The newest name in the CBI's missing-persons cold-case file is Amy Ahonen, No. 11703 in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database.

When Kacey Wilkins thinks of her bubbly friend, she remembers being too pregnant and tired to meet her for dinner at a restaurant. A half-hour later, Amy showed up at the door with a feast and her cheery, dimpled smile.

"I think of all the times she was there for people," Wilkins said on a cold Saturday morning outside Park Hill Village Condos, where Ahonen used to live.

The day after Ahonen was reported missing, 50 people met at her church, Epiphany Lutheran, near Washington Park, to make a plan to bring her home. The passion was tremendous.
"We were all in complete disbelief and shock, but at the same time, you realize something has to be done," Wilkins recalled from

They hung posters. They started websites. They raised money for billboards. Her Facebook page has nearly 10,350 fans. It hasn't been enough.

Not sure if this link has been posted....

I've been following the Sierra Lamar case and can't help think of the disparity ... so, so many searching for Sierra (that's good), while Amy doesn't get enough attention (that's sad).

For some reason, I've been thinking about Amy a lot today. She has such a beautiful smile. :)

Poor Amy is not media material. She is over the age of 21. There was no drama surrounding her or her family. She was just a normal woman who went missing and that is not salacious (sp?) enough.

It is so sad for her family.

Surfie - I too am thinking of Amy, for some reason with the arrest of the perp in Sierra Lamar's case that resulted from lots of LE hours of work, I thought (well crystalgenie says it perfectly above!)

It's almost been one year since Amy disappeared and....nothing. Hopefully the anniversary will prompt some coverage by Denver media.

For those who aren't familiar with her case, Amy disappeared from a pull-off area along Highway 6, about 7 miles west of Golden Colorado. It's a very scenic area, the highway runs through the mountains along Clear Creek. Her unlocked Jeep Cherokee was found parked in the pull-off area, with her keys, purse and phone inside...so it didn't appear that she was going hiking. At the time, Clear Creek was swollen and rushing due to the snow melting in the mountains, so police initially thought she may have fallen in. But there has been no sign of her in Clear Creek, and being familiar with that area myself, I think it's unlikely (although possible) that she could have been in the river for this long without her body or some sign of her being found. There was a report that someone driving by may have seen her with a man that day, but it's unclear how reliable that sighting was. She also had an issue with a man who responded to a Craigslist ad for a roommate she had posted some time earlier, the man had scared her enough to immediately remove the ad.

It does seem like Amy just vanished into thin air. Her family has been active with their Find Amy Facebook site...

http://www.facebook.com/helpfindamy

...but they are at a disadvantage because they are far from Colorado in Michigan. Amy had relatively recently moved to Denver before her disappearance. She also lived in Florida for awhile, so there will be a fund raising event at:

Blu Sushi in Fort Myers on July 8. The family desperately needs to raise funds to hire a private investigator.

Is her last seen site near where the wildfires are? Perhaps the fires will uncover something - praying they do not destroy evidence.

Good thought, but she was last seen directly west of Denver/Golden in the foothills and there haven't been any fires in that area.

Family marks anniversary of Amy Ahonen’s disappearance

This weekend marks a painful anniversary for the family of a missing Denver woman. 38 year old Amy Ahonen was last seen on July 8th, 2011. Her unlocked Jeep was found abandoned on US 6 in Clear Creek canyon on July 10th. Her purse, wallet and car keys were still inside.

Investigators originally thought Ahonen may have fallen in the raging river, but a search turned up nothing.

On Friday, Ahonen’s family flew in from Michigan to meet with Denver police detectives and get the latest on the investigation. “It’s frustrating,” Amy’s sister Andrea Ahonen told us. “Nobody knows anything and DPD still hasn’t figured anything out.”

Search For Missing Woman Reaches One Year Mark

Nearly one year after Amy Ahonen disappeared, 7NEWS has learned her family will be back in Colorado to meet with Denver police detectives.

[snip]

While in Colorado, Ahonen's family will travel to the spot along Highway 6 where Amy's vehicle was found. They will also go to her Denver apartment and hold a candlelight event at the Epiphany Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Definitely not for closure," said Annette Ahonen. "Some peace for my family."

Today is Amy's birthday. I wish she was home to celebrate with her family. :(

Such a sad case! Confusing one too... wish one of the ID or Dateline shows would do a story about her! Need media attention.

This is so sad... Without the extensive media coverage and community coming together to try to find Mickey Shunick here in LA, I doubt we would have a suspect (and possible serial killer) behind bars today. I didn't realize so many others don't have that media coverage and are silently vanishing.. That's how these bastards are able to get away with these horrible crimes for so long. WE are letting them. One missing woman should not get more public attention then another because of her age, race, eye/hair color, height/weight, background, Etc. Every one of these women are DAUGHTERS, sisters, aunts, MOTHERS!! Everyone deserves our immediate attention and help to locate them safely! Too many lost women are shrugged away as "drug related, voluntarily missing, not news worthy, etc" early on and precious time is lost in the search for them... Prayers for Amy's loved ones and an extra prayer this case gets the media/public attention it deserves so her family/friends can have answers

The key to finding some of the thugs taking women lately has been extensive searching of surveillance camera media.

Sierra Lamar's case is a really good example, Mickey Shunick's case is a good example.

I wonder how much of this was done in Amy's case?

I imagine it takes allot of resources to find, get hold of, and go through whatever surveillance media there is.. but that seems to be the best tool these days. It has to be done in the early days of an investigation, when it's often easy sit back figuring one's disappearance as being intentional.

That's a great point, Steve, and it should have been done, but the area where she disappeared and the route she took may have lessened the chance of any video of worth being captured.

She probably took I-70 from her apartment to Hwy 58, which turns into Hwy 6 and goes into the mountains along Clear Creek. And her apartment was right off I-70, so that's a lot of highway with a small chance of being caught on video to see if someone had been in her Jeep with her (and we've seen that most highway cameras around the country don't record). The area around where she went missing is very undeveloped, so I think the only chance for her to be captured on video would have been at a gas station in Golden or along I-70. Another problem is...if she had left in somebody else's car then the camera video would have to be able to identify her inside the car, unless she got out of the car at a gas station obviously. Hopefully the gas stations in Golden and on I-70 were at least flyered. There are also the casino towns of Central City and Blackhawk farther up in the mountains along her route. I know people had suggested the casino cameras be checked (even though it doesn't seem that gambling was something Amy was interested in) but I don't know if LE did.

But if some guy got her in his vehicle and took her up one of the mountain backroads in the area...probably no chance of surveillance video in that scenario.

I think there's still a lot of worth in checking out the people who came in contact with her in her life in general, obviously including the Craigslist guy. It's so sad to see Amy's family unable to afford a PI to follow up those things. Some other obvious things are any phone activity she had that day and, I hate to say this, but the mechanics of how the water from Clear Creek is taken in to Coors or any other industry downstream of where she went missing.

It just seems like there are so few clues as to what happened to Amy that day. It looked like she had just stepped away from her car for a few minutes and someone driving by may have seen her with a man by the river at about 2 pm the day she went missing...that's about all we know.

Amy’s family and friends remain dedicated to the search for her.

“Amy is on our minds every day,” her sister said.

Her many friends in the Denver area still have missing posters featuring Amy’s picture and information in coffee shops, in order to keep her face in people’s minds.

The family recently traveled to Denver for prayer service at the church Amy attended. They met with detectives who have been working on the case and were given the chance to say what they needed to say and ask questions.

“There are still no leads in Amy’s case. But I think it was reassuring to talk with the detectives in person, rather than on the phone,” Ahonen said.
The family was in Denver for Amy’s 39th birthday.

“We took my parents to a lot of places that Amy would have loved to visit with them,” she said.

When the Ahonens were in Colorado, the local news aired stories updating Amy’s case and putting her face back in the public eye to remind people that she is still missing.

Friends and family are working on fundraisers in Michigan, Florida and Colorado to raise money to hire a private investigator to search for Amy.

“We’re hoping that a private investigator could take a different angle and look into things that the police couldn’t,” Ahonen said.

A bowling fundraiser to raise money for a private investigator was held Aug. 4 at Skore Lanes in Taylor.

There also is a Facebook page, Find Amy Ahonen, dedicated to sharing happy memories of Amy and raising awareness about her case. More information about Amy’s case, and the fundraisers can be found at www.findamy.org.

Family members also asked investigators to find the man who responded to a roommate ad Amy placed on Craig’s list. Amy thought he was so “creepy” she immediately took the ad down. Andrea said police searched Amy’s computer but found nothing.

I am still in awe at the amount of resources; 40+ local, state, and federal agencies, as well as the amount of awareness generated in the Jessica Ridgeway abduction/murder.

Imo, sexual predators do not begin their deviant behavior dismembering their victim's bodies, taunting investigators, and collecting and storing body parts in their crawl spaces. Imo, many serial killers prior begin their evil trails of terror at around the age of 14 years old...If this pattern holds true Austin Reed Siggs should be investigated for all missing persons from the Westminister area over the past 3 years...
