10:07 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Items Including Williams's digital cameras, the ropes, and the lingerie. As well as the Nissan Pathfinder he abducted Lloyd in and used to dump her body "It's going to be crushed," Burgess says about the vehicle. This is OK'd by the judge.

10:10 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Crown Lee Burgess continues to speak. "We are a community that's been shocked and saddened by all that's transpired," he says. But he points out that this is not what will define the region. He stresses that people in the community came out in support of the Armed Forces, and stated Williams didn't represent them. "You could hardly open your eyes in the days after Lloyd's disappearance without seeing posters or something about her. We're a community that has also been transformed by his crimes. The impact of his crimes extends far beyond his crimes. What makes it more despicable is this a man considered above reproach," he says.

10:13 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: "He betrayed this community and he betrayed the military and he betrayed the men and the women who serve in the military. He was a leader in that base and in the community. He exploited that to divert suspicion from himself," Burgess continues. He contrasts Williams in one night trying to break in to a victim's house after he sexually assaulted her, while earlier dropping the puck at a Belleville hockey game. He carried the Olympic torch, the community came to cheer him on. "This man who had already committed the crimes," he says

10:16 smithjoanna: Comeau's family did not deliver victim impact statements yesterday, but Crown is giving them their say by proxy.

10:17 smithjoanna: Crown says it is the record of his crimes, not the dangerous offender label, that will keep RW in prison for the rest of his life. [via Twitter]

10:18 smithjoanna: Crown says he is not asking for dangerous offender status because it would only put family through pain of more proceedings.

10:16 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Burgess moves to victim impact statements now. The Comeau family has asked Burgess to speak for them. They want the court to know how difficult it is to convey how hard it is for them. Ernie Comeau, her dad, says Marie-France was his 'ray of sunshine.' He was proud of her choosing a career in the Canadian Forces. First , they learned that she died. Then they learned she'd been murdered. Then they learned she was murdered by man in authority. They consider it a "monstrous betrayal of trust." What were family celebrations are now times of mourning.

10:19 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt: "They were violated sir not only by this man's hands but by his limbs, two young women terrorized in their last hours, just for the sexual gratification of this man," he tells the judge. Burgess contrasts the image of Comeau, blindfolded and bloodied yet 'still fighting for her life" with the image of the man who murdered her with a piece of duct tape. He mentions how Lloyd cooperated to try and save her life, how Williams knew he'd killer but told her she would live if she did not fight. "David Russell Williams is simply one of the worst offenders in Canadian history," he says.

10:18 smithjoanna: Crown says he is not asking for dangerous offender status because it would only put family through pain of more proceedings.

10:19 smithjoanna: The family and victims in the courtroom just applauded as Crown prosecutor Lee Burgess wrapped up his closing statement.

10:19 smithjoanna: Crown also asked for sentence of 10yrs/sexual assault and 1 yr/break-in, to be served concurrently with 25-year life sentence.

10:20 smithjoanna: Defence lawyer Michael Edelson says they are in a "legal paradox", because no argument can change minimum life sentence.

10:21 smithjoanna: Edelson says not role of defence to address victim impact, but "we wish to acknowledge their suffering" & state publicly his empathy

I agree with you here, PP, that LE definitely made a major error in not looking at RW when the sexual attacks happen. They were so sure it was Larry Jones, and given the occupation of RW, he was overlooked, and that was a MAJOR error, IMO, especially when the dogs led LE to his house, the DNA came back that it was NOT Jones.

But I maintain that LE very swiftly and skillfully anaylzed the evidence upon JL's abduction, and did some very good police work.

Especially after seeing the confession extracted by Det.-Sgt. Jim Smyth and his team today, it only reinforces my opinion of them in this regard.

Is Det-Sgt.Smyth with the OPP Major Crime Unit? Previously, wasn't this case being handled at the local level by various area police departments? At some point, someone called in the big guns. Too bad they didn't do it earlier, like when LE in Tweed published a quarterly police report giving details of the SAs in Tweed, and the police dogs being brought in to track the suspects. It was there, online, waiting for someone to find it. Pity they didn't look.

10:23 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: The defence has no issue with what the Crown is proposing. "There is nothing that can be said to change the legal outcome and consequences here today," says defence lawyer Edelson. "It is not the role of the defence to specifically address the victim impact resulting from the crimes. But we wish to acknowledge their suffering and we take no issue with what crown counsel proposing," he reiterates.

10:22 smithjoanna: "It should be acknowledged that the act of pleading guilty to... 1st-degree murder in Canada is a rarity," says Edelson.

10:23 smithjoanna: To be clear: Crown is NOT asking for RW to be declared dangerous offender. Says record will keep him in prison forever.

10:23 smithjoanna: Edelson describing unwavering and unusual cooperation of RW with police following his Feb. 7 confession

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/876913

10:24 smithjoanna: Edelson describing how crucial his cooperation was to solving the crimes. Majority of break-ins had not even been reported

10:25 smithjoanna: Williams had 6 more police interviews after that confession was recorded, says Edelson

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/876913

10:26 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Williams is crouched over, as per usual. The defence acknowledges that pleading guilty to a charge of first-degree murder is a rarity. Even to one charge and he has done it for two. The defence notes the lengthy trial that was saved by doing this, lessening the turmoil caused by a trial and the costs. He says a case of this magnitude could've taken several years to reach a conclusion. "I t is important to note that only 17 of 48 homeowners had reported homes were broken into. Until he confessed, they were unable to identify a suspect," he says. He mentions how detailed Williams' confession was.

http://www.cbc.ca/politics/story/2010/10/21/russell-williams-day-four.html

10:27 smithjoanna: Edelson says his role is usually to describe background, personal circumstances of defendant, but doubts anything relevant unreported .

10:28 smithjoanna: Edelson says there remain many questions regarding motivation of RW but trying to answer them will have no effect on sentence

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/876913

10:28 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: He tells the court how Williams also consented to further police interviews over the next few months after his confession. They happened after he received legal advice. Though the accused in this country are not required to assist police. He physically led officers to Lloyd's body. "He also guided officers through his complicated folder system allowing access to the evidence of photos and video he took. Our client asserted clearly and early in the process his intention was to plead guilty to all of the crimes," he says.

Know what I'd like that Judge to include in RW's sentence? I'd like him to order RW to crawl from that prisoner's box on his knees and in front of that Judge verbally apologize to every creature he has ever harmed or robbed of their lives; to apologize to all womankind for his treatment of them like a thing to be used and abused and kicked, broken and lifeless to the curb; to all true Men who stand tall and honorably conduct themselves as Gentlemen; to all humanity for regressing civilization back to nothing more than its most base, primitive characteristics; ...and much more.

I'll spare you the rest of my inner scream.

10:29 smithjoanna: "It is hoped that perhaps in time his pleas of guilty might be viewed as an act of atonement by those he's scarred," Edelson says.

10:29 smithjoanna: Edelson says RW cannot expect forgiveness, but hopes the guilty pleas will, one day, help victims and families to heal. [via Twitter]

10:30 smithjoanna: "He will be in prison for the rest of his life, and he will only be *eligible* to apply for parole in 25 years," Edelson says

10:30 smithjoanna: Edelson insists, despite media speculation, that neither RW nor his counsel made any deals to get special treatment in prison

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/876913

As we recall, RW worked for a time in the personnel end of things at DND HQ. He could have accessed personal files long before he became base commander at CFB Trenton.

From reading at MFC FB site, I believe MFC had taken time off from the military at some point, during which time she became a flight attendant?

flight attendants are chosen from other "trades" in the military and rotate with others..it is not a permanent position..when not flying she would have had the usual desk job maybe down the hall even from the SOB... I can't comment on her "time off from military" but I doublt that was the case.. JMO

10:29 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: He says there are undoubtedly many questions about what drove him to commit his "heinous crimes" especially what caused the escalation. These questions and their answers will play no role in sentencing, he continues, but states it is important to remember his acceptance of responsibility and pleading of guilty.

http://www.cbc.ca/politics/story/2010/10/21/russell-williams-day-four.html

10:31 smithjoanna: "This day is not only about punishment and retribution. This day must also be viewed through the lens of the victim, focusing on (pain).

10:32 smithjoanna: Edelson: emotional impact of these crimes has been "seismic", beginning with victims & reverberating to community, military, Canada as whole

10:32 smithjoanna: "Russel Williams knows that he stands at the epicentre of these shockwaves," Edelson says.
