Son of Australian chief inspector and his girlfriend are 'shot dead' in Canada and dumped on the side of a major highway - as police launch murder investigation

Snipped...
...Mr Fowler, from Sydney's Hills District, has been identified as the son of NSW Chief Inspector Stephen Fowler.

Northern Rockies officers were called to the highway, about 20 kilometres south of Liard Hot Springs, at 7.19am on Monday.

I think they were not on the Highway of Tears. They were much farther North.

...“We have lost our dear Lucas Fowler, son, brother, grandson and friend in the most terrible of circumstances. To lose someone so young and vibrant, who was travelling the world and just enjoying life to the full, is devastating.

To know his beautiful girlfriend, Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina, also lost her life in this violent event is too cruel. All our love and best wishes go to Chynna’s family and friends.

We are all now travelling to Canada to be with our boy and to bring him home.
Our deepest thanks for all your love and care. At this stage, we can only move forward a minute at a time, and those minutes are moving so slowly.

Please share this with all those who may have crossed paths anywhere in the world with these beautiful young people.”

Has anyone found any information about where they were prior to being in BC?

"From 1989 to 2006 nine young women went missing or were found murdered along the 724 kilometre length of highway 16 – now commonly referred to as the Highway of Tears."

Highway of Tears - Wikipedia

Not sure why the reference to Highway of Tears, as someone already pointed out - BC is a big place! These 2 highways cross at one point but about 13 hours south of Liard Hot Springs where this happened...

The Highway of Tears is Highway 16 which runs east-west: Highway of Tears - Wikipedia

Alaska Highway (which is what the original article mentioned) is north-south and starts well north of the Highway of Tears: Alaska Highway - Wikipedia

BC is huge, it's more than twice as big as California.

I agree. It looks like someone is using a bit of sensationalism trying to tie these murders to the highway of tears.

Australian man, U.S. woman found dead on highway in northeastern B.C.
"RCMP Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said it’s not known if a blue 1986 Chevrolet van with Alberta licence plates belonged to either Lucas Fowler, 23, or his girlfriend Chynna Deese, 24, a resident of Charlotte, N.C.

Fowler, who is from the Sydney area of Australia, was living in B.C., and Deese was visiting him, Shoihet said"

"This is tragic,” Shoihet said, adding police do not know whether the pair was targeted or died in connection with “a crime of opportunity.”

Shoihet would not say whether the couple’s bodies were found inside or outside of the van."

Let's call them "The Daily Mail", shall we?

Indeed. The Daily Mail has falsely claimed that the couple were on the Highway of Tears and that there is a serial killer on the loose in the area. They were not on the Highway of Tears, and it has been several years since there was a murder on that highway. There was a strong suspect for the Highway of Tears murders - a transient worker from the USA - but he has died.

Were they found in the van? The van isn’t missing, right? The articles on this case are seriously lacking in information.

No word on where they were actually found, they didn't even say that van was what they were travelling in. The only extra information came from that woman who stopped to see if they were ok - van was broken down, they were relaxing in chairs in the ditch and were just going to wait for the van to start again...

What happened to tourist couple found dead on Alaska Highway?

RCMP investigating after young travellers murdered near Liard Hot Springs
"If you were a witness and you did see this particular van or you were witness to either Chynna or Lucas travelling in the area, contact us," Shoihet said.

"We recognize the fact people may be travelling there and have now arrived at their destination points. There's access to Alberta, Yukon, into Alaska … and there may be people who weren't aware (of the murders) until now and seeing that we're looking for these details."

Investigators are still on site, Shoihet said. Additional policing resources will be brought in as necessary, she said."

"Tourism operators along the stretch of remote highway say they are shocked by the news, but couldn't say whether they saw Fowler or Deese, or stayed at their lodges."

"It's really unusual for the area," said one lodge manager of the killings."

I was curious about the Alberta plate on the van, I thought maybe Lucas Fowler had been living in Alberta. But this article it states he'd been living in BC.

They must know who owns the van, by tracing the plate. Something cagey there.

Lots of people who live in BC go to Alberta to get car insurance because it is much cheaper than ICBC.

I read that it took Canadian authorities 3 days to identify their bodies (meaning no wallets lying around), so robbery is a likely motive...
I wonder. It's really not a region that sees violent robberies, car jackings, home invasions, etc, except when someone has driven way up there trying to outrun the law. This seems awfully cold-blooded, psychopathic.
