of international tourists (from Germany and Holland) who were all wearing high end clothing. I would strongly believe that this man is international and likely European. Algonquin is one of Canada's most popular tourist attractions.

-The caffeine pills are what killed him. His cause of death was "Caffeine overdose" Bizzare but true.

- I love the Deep River Triathelon angle. Look into that further.

Going back in this thread, the information seems to indicate no information about drugs or anything found in his bloodstream. Could you post a link to the caffeine overdose information? A caffeine overdose could explain the outhouse. Caffeine pills are used by some marathon runners. At the doses used by some, especially those who are not accustomed to it, incontinence happens.

This man was apparently found on a trail near Deep River, and not in Algonquin Park.

On another note, the ingredients in weight loss pills and caffeine pills sound strangely like the "go-nogo" pills used by the military. Energy bars are sometimes called "soldier fuel". They're included in meal kits at Canadian Forces sporting events:

There may well have been ephedra in the weight-loss pills if he bought them in 2001. Around that time, at least in the USA, ephedra was legally available and was easy to find in the form of pep pills ("Yellow Jackets" and the like) at convenience stores.
 
Anyone know whatever became of LE looking at our "Bret Stone" as possibly being the missing UBC student, Emerson Grant Dobroskay? That was reported this past February, so if there was a match, you'd think we would have heard something by now.
 
I knew it was a very long shot, but a few months ago, I submitted to the OPP information about a fugitive from Costa Rica who was on the run. This was an affluent person with a background in narcotics. This would explain the Costa Rican airline information, the expensive hotel stays and the fact that no one has claimed him.

Although not likely, while on acne acnomel cream, it is possible to develop resorcinol poisoning. Even though the chances of this occurring are rare, it is still good to familiarize yourself with the warning signs, which include, but are not limited to, nausea, dizziness, trouble breathing, or diarrhea. For a list of the symptoms check the package literature.

He did have the strangest list of hiking supplies I've ever seen. I guess any loose ends would have been tied up if the pathologist found an empty bottle of caffeine pills, then discovered he'd died of caffeine poisoning (no link yet). Kind of odd to take along acne medication, when a lot of that stuff makes a person's skin more sensitive to the sun. And hiking is done in the sun. Wouldn't sunblock have made more sense?
 
Is there any chance that B Stone has in fact been identified and that info was not updated or made public?
Since foul play was not suspected,I guess there would be no reason to take fingerprints of the items found with the body,but what if someone had actually exchanged bags/identity with him?

For what it is worth, I have purchased clothing items found on body, such as Pepe brand shirt(expensive)jockey shorts,buttonfly jeans at the Bay store downtown Toronto.At the time, trendy very young man or teenager type items,in my opinion.

Hm, thank you for that information! I had only vaguely heard of this festival, but it certainly sounds like the kind of thing our man might have attended. It fits with the time frame, too -- if he was doing a little light hiking before heading to the city for the festival.

Was pondering the wallet aspect, when your reference to "car" jumped out at me. If this guy isn't from Deep River (lol ... we all know from Lachlan's thread and the media how DR residents don't seem to get too involved in such matters) ... how did our Bret Stone get to Deep River in the first place?? If he was not a DR resident and he arrived unaccompanied, he had to have driven, taken a Greyhound, flown in, or hiked from some place not too distant.

Re the Costa Rica luggage tag .. IMO, the fact that LE was able to determine that the tag was from a CR domestic airline, one would think that it should also have contained either a reference to which airline (unless ALL domestic airlines in Costa Rica use a generic logo?) Generally, luggage tags are one of two designs ... one which has only the form for name, address, etc on one side and blank on the other side, OR one that has the name/addy form on one side, and a company advertising logo on the other.

Could it be that those who know "Bret Stone" don't want anyone to know who they are? In other words, they may have reason not to talk to LE, whatever the reason may be.
 
Just thought i'd point out ... when trying to match Bret to other missing persons, we need to consider that the caffeine pills and rapid weight loss pills could possibly indicate that he was heavier at some point in his life.
 
Good point Sillybilly,I wonder if a post mortem 'sitting position" could affect height estimate.
 
Not to get too off topic, but if caffeine and diet pills can kill you, perhaps it can also cause you to kill....
