Whatever it was that I just read, it was wonderful too see Americans exercising their freedom of speech. Thank you.
 
The point being addressed is that teachers in the assault videos have not been arrested. The fact the gym teacher has not been arrested means nothing.

And a couple of parents from the school have said this was blown out of proportion. And that might be the case because we do not know if there was a physical assault or not.

And the fact that she was not arrested when the police arrived does mean something. If he had any visible injuries, I do believe she would have been.

There was an accusation. As far as I know, INNOCENT until proven Guilty. And she hasn't even been charged with anything, nor fired, nor demoted.

Correct. She was put on administrative leave while police and the school investigate the allegations. School policy allows students to sit or stand during the pledge.

agreed...it is a control technique,

im just curious as to what you would suggest doing if a child in a school misbehaves?.....won't do what he/her is told, talks back to a teacher, swears at a teacher, throws food at a teacher, runs out of class, runs out of the school, throws desks and chairs around the classroom, etc etc.....what is your suggestion if a teacher can not touch a child?.....i have seen all of the above happen first hand....so what would you do?

To clarify, none of those scenarios are reported to have happened in this instance.

MSM sources (linked above) say the school’s policy is that students can *sit or stand* during the pledge.

Out of curiosity, I compared the list of states that allow corporal punishment in schools (link above) with the ranking of school performance by state (link: https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-the-best-schools/5335/).

The number after the state name is the ranking, 1 being the best ranking school system in the nation, 51 being the worst of the 50 states plus District of Columbia. So, the closer to 51, the worse the ranking.

This is what happenes when instead of sparing the rod, we spare the child. We have students assaulting/murdering teachers, bringing guns to school, metal detectors, and guards at the doors, police officers walking the halls, lock down drills, and on, and on.

I can give citations if people wish. The students that cause problems have been abused or have witnessed domestic violence. Give them the rod or give the mother the rod and that is what we get.
 
This child, as is his right, declined to stand for the pledge. Many in our country see our country in a state of crisis and distress, and injustice is struggling to be addressed and recognized. I'm heartened to know that this child is aware of current events and recognizes his country is in trouble, and is engaging in a form of peaceful protest. For those of us who love our country it is a fearful, frustrating time. I can't say I happily pledge allegiance right now either. This teacher is absolutely in the wrong and I hope she's fired. It's never ok to lay hands on a child in the classroom, never. Especially when what the child is doing is a good thing! Exercising his right to protest! This teacher could have turned this into a wonderful teaching opportunity to discuss why the student was choosing not to stand, and engaging the classroom in a discussion about what allegiance to our country/flag means to them individually and to explore some of the societal challenges we are currently facing resulting in many feeling they are no longer living in a country of which they can be proud. She forgot her role as a teacher.

Why do you think this teacher might think it’s OK to force a student to do something they aren’t required to do?

Is it more important to be obeyed, or to be right? Is there a difference?

That's true what the other poster said Giucy, I'm just trying to make a little point, and your not really being very nice about it.

I and most people I know got spankings when we were kids, and there was nothing sick about it . Sometimes we deserved, and needed them.

Actually, no. Not all of us got spankings. I am 68. No spankings, My children got no spankings. And my grandchildren got no spankings. My children are all married for several years. They and their spouses all have college degrees and have profesiional jobs. Only one grandchild is old enough to be in college and he was President of the Student Senate.

As a teacher, I would never even consider hitting a student. Those days are long gone in Minnesota, thank goodness. It seems absurd that it is even considered. What does physical punishment or verbal shaming teach? Would you like to be hit or shamed? Then why is it OK to do it to children?

I know what it teaches and it is not good.

I’m not sure allowing corporal punishment is the gauge by which school or children’s formative success should be judged. (Talk about criminal, literally.) IMO ✌️❤️ 🧐

As a teacher, it used to be considered positive to be in control and be the authoritarian in the classroom. I think that is why so many adults hate school.

Some in education got smarter and now we know there are approaches that work. We have to give students a sense of power. If they have a sense of being respected, then great things happen. Think of your ownself. If someone pulls power plays on you and shames you, is that positive for you? Do you respect the person that does power plays on you and shames you? Maybe someone does. Most of us would not like that.

Teachers who have to pull the control issue on a student need to take a step back and ask themselves what their own issues are. Why are they threatened by this? What does it indicate about issues the teacher has with his or her own sense of self?

There are wonderful methods of establishing relationships with students. The first couple of weeks need to be donated to making relatonships. Establishing classroom rules with students is step one. Rules that you can call upon if needed.

It is a thing of beauty to be in a classroom where you have made relationships with students. I always worked in the schools of poverty. My students had big issues.

I wish I had known what I knew in the last few years before I retired. Relationships relationships relationships. The only thing that works. And make relationships with the parents as well. I get teary eyed thinking of changing the world where kids at school are treated like human beings with emotions, needs, ideas, etc etc etc.

I havent read what the 'assault' involvex actullly was. All i imagine is the student was a wise *advertiser censored* lunk and the teacher grabbed his/her arm to make him stand up. Were the details published?

There are no details. All we know is a teacher was 'accused' of assault. We don't know if the accusation is true. It's under investigation and the teacher is on paid administrative leave.
 
Anyone who thinks that a teacher (or anyone else) has or should have the right to coerce a student (verbally or physically) into participating in the pledge is misinformed.

The Supreme Court decision West Virginia Board of Education vs Barnette in 1943 settled once and for all that a student cannot be forced to participate in the flag salute (and by principle other patriotic activities.)

From the decision:

“If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion, or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein. If there are any circumstances which permit an exception, they do not now occur to us."

“Freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order."

"To believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous, instead of a compulsory routine, is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds."

There is really nothing left to say. No one can force anyone to participate. Period. School policy must support this decision. This is a Supreme Court ruling, binding on all public schools. The teacher, even if she attempted to gently move the student into a standing position, would be wrong. What she did could be considered assault in a broad sense, even if she did not strike the child. JMO

Jehovah’s Witnesses, who took this case to the Supreme Court, normally stand for the pledge, but do not put their hand over their heart or say the pledge. However, standing is an individual choice to show respect, not a requirement. My husband taught many witness children over the years. Jehovah’s Witnesses are politically neutral, so refusing to pledge allegiance to the flag or sing the national anthem is not a matter of protest in their case, but the Supreme Court ruling concerning them in 1943 benefits everyone’s freedom to make a conscientious decision.
