Monica Chisar is missing and police think it could be 'foul play' | CBC News

Hamilton police announced Friday morning that the service's major crime unit has taken over the investigation into the disappearance of missing person Monica Chisar.

Chisar was last seen by a friend in the area of Barton Street East and Parkdale Avenue North. Investigators say she has been missing since July 11, but was only reported missing by her family on Sept. 28.

"[The major crime unit] has conducted an overall analysis of the disappearance of Monica Chisar leading investigators to believe that there is a chance foul play exists," a police news release reads. "However, it remains a possibility that Monica is alive and has simply chosen to disappear for reasons only known to her.

"...this matter warrants the further resources that the [major crime unit] can provide for this investigation."

Police are asking the public to provide any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.

“Monica did not have much of a history in Hamilton but she had a wide circle of associates across the GTA. It is also believed that she had a connection to Kitchener, which is also of interest to us.”

The Major Crime Unit can be reached at (905) 546-3829."

A friend dropped her off at the Beer Store at Barton and Parkdale, with the expectation she was going to be spending the night at one of the apartments on Melvin avenue.

On Melvin there are several high-rise apartment buildings so Hamilton Police were unable to determine which one was her destination.

[MC] changes her appearance often. She had only been in Hamilton a few months and may have had a job lined up. She is known to use illicit drugs.

“She wanted to turn over a new leaf. She has a son in Mexico and wanted to be more part of his life. They haven’t heard from her either.” says [her sister].

'Foul play' suspected in disappearance of 'somewhat bohemian' Monica Chisar: police | CBC News

Chisar had worked as an escort and an exotic dancer, [Det. Sgt. D.O.] said, but police don't believe she was doing that work around the time of her disappearance. Her employment was "sporadic," he said. She also had a drug problem. [Det. Sgt. D.O.] said she owed people some money, but "that's all I'm going to say about that."

Disclaimer: I'm not posting this in a judgmental or gossipy way, but because I think it could be a factor in her disappearance.

Jesus, two and a half month between when she was last seen and when she was reported missing, four and a half months between when her body was found and when it was identified. Things move slow in Canada.

I assume she was left out in the elements for quite some time. She went missing in July 2018 and a body discovered in Dec 2019. It is a wooded area with wildlife, such as coyotes.

Wondering if Monica's recent tip to Europe played any role in her murder? imo, speculation.

HUNTER: Hamilton woman joins tragic Mount Forest body disposal roster
''The tiny community of about 5,000 people can be reached within two hours from Toronto, Hamilton, London and Kitchener.

It is painfully quiet except for the Tim Hortons, which always does a bustling business.

Yet for years, killers from outside the area have been dumping dead bodies in the vicinity''

“Monica was known to be a traveller and had just returned home from Europe prior to her disappearance,” Det.-Sgt. Jim Callender told reporters.''

''Monica Chisar had a wanderlust. At the time of her murder, there were more trips and adventures to anticipate.

Instead, the end of the line came outside Mount Forest.

The OPP have set up a dedicated tip line that goes directly to the detectives in the case at 1-855-677-4636. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.''

"This week on Tracking a Killer: The Cold Case Files, CityNews reporters Fil Martino and Madison Fitzpatrick take a look at the death of 28-year-old Monica Chisar.

The mother of one disappeared in Hamilton on July 11, 2018. Her body was found on Christmas Eve the following year by a father and son walking through a wooded area over 100 kilometres away from where she was last seen alive.

Over the years, police say they have interviewed hundreds of people in connection with this case and some have been re-interviewed.

But, during the production of this episode there was an arrest made, making this case closer to being a closed one.

The Ontario Provincial Police refer to their cold cases as historical homicides. Detective inspector Mary Louise Kearns with the Criminal Investigation branch has been working on this case since early 2021.

She says she is a big believer in the police’s ability to crack cold cases, “I think that when I started policing 28 years ago, we did not have the technology that we do now.”

You can listen to this weeks episode of Tracking a Killer: The Cold Case Files on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, The Frequency Podcast Network, or wherever you like to listen.''

Ahmet Nikqi, 41, of no fixed address, appeared in bail court in Hamilton Tuesday. His charges of second-degree murder and interfering with human remains were put over to April 5, to be spoken to in the Ontario Court of Justice bail court.

The court amended the spelling of his surname on Tuesday. Police had spelled it Nikci.

Nikqi’s charges relate to allegations of offences July 11, 2018 in Hamilton, the date police have said Chisar, 29, was last seen in Hamilton. Her family reported her missing in September 2018.

Hamilton police have said Chisar had just returned home from Europe before her disappearance. After her social media activities stopped, family grew concerned and reported her missing, police have said.

Chisar’s remains were found 15 months after she was reported missing, by a man and his son out walking in a wooded area off Southgate Road 10 on Dec. 24, 2019, police have said.

Police announced charges against Nikqi in August 2021, some three years after she went missing.

“As soon as I seen the suitcase, and the fact it was tied onto a moving dolly, and where it was, basically I didn’t like the look of that at all,” Schwass said.''

''Ahmet Nikci, a Kosovo expat, entered Canada illegally from the U.S. in 2012.

At the time, he was facing up to seven years in a U.S. prison after being convicted for punching and severely injuring someone in New York state.

According to Schwass, Hamilton’s Albanian community has a habit of harbouring illegals from the U.S. in exchange for under-the-table work here.

Nikci was put up in a Melvin Avenue apartment in Hamilton, where Monica wound up staying within a week of returning to Ontario.''

''He called a contact known as Rahoul, who Nikci stated had “moved bodies” in Mexico, to help dispose of Monica.
Nikci paid Rahoul $1,700 and encouraged him to dismember Monica’s body to fit it into her suitcase.''

This is infuriating!

Nikci pleaded guilty in Hamilton court on Dec. 6, 2022 to the lesser counselling charge, and to interfering with Monica’s remains.

(...)

The judge accepted the joint crown-defence sentencing submission.

With credit for time already served and harsh jail conditions, Nikci was handed five years and eight months to serve in a federal penitentiary.

After his sentence expires on Aug. 5, 2028, it’s expected he will be turned over to U.S. authorities to be dealt with there, and eventually deported to Kosovo.

All this guy got was 8 years! A travesty!

Edited to add that he seemed to only be handed 5 of those years due to time served and crowding.
