Pretty obvious that these two are doing exactly as they foresaw themselves doing. Holding up an unarmed fellow traveler and then offing them, cold bloodedly, knowing they had no hope of defence, and to me, it is significant that the van of Lucas and Chynna was not the reason for the murders. They wanted the bodies, not the van.

It was obvious that the van was in a state of disrepair, they stopped at that van because it was an easy target, they didn't have to flag down, or wait and pretend to be in mechanical trouble themselves. It is highly likely they began their introduction with an offer of help, knowing all along that these were their perfect targets. And , as events proved, they were. In spades.

Their third victim ( as far as is known) may indeed have put up resistance, and argument, but I am betting that his van was halted also, again, an easy target. …

Things may have got more difficult as the spree has progressed, but it doesn't negate the calculated murderous plan from the beginning.

I feel for the father of BS, but it did sound odd yesterday when he said "I'm probably the most hated father in Canada now." I also read online that he'd said his son bought a nice black suit with his second pay cheque from WalMart and now realizes his son bought it as his funeral suit. Anyone else see this? I can't remember where I read it.

If they’ve made it into Ontario (where I live) they still have a long haul to get to Toronto if that’s where they are headed.

It’s a 2 day drive minimum from Toronto to Manitoba.

What is the likelihood the suspects are no longer in Gillam? Also questioning why the OPP has issued an alert for Ontario.

They note that they're headed in an "easterly" direction. If they keep moving from Gillam, they could be in Northern Ontario.

I'm just curious as to how they're moving; this part of Northern Ontario is remote and - I'm assuming - really unfamiliar to them.

Age: Bryer is 18, too young to drink legally in B.C., where the murders were committed. Bryer is still a minor under the law. Kam is 19, fully legal in B.C.

For crimes committed in other provinces where the legal age is 18, they are both adults.

For our American friends, they would not yet be legal in your country, where 21 is the age of majority.

In other countries, drinking age is different from legal age. Not so in Canada.

In Canadian court, minors can be tried as adults, depending on how close they are to the age of majority and other factors.

Clear as mud now, right? Takeaway: Bryer is a minor and Kam is an adult in B.C.

ETA: some northern communities have voted themselves "dry". Liquor is not sold legally in these communities.

I only saw one photo of Schmegelsky and McLeod's truck. Do you have a link to the one with the plate? How odd that they'd have Alberta plates.
Hiya Aussie! It's early evening here. We're still up.

playing in the woods with airsoft. They're not military
I posted a link with the pictures. It's from a news article. The photos had been sent online to someone he gamed with. They cannot be found online. It was a private message but was shared with police and media.

So the only actual citation is "some guy says he received a picture from one of the suspects"? Am I reading that correctly? Anyone else?

Maybe contact Port Alberni mental health and request that they help the families of the suspects. The father who is speaking out seems so lost and helpless. If they can make him stronger, then he can be stronger for his son.
I’m surprised that Victim Services are not assisting. Maybe they already are.

If a cell phone has a signal it can be tracked, my guess is they ditched their phones or have shut them off. They are young they must know LE can track them via their cell pings.
I'm really curious to know if they did use or try to use any credit or debit cards of their victims. Seems a huge oversight in this day and age. Young people especially and those interested in committing crimes must know that can be a way to trace people.

To know enough to turn off their phones but not know better than to use your victims bank card.

This is all speculation of course.

Well, if they did happen to make it out of Gillam after burning the car on Monday, Northern Ontario is a day drive if they continued on an eastwards trek. It's Wednesday - better to issue a warning to those in Ontario than not to.

'Hempstead said she had only limited interactions with Schmegelsky during that year, but what he would say to her was troubling.

“I don’t want to be rude, but he was kind of a weird kid,” she said. “He didn’t really talk to anyone, super into himself. But when he did talk to people, the things he said were kind of scary…. All he ever said to me was how he wanted to kill me and ways he would do it.'

And she is a lucky girl, isn't she? Her luck was, she was in a place with other people, and his chances of getting away with it would be slim to none , and one day, he would rectify that situation, him and Kam.

Have both dads spoke? The one I saw had a strange way of speaking that seemed a tad bit condescending. "Okay? Okay?"

But what pressure to be under. He shouldn't be hated but I've read posts online of people arguing (yahoo, for example), that he must have done a bad job to raise a monster like this.

But that's not true.

There are plenty of kids who come from terrible homes and turn out fine and many who come from great homes and choose the wrong path.

No parent is perfect and most struggle at some point. Unless we find he actively enabled his kid's darkness in some concrete way, he should not be blamed, let alone hated.

The man travelled every two weeks and stayed in a hotel just to spend time with his kid for a bit. That's a caring dad IMO.

Yes what BS's dad said is very ominous of what may be to come if it hasn't already. BS could want to go out in a blaze of glory with the police but does KM? It's starting to sound like maybe KM was just along for the ride, did BS threaten him to go along with his evil suicide mission and killing others along the way? Seen online a man was driving up towards Gillam and there was a hitchhiker, the guy swerved to not hit the hitchhiker. Thank goodness the driver didn't stop to pick the guy up. Was that KM hitchhiking if so where was BS? Hmmm
I wondered the same thing. If it was them, a driver is much more likely to pick up one lone male than two. Two is more intimidating. Have seen this behaviour before.

One probably hid out of site. One would "acquire" the vehicle.

They’re in for a real treat in northern Manitoba and Ontario. :)

Could be a bad scene if they take that northern route into Ontario. Mind you, I think Dryden OPP will be ready for them. Hopefully by now LE will have an idea of what vehicle they may be travelling in if they managed to scoop one in the Gillam area.

Former Ontarian. It's been a few year but I've driven that northern route many times. No gas for miles (can't recall how many kms the warning sign says). Hopefully they have an overhead flashing sign containing a warning to all motorists not to stop for anyone but to call LE if they see someone needing assistance.

I don't "do" religion, but my prayers go out for the cops who may have to go up against these guys. I have close family in RCMP and friends in OPP. While everyone else gets to run the other way, these brave men and women run toward the danger and some don't come home.
