"Realtor and former Maple Ridge city councillor Franz Prokop is in hospital recovering from an apparent attempt on his life at a large rural property that is up for sale."

"Anyone with information is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251, or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The case recalls the Vancouver Island tragedy in which young realtor Lindsay Buziak was murdered while showing a home.

Buziak’s family is still searching for answers more than five years after the 24-year-old was stabbed to death in the Victoria suburb of Saanich".

I don't have a link handy but the local paper reported Israel Keyes only visited Victoria once, in 2006 I think and that he wasn't linked to any unsolved crimes in the area. I guess anything is possible but I think it's highly unlikely he is connected to Lindsay's murder.

kmclaren, Israel Keyes was meticulous and wasn't linked to any of his many victim's murders for almost two decades. Lindsey Buziak's murder was very well planned and extremely personal. The missing knife with the 4&1/2" blade that IK asked about may be the key to LB's murder, as well as an identification and indictment of her unknown murderer..

These are the only dates that I could locate, that the FBI is aware of...
April 22, 2006: Boat rental (Island Boat Rentals) - Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

April 23, 2006: Hotel reservation (Travelers Inn) - Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Did U.S. serial killer continue his hunt for victims on trips to B.C.?

When questioned, Keyes admitted to killing 11 people in up to nine states but added, “Canadians don’t count,” Gonzalez said.

It’s unclear whether Keyes purposely didn’t include Canadians in his murder tally or if he didn’t kill any.

“It’s very cryptic. The investigators never really got to follow up on that,” Gonzalez said.

I don't think it could have been IK.

I believe that Lindsay was murdured on Feb 2/08. According to the detailed timeline that the FBI released last month, IK flew from Anchorage to Mobile AL (via Dallas) on Jan 28/08. He flew from Mobile AL to Seattle on Feb 6 (again via Dallas). He rented a car while in the Alabama area and had a transaction in Slidell Louisiana on Feb 2, the day Lindsay was murdered.

Having difficulty understanding why there was so much documentation by IK, before, during, and after Lindsay's murder. Just seems to be an intentional attempt to establish an alibi.

Snoopster, guess I am just a little skeptical due to IK's smoke & mirrors deflective cageyness..

I absolutely hear what you are saying! I don't trust anything IK said or the fact that he went through a lot of trouble to hide his movements.

Having said that, I have trouble believing that IK was able to set the house viewing up with LB and was also jumping through various travel hoops at the same time, as well as changing his known MO (having a partner in crime).

Of course that's not to say that any of that is not possible...I just find it a long stretch, as we try to suspect IK of pretty much many different crimes and disappearances. I really don't think there is a shortage of 'bad guys', unfortunately!

JMO obviously, and absolutely willing to be found wrong!

I am new here but have been following the Israel Keyes case also. I realize that IK has his timeline and the paper trail shows him somewhere else other than Victoria, BC at the time the Buziak murder happened but I still believe that they should at least check it out just in case. Can they not check the DNA involved to make sure? For all we know, his girlfriend could have been an accomplice. I thought it was creepy that she continued to live at the house after they arrested him and were searching both the house and the shed.

Welcome to Ws. ElizabethC !
It would be great to find out if and how many murders IK may have committed in Canada.
The female poi is described as wearing a somewhat unusual dress, maybe that might be key to solving this crime ..

They also have a sketch of the woman. It was in the Times Colonist 2/1/2010. In one of his interviews, IK was talking about a knife that he had used in one of his crimes that LE had not found. His MO was strangling and then either burning the victims or using drano to help with the decomposition. So this stabbing in Victoria may not be him. He said he only shot one of his victims, in Vermont and that the rest were strangled. This was from one of the interviews that he did. But who knows if he is telling the truth? He had also built a silencer that he was proud of and was going to use it on some people but police showed up and he had to abort his mission. I caught him changing his answers in a couple of the interviews so who knows what is the truth. He sure traveled a lot. Thank God they caught him when they did.

Also posting on the IK discussion thread, I would love to know which Canadian crimes he may be responsible for.

Bumping this up as we approach the 6th anniversary of Lindsay's unsolved murder.

There's another memorial walk on February 2nd this year. If only we had a trial to attend rather than another walk.

"We were very fortunate to have NBC Dateline decide to do a show on Lindsay's murder, a one-hour show. It was spectacular. It's like winning the lottery for families who are grieving over lost ones where there are no answers. I think that's when we got our answers because they got unprecedented access to the file, which no one else gets, and what they said is, what it is, someone close to her someone who knows her very well, it's personal."

Two events are being planned to celebrate the anniversary of Lindsay Buziak's murder.

This 2010 video features some of Lindsay's friends who chose not to appear on the original Dateline episode.
Wonder if they participated in the new one?

What are the nationality of the surnames Buziak and Prokop?

What is the real Estate industry like in Canada or in that area?

There have been a number of these cases in various countries where female real estate agents were murdered while showing a home. In most of the cases, evidence was that the perpetrator was a single male so this killing, with a couple, is atypical.

Here close to me, real estate agent Sherry Lewis was murdered while showing a home in Decatur, IL. Her 1994 slaying is also unsolved.

Hi Fig Tree! I was reading this thread and saw your comment. I am a real estate salesperson in Manitoba, Canada. I have reviewed the licensing requirements for a Real Estate Salesperson license in British Columbia and they are pretty much the same. We have to take a course or a number of courses and pass a test prior to getting our salesperson's license. One is also required to have a criminal check done with the RCMP - once this is done you will be granted a licence. There are ongoing education courses to take and in Manitoba we are required to take a day-long course once a year to learn about any changes in real estate legislation.

To become a broker (which is to own a real estate company and hire salespeople to work under you), you must take even more courses to ensure you are operating your business within the law and the requirements of (in Manitoba) the Manitoba Securities Commission. Real Estate in Manitoba is highly regulated by the Province and the Federal Government and I imagine it is the same in British Columbia as the market there is pretty high stakes.

That said, I don't know all the background on this case regarding Lindsay. In Manitoba (as I imagine it to be in BC), Lindsay would not be able to show a property unless she had a salesperson's license. To enter the property, she would either have the key, or a way to get to the key. In Manitoba, especially in Winnipeg where there are lots of brokers and houses for sale, it is easier to have the key available at the house so salespeople don't have to bother the listing broker for the key. To do this, we have "lockboxes" that are secured to a railing or door handle and salespeople have a device where you enter a code, place the device against the lockbox, and a small drawer is open revealing the key. Once you are done showing the home, the key is returned to the drawer and the drawer is "locked" shut. Thus, one needs a real estate salesperson/broker to enter the property and the property stays secure.

Below is an article published in the Winnipeg Real Estate News about a salesperson who escaped an attacker. It mentions Lindsay Buziak's murder as well as an incident that occurred in 1979 that was re-opened in 2007 by Winnipeg police. I am not sure what ultimately happened as I believe this article was written in 2008/2009.

A brave agent

One cold case involving the murder of a real estate agent was re-opened by Winnipeg Police Services in 2007. On Friday, November 16, 1979, the body of 31-year-old Irene Emily Pearson was found in the basement of a vacant home for sale in Tyndall Park. Pearson had been a salesperson for Castlewood Homes, which owned the property. The night before she had been working alone in the company’s show home across the street. Her body was found by company maintenance workers at 8:30 a.m. the next morning. Pearson had been hit over the head several times with a blunt instrument and then stabbed repeatedly in the chest.

Police found a note taped to the door of the show home she had been working in, saying, “Back in 10 minutes.” The TV was still on, Pearson’s purse was underneath a side table, her cigarettes were on a coffee table and a pocketbook was splayed out on the couch. Police believe she was unconcerned about leaving the house unlocked because of what was found in such casual disarray. They also believe she probably knew her assailant or the attacker had been a prospective client who had arrived at the show house and was escorted by her to the other show house across the street where she was murdered.

Here is some interesting information regarding this case from an unsolved murders forum.

I feel for Lindsay's father and family - his daughter should have been safe doing the job she had. I live in a rural area and show rural homes and cottages - I try to follow safe practices, but you never know when someone will hit you from behind, etc. It's good to go in pairs, but the real estate industry is highly competitive and most of us work alone so we don't have to split a commission with a co-worker. Some think real estate is glamourous work - but it is tough work - hours are long and irregular and you are not guaranteed a sale until the deal closes.

Prayers to Lindsay's family.
