"Some Canadian Forces bases were locked down in response to the shooting, while most were monitoring the situation with heightened security.

The Canadian Department of National Defence said all armouries were secured, but access to the public is being restricted.

Military personnel in uniform are being asked not to make any stops — not even at gas stations, daycares, schools and elsewhere — while travelling between their base and home.

The Royal Canadian Legion in Windsor told CBC News that the shooting has them rethinking the security of poppy sellers this remembrance season."

Saw a reporter on Skype to Fox news say that downtown Ottawa had been put on high alert again. Can anyone confirm this ?

Superintendent Martine Fontaine of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said at a televised news conference that a special antiterrorism force had begun monitoring Mr. Rouleau in June and arrested him a month later when he was about to fly to Turkey. He was released for lack of evidence that he intended to join a terrorist group. Meetings between the Mounted Police and Mr. Rouleau, 25, continued until Oct. 9.

Terrorist in earlier attack this week

What happened today is not cool, and not Canadian. I hope that Canada goes full on against the people that are behind this insane ISIS attack. It was such a cowardly act to shoot a man that was honouring a war memorial. ISIS must be made of cowards if they think they've made a statement by murdering a man that was honouring those that fought to ensure freedom and safety.

It was a former Calgary RCMP that killed the gunman just metres from where the Prime Minister was meeting with his caucus ... that was a really close call. I'm sure that there will be a lot of change due to this. They were all sitting ducks except for one man as the final line of defence.

Tom Mulclair's NDP Leader comments are excellent! -- impressed hope to find a copy and post here

That was another pathetic cowardly attack! How hard is it to drive a car over two people that are walking in a parking lot?

This is bothersome IMO

Military personnel in uniform are being asked not to make any stops — not even at gas stations, daycares, schools and elsewhere — while travelling between their base and home.

It strikes me like they know more are out there, obviously after military what if then needed gas or had a kid in school?

"feels" signfigant as far as the rest of this evening goes

City of Ottawa Mayor, Jim Watson, has stated that the lockdown has been lifted.
City of Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau has informed Mayor Watson that lockdown has been lifted...

I do not have links to this confirmation though but will search other media outlets for more info..

ITA

I have referred to the coward as a lone wolf which is sad a wolf is a noble family animal. Am thinking hyena or jackal would be a more apt term.....

I guess they have to keep everything on lockdown until they are sure that these incidents are not going to escalate into further violence and attacks. The running down of soldiers yesterday, the murder and attack today …… very scary stuff.

They also believe that this gunman today was not alone. They need to find the other(s) that they believe he was in cahoots with.

Something must have occurred to make them ease up on the lockdown and then reinstate it. I got the feeling from the reporter that it wasn't just Parliment, sounded like it was all of downtown. Are they blocking off roads in and out of city? Anyone know?

Meet the hero who shot down Parliament Hill gunman
Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers called 'natural leader' by family

A retired RCMP officer who once served in Calgary, 58-year-old Vickers is known to most Canadians as the symbol of order at the House of Commons: a grey-haired man in a black hat and robes, often carrying the ceremonial sceptre of Canada over his shoulder.

On Tuesday, Vickers reportedly showed just how serious his role really is, the head of security for Canada’s government killing a gunman who charged into the Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

Not trying to distract anyone.

BUT did any U.S. people watch the most recent episode of "Madam Secretary"?

There was a quip in the latest episode when Beth asked if the Canadian Ambassador was angry that she missed her meeting with him.

A staff member said "in a Canadian sort of way" he's pissed. This kind of carp just perpetuates that Canadians are ineffectual when we all now know that ISIS has targeted Canadians rather that the U.S.. as of now.

No, roads, highways in and out of the city are not closed or blocked
Our city runs East-West, Parliament Hill is on the Northern part of the city...Wellington St on one side and a cliff behind the Parliament at the back
The parts of downtown Ottawa that are closed off are Wellington St (directly infront of Parliament Hill) and some surrounding streets...it is the center core surrounding Parliament only

earlier today all bridges leading between Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec were closed then opened with heavy Law Enforcement presence checking every vehicle crossing the bridges between Ottawa and Gatineau
