Thank you so much for searching, and welcome to WS, DxD.
Sadly, what you describe has been my exact thought from the very begging. In fact, I posted something very similar, citing the same reasons as to why Adam might have gone to Washington Park (i.e., he posted from there just two weeks before he went missing, as well as in Oct., and his obvious love of nature):

It has been widely reported surveillance video appears to show him leaving in the opposite direction of his apartment. Google Maps suggests three possible walking routes from Syntax to Adams apartment, and all of three take you north on S Broadway first:

Adams apartment is located northeast of Syntax. When they say he was heading in the opposite direction of his apartment, do they mean he was heading west, crossing S Broadway toward Sams Club, Home Depot, etc., or was he heading south?
Because if he did go to the South Lake (also known as Grasmere Lake, as I understand ... please correct me if Im wrong, as Im not local) after leaving Syntax, he likely would have headed south, IMO:

In my previous post, I was focusing on Smith Lake as a viable search location, but looking at Google Maps, South Lake makes more sense to me due to its location in relation to Syntax.
If he was captured crossing Broadway, heading west, however, most of the above is much less relevant. It would be nice to know exactly which direction Adam was headed.
Here are some starts on the two lakes:
South/Grasmere (Surface Area: 16.5 acres; Max Depth: ~ 10 ft):

Smith (Surface Area: 18 acres; Max Depth: ~ 10 ft):

I am also curious to know if the lakes were already frozen at the time of Adams disappearance.
By the way, could this be the gentleman you mentioned (the one who was found in the lake after going missing a few weeks prior
):
