Now that Lyle Stevik has been identified, if there ever was a connection between this man and Lyle, I wonder if there could be any way their two identities might somehow be found to be conclusively linked?

Admittedly, Lyle's family have stated they knew nothing of his whereabouts for the last 16 plus years, but it may be that they were aware of this man's identity in relation to Lyle from his past and prior to his disappearance.

It feels like it could be a desperately long bow to draw, but the known circumstantial connections which can be projected upon as links between these two cases is far too strong a lead to just ignore, in my opinion.

I wonder if they could do a similar genealogical DNA analysis, similar to what they did for Lyle. Since this guy had signs of travel, you would think that it would be particularly helpful in locating connections, which otherwise would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Actually, isotope testing would likely be helpful in this case. I know this was raised in this thread a number of years ago, but certainly something could be done??

Of course LE would have to find the funds to do the isotope testing, and I'm not sure they are motivated enough to pursue it.

One guy from California hanged himself in a hotel room in his home state.

A different guy who had been traveling through Canada died in a park in Canada, probably of natural causes or an accidental overdose of caffeine pills.

More detailed info about the circumstances of Paul Winston Byrne's disappearance, at link below.

He is taller than Bret Stone, and from New Zealand (south east of Australia).

Could he have somehow survived the torture that he was subjected to in Tasmania (south of Australia), and ended up in Ontario, Canada?

His eyeglasses in the picture are different shape than Bret Stone's, but there's something about his features: nose, right eyebrow, lips that are similar to Bret's. JMHO

Can you explain this? How you feel Lyle's case (I'm so happy this got resolved) and this one might related to each other? Just extremely curious.

It's an extreme long shot. You'd have to believe that van Leent managed to go off the grid for twelve years while managing to prosper and travel around the world.

The murder rate in the Netherlands was extremely low back in the late '80s, so it's possible that van Leent assumed a new identity, but I lean towards an accidental death or suicide.

As for Bret Stone, he's probably someone who was never reported missing.

Thanks, great to see a fresh article and pic!

So just a thought, and not sure if this has been covered on this forum before, but he seems to have had some camping gear with him. I know there's a ton of camping stores in Petewawa, which is not that far from Deep River, do they know if he got those items anywhere there?

I grew up in Deep River and have always been flabbergasted by this case. I would be happy to answer any lingering questions you folks may have about the area.

I didn't grow up there, but have hiked and skied the trails often during my years posted at CFB Petawawa and have a couple friends who live there still. Given this gent was well-travelled and the expense of the items he was found with, IMO he is somehow associated with the scientific or medical community. It's a beautiful town for scientists, and for those who enjoy the outdoors.

For other posters, Deep River was once known as the bedroom community of young, single scientists with nary a mother-in-law to be found. Streets named after notorious scientists etc (Darwin, Rutherford, Newton etc).

Far from a sleepy town, there are so many possibilities for "why" this gentleman could have been there. I'd would safely rule out any association with the CFB Petawawa Iron Man (it is not comparable to any other ironman competition) which was cancelled in 2001 due to the events of 9/11 and our business in the aftermath; it is limited to Canadian serving military or ex-military members and serving civilian employees of DND. It's now called Iron Warrior ( Soldiers test their mettle in Iron Warrior at Garrison Petawawa ). I'd also rule out a Defence or Security Contractor working at the base as, in 2001, contractors there were few for those items and most was handled in-house by our mil staff. And, any D&S contractor would have been escorted into any secure area he needed to access to work on such an item - a cleared individual would have been missed in his absence.

I'm hoping that the RCMP have linked in with the upscale hotels in our National Capital, Ottawa to determine if they had any guest who checked in, but not out. Given the other hotels linked to this UID, I don't think he would have stayed locally.

Scientific Conferences attracting a world-wide audience etc were/are the norm at AECL. AECL is headquartered in Ottawa, but the AECL Chalk River nuclear facility also happens to be the world's largest supplier of medical radioactive isotopes; international visitors/buyers from the scientific and medical communities are not uncommon. I'm wondering if this gent had a presentation to deliver or attend and then whiled away the remainder of his day relaxing on the trails. If a conference was happening, it's not unheard-of for guest speakers to be picked up from the airport (also in Ottawa) or hotel and driven to the location. This may explain the lack of any associated vehicle and personal possessions with him/found.

Then again, the trans-Canada highway to head to western Canada does go right through town … as does the bus-line. I think if he were on a bus, that the ticket would also have been found amongst his other items. I think we can rule out hitch-hiking as this was obviously a man with some accessible finances given the expensive glasses, clothing and hotels he's associated with.

IMO, he looks South American and given that he carried items associated with a Costa Rican airline, I'm convinced that's where the answer lies. Most North Americans would travel to/from Costa Rica on a North American carrier. Are there any scientists or doctors missing from there in Sept 2001? AECL has built CANDU reactors world-wide, one in Argentina. Could he be associated with that project?

Scientific or Medical Conferences in Vancouver or Toronto (dates can be determined as to when he was in those locations as IIRC, he only had matchbooks from there), or in the US around the time that laundry tag was issued? Was there a manufacture date on the G.N.C. products as I believe they'd have been purchased while he was in the USofA. Seems to me G.N.C supplements didn't become available until the late-2000s in Canada (troops) when they expanded their operations to outside of the US.

Triathelete? Deep River has a good one.

Deep River also used to hold a large end-of-summer camp for top University students who were budding scientists from around the globe. I am unsure if they still host this.

As an aside, Mulholland Drive only mentions Deep River, but wasn't filmed there. There was a Zombie film made there at some point in the late 2000s - all too late to have relevance to this unidentified.

They also used to have a full-up symphony orchestra and I'm unsure if this still exists.

So many possibilities.

Who are you?

-But a Costa Rican *domestic* airline, which, according to the Doe Network, was TravelAir:
Nature Air - Wikipedia

Though TravelAir/NatureAir apparently didn't fly in-country absolutely exclusively, looks like its international flights were just to & from Panama & Nicaragua, the 2 countries sharing borders with Costa Rica. So if this man used this airline, it would’ve likely been to get around inside CR. That may weakly suggest he was from Costa Rica, but tourists from other countries regularly used it to get from place to place inside the country once they had arrived there.

He had hiking gear but not camping gear, which makes me think two possibilities: either he was a day hiker with someplace else to go back to at the end of the day, or he had made camp somewhere not too far away and was taking a hike from the base camp.

Is the trail close enough to cities and towns that he could have been hiking from one inn/motel/etc to the next for a longer hike? I've driven through Petawawa/Deep River area several times but never done more than stop for lunch. We were heading farther north for canoe outings with friends. Is there canoeing on that part of the river? Is the trail close enough to the water that he could have come in that way?

Just random thoughts...

I have been trying to find this John Doe for a long time. Part of the problem was my time parameters were way off. I am shocked now to see this UID case happened in 2001. I was looking in the early to mid teens of this century. Plus the actual picture of the deceased had been removed from the Canada missing case number and I did not recognize him from the artist's rendition.

It always shocks me that an actual photograph of an individual that exhibits no signs of decomp or catastrophic injuries doesn't result in an identification.

To me, it's obvious this man lived a comfortable life. He doesn't exhibit any attributes assigned to someone who may have been homeless, on the run, or engaged in a high risk lifestyle.

I've been examining his belongings and there are some oddities included in his knapsack such as a laundry bag from a high end hotel in Toronto and airline tags. Most things are expected for someone who may be used to traveling for short term business but engages in short term hikes no longer than 3 or 4 hours.

The lack of identification is a little odd but unfortunately, I can provide a real life situation that happened to some friends of mine who died in a motor vehicle accident in their teens. Three died and one survived and between the time he left his friends to find help some random individual stopped and stole their wallets and snorkeling equipment so that when the police arrived they had no way to identify them.

BS appears European to me, possibly of German extraction. There are lots of ethnic Germans in Brazil. Brazil would tie into an individual traveling through Central America on their way to the US or Canada. I just came back from Panama and a lot of the people on my Toronto flight were coming from Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil.

I'm trying to figure out why this guy would be in Blind River. It doesn't appear that a military or nuclear connection has been made so I wonder if it was mining. I keep coming back to that little pinkie ring he wore. People call that stone an aquamarine but it's unusual colouring of blue and green makes me think it's a rare type of tourmaline. Here's a picture of some stones similar to BS next to his ring.tourmaline stone paraiba.jpg tourmaline stone john doe blind river 2001.jpg
What makes the colour unique is copper. There were copper mines in Ontario, some near the area of Blind River. In 2006 a Brazilian company bought out Inco for billions of dollars.

Is it possible that this individual was on a business trip related to the mining industry and decided to
check out some of the area that had had copper veins back in the day. If he was only in the country for a few days it's possible that his family may have thought he'd gotten caught up in the tragedy of 9/11. Or maybe he was the perfect person for a job that entailed traveling the world because he had no family.
