In his opening statements, Letecia’s defense attorney argued that his client suffered abuse during her own childhood which resulted in what’s known as fragmentation of her personality. Counsel further stated that experts would be brought in to testify about associative identity disorder, which was formerly known as multiple personality disorder.

Generally, the insanity defense is an allegation of a mental health condition, resulting in the inability of the defendant to know right from wrong at the time the crime is committed. In Colorado, the defense must prove that the mental impairment led to the crime.

Here are 3 things you should know about the insanity defense:

  1. The defendant admits they committed the crime. Even if it is a silent admission, the parties agree that the person killed the victim.
  2. An expert must testify for the defense as to the mental impairment of the defendant. And that as a result of the mental impairment, the defendant did not know right from wrong at the time the crime was committed. Often the prosecution will present testimony from their own experts, resulting in a battle of the experts.
  3. When an insanity defense is being presented, juries generally want to hear from the defendants themselves. That way, jurors can make their own assessments as to whether defendants were insane when their alleged crimes were committed.

Letecia is seen checking her pockets, stretching, pulling her hair up, going through her bag, etc. as she is in the room by herself. She then asked to use the restroom, and when she returned, she asked if she could go to sleep. She then lays on the couch to rest.

Alone in interview room. She appeared to take at least one pill, said aloud, "I peed in my pants a little". Stuck some tissues in her pants. Said "My pants are wet" LE comes in, tells her she can go to bathroom but don't wipe and don't flush. Comes back in room. She is alone. She lays down for a bit. Gets up piles her hair on top of her head. Paces room quite a while. Now is asking for help. Says she has chest pains, can't breathe. Tells LE through speaker she needs help. She is starting a meltdown. Someone comes in room. Says she is having panic attack. She is very agitated. Agrees to medical attention. Wants anxiety medicine. She is told they will call an EMT. She wants them to leave door open. She doesn't seem to be in pain, arguing with LE about leaving door open. Says she hasn't taken her anxiety medication today. LE says paramedics in lobby. They are going to bring them up. LE trying to calm her down by suggesting she think of favorite place she likes to travel.

Gentleman that took her phone is the one that is outside the door making sure that she does not leave. She put jacket back on. Sat down on the couch after pacing back and forth awhile. Man is telling her to sit down on the couch, she said I can't breathe. Said she has anxiety attacks, needs med and they will have her checked out.

She requested medical attention.

Ohhhh gahhhh, now we have the really bad chest pains... I can't breathe. She only wanted to keep the door open because she can't breathe. He firmly says no... now we're going to get you medical treatment. She then gets combative with the guy.

Letecia is in the room by herself, seen getting up, walking around, stretching, etc. She then asks if the door can be left open, because she said she is having chest pains, is claustrophobic, has bad anxiety and said she feels like she’s having a panic attack.

At this point, Letecia has been in the room for four hours. She was told she needs to sit on the couch. She said she just wants the door open and her medication. She also said she wants to receive medical attention because her chest is hurting.
