I would never point, but I would urge parents be more vigilant. Know your children's friends, where they're going, if their plans change they need to call, need to check in regularly. I've always told mine I need to know where, when and who. In this case, I don't think it would have made any difference. IMO she was dead as soon as they got her downstairs.

BBM. Do you think he had help? More than one perp?

And some private defense attorneys are appointed by the Court when it's a death penalty case, at least here in NC, ala the Jason Williford case. He had three (count 'em three!) attorneys which the People of NC had to pay for.

I only know about Oregon, so it could be different in CO... but court appointed defense attorneys here are only compensated ~$25 per hour. The attorney I worked for used to volunteer to be a court-appointed attorney and that is what he was compensated, while still handling his private caseload, and the guy had just under 20 years experience and normally charged $175+ per hour. I'm thinking in higher profile cases, or just complicated cases, they need to appoint more than one attorney simply because the amount of work involved in the case is tremendous. If a defendant in this sort of crime could afford to hire a private attorney, they would most certainly also have a paralegal, multiple associates, and even co-counsel working on the case... all the support a law firm could provide. Pro bono attorneys usually do that work on their own time/dime.

You know the little jerk was sweating it out when the cops were searching the house. It just makes me angry how he played games with the cops the way he did with that backpack.

I of course am very angry that he killed Jessica to begin with. Don't want to leave that out.

Me too.

He is a monster.

I really don't want to derail this thread anymore with the whole "Dark Net" discussion, but I would like to clarify a few things. One-there have been no links posted to any dark net site. The links I included in my OP were articles explaining what the Dark Net is, for those who haven't heard of it. Even if links to the DW were posted, they wouldn't bring up anything because you can't access them on a regular browser. You need to install Tor Browser to view it. It is not something you can accidentally stumble across or google.

Two-Using Tor is NOT illegal. Some people use it for the same reason they might use a proxy browser-because it gives you anonymity online. It can protect against identity theft, it can be a safer way to conduct financial transactions, and with all of the new surveillance laws we have in place now, some people would simply like to protect their privacy from government surveillance. Journalists can use it as a way to interact with anonymous sources. Victims of political oppression can use it to communicate with the outside world. There are many, many legitimate uses for Torand other like services. But just as with anything in life, there are some who use it for nefarious purposes.

I do not suggest that anyone go exploring the dark web, unless they know exactly what they are doing. But people here seem to assume that this whole thing is much more nefarious than it actually is.

To my knowledge, no one here (including me, for the record) has broken the law, and I would appreciate it if people would not make those kinds of insinuations.

Have a quick question and didn't want to post in the thread. This Dark Net thingy...is this where pedophiles and child pornographers post stuff? I have never in all my years of surfing the regular way ever accidentally run across illegal stuff. ( thank goodness) I have often wondered how those freaks manage to meet up all the time and form rings and trade illegal stuff.

Wow! Brazen? Bold? or couldn't see a way out of it?

Since he has such a profound interest in criminal forensics, I wonder if he just couldn't resist inserting himself into the investigation.

Now that people know Sigg to be the killer, I wonder if anyone remembers seeing him at Jessica's vigil or memorial service.

ETA: First statement is regarding Sigg's voluntarily submitting DNA

And it's only $1.99 on Kindle right now! Just downloaded it and look forward to reading it. We should start a WS Book Club! Who's in?

Wow! That's cheaper by far than the hardcover I bought years ago! WS Book CLub? IM IN!

I agree with much of what you are saying in the post above.
I do think it is odd that more young people are committing these kind of horrific acts.

However, before the internet existed, people like Ted Bundy and Dahmer, Charles Xng, etc. were performing similar atrocities. I would like to see some honest statistical research(ha ha good one I know...), or at least analysis without an agenda, to demonstrate the full spectrum of these incidents. If we could see that the numbers may be dropping, but the criminals are in a much different age bracket, that would be helpful information.

I happen to believe that one of the major problems in our society which contributes to the swelling numbers of kids who are interested in this violent material, is the sexually repressed environment we live in. Yes, the United States, on the surface a country in which sexual metaphor can be found in all kinds of advertising (including hamburgers), is sexually repressed.
All day long, violence of one sort or another is replayed on news programs. At the same time, Janet Jackson's exposed nipple is cause for public outcry, huge fines, the involvement of the Supreme Court, and congressional hearings. The fact that the simple exposure of a woman's nipple created so many problems is ridiculous. It is a breast. Babies often nurse on breasts. Men can show off their tatas in public, so why is a little extra fatty tissue a big deal? If I was from a foreign country and I heard about this incident, I would immediately think the U.S. lived under the guidance of some very puritanical rules.

My point is that those things which are not given a natural comfortable place in society, will take root in the underbelly of society and become more seductive due to the repressed nature of the topic.
Sorry to ramble, I just feel as though the healthiest and quickest way to change this obsession is to stop making the human body such a big deal. It is just too confusing to be constantly bombarded with things of a sexual nature, or innuendo, but not have the comfort level to discuss them openly with people.

Somewhere along the way there was something possibly misunderstood in that I do not believe that the detailed negative components in my post create these type predatory criminals..just as you mentioned they have long since existed way prior to the forms of media of which I speak.. I do however strongly believe that individuals who are already predisposed to many factors that tend to be present in these predatory criminals(genetics, abuses, dysfunctional environments, etc, etc)..those already predatory type of individuals imo when introduced and immersed heavily into the forms of negative content media imo can have explosively negative results..

Again nowhere do I believe these medias CREATE the predatory criminal..

Also something that somehow was misconstrued is that making the human body less taboo has absolutely zero to do with excessive immersion into extremely violent video and role playing "games", nor would it have a thing in the world to do with dark sadistic *advertiser censored* where sexual deviancy and sadistic pain inflicted upon children as well as adults is the large arousal factor in the *advertiser censored*..

No amount of making the human body less taboo has anything to do with, nor would it in any way positively impact those who have come to have obsessive and excessive habits of viewing and interacting in these particular negative medias..

ETA: NO MAS...no more for me on this subject that imo has sidetracked and for whatever reason misconstrued into something other than EXACTLY WHAT HAS BEEN STATED BY SEVERAL OF US..feel free to disagree til the cows come home I'll certainly not engage one way or the other as ITS VERY CUT&DRY WHAT SIMPLE OBSERVATION WAS MADE ABOUT EXCESSIVE/OBSESSIVE HABITS OF INTERACTION WITH EXTREMELY DEVIANT PARAPHILIAS OF *advertiser censored* AND EXTREMELY VIOLENT MEDIA = NEGATIVE OUTCOMES, PERIOD..end of subject..

Question: what area did they search? Did they search AS house? If so they would probably look in the crawl space. Just curious.

I think it is okay, but I appreciate your feelings. I believe they were put here for that purpose, just like we eat cows, chickens, fish. My son who is a doctor said the hardest thing he had to do was the testing on live animals who ultimately did die. He said he cried. As long as it is done for a purpose and with no cruelity I believe it is okay. But, not as apparently these people are doing it and I certainly don't think it is okay on a human being. This goes beyond a civilized reason and the person doing it is not a person in his right mind. jmo
Part of a job I used to have in the past, was working with reptiles. They were fed mice, rats, and in the case of the larger ones, rabbits. It used to bother me initially, I've had mice, rats and rabbits as pets throughout my life. But. these particular animals were raised to be either sent to labs, or feeders. I got used to it. (Though I would leave the room after giving the large pythons their rabbit. I could not watch it).

Sorry I have been reading too long, and apparently can no longer phrase questions correctly. Did they search his house in the beginning of the investigation?

Me too.

He is a monster.

I agree nurse. Just saw the news report about his court appearance today.

According to the reporter he was totally calm, alert, participating, asked the judge some questions about his rights. Took the time to get his hair all nice and spiky before his grand entrance. Looked over at the Ridgeway family, briefly, but showed no reaction at all. His family members were sobbing and he did not even acknowledge them.

That shows me he has no remorse. And he should receive no mercy :furious:

Unfortunately, that's what a trial is, usually... making sure the accused gets a fair trial. However, most prosecutors do try to keep their focus on the victim, and when it's a child, I kind of think that most people will keep that in mind.

But that said, I have to bring up a point. It's becoming common now for the general public to hate defense attorneys, especially when they have to defend a person for murder. If you think about it, though, they have a job to do, and they have to do the best job they can do, whether they believe in their client's innocence or not. If they do a really bad job on purpose, they can get into serious trouble, and can even be disbarred. Someone has to do what they do, because our constitution states that every person accused of a crime deserves the right to a fair trial, and attorneys are bound by law to give them the best defense they can. I have more respect for some defense lawyers than I do for some prosecutors, because I'm sure some of them have to defend the worst of the worst. Either they are public defenders or have been appointed by the court, in which case they don't have a choice. Of course, I don't like sleazy lawyers, who does?

Whoever represents this kid, whether they're hired by the parents or appointed by the court, will have to do everything in his or her power to give him the best defense he/she can... whether we like it or not.

Oh you're absolutely right, that's how our system works and nobody should do a subpar job anywhere, including defense attorneys. I guess I sit and analyze how many systems failed so darn miserably to allow a little girl walking to school to be killed in such a way by this predator. Maybe nobody failed him, nothing went wrong and it was just him and he wouldn't have been stopped until he killed and got caught.

It's absurd how many sexual predators and violent offenders are given pathetic sentences (which I fear could happen here), let out early, and given a golden paved path back to society so they can re-victimize. I get into a lively debate often with friends and it usually follows the same pattern. They ask me how I would feel if I was wrongly accused of a crime (or not wrongly?), or my loved ones were -- wouldn't I want the best defense no matter what. Of course. I also know that if I was a violent threat to society and had committed an awful crime (or my family member had), I would come to the soul wrenching acceptance that said person must pay for their crime and be where they belong.

I don't dislike all defense attorneys by any means, I go on a case by case basis. Actually I have huge admiration for several. I know they can't pick and choose just the innocent clients, but I can't appreciate a defense attorney who specializes in defending repeat sexual offenders because it's their job. Personally I wouldn't be able to open the gates for predators allowing them back onto the streets because that's how the system works. But we're all entitled to liberty and justice, all of us.

Found it ... it's at the bottom of the list:

"Public defenders argued that Sigg should be released on bond, saying he has no criminal history and is a low flight risk. But Chief Deputy Deputy District Hal Sargent said Sigg poses a threat to the community and cited "overwhelming evidence" against the teen, including a DNA match and his confession. The judge ordered Sigg held without bond.

... Jessica's mother was wearing a purple ribbon in her hair.

... Sigg appeared calm through the proceedings and almost looked like more of an observer. At one point, Sigg interrupted the judge because he said he didn't understand a portion of the advisement hearing.

So, even if Sigg is convicted of murder, Storey said, "because he's a juvenile we would have to have a sentencing hearing to see if he would actually even get life." Sigg revoked the waiver of his Miranda rights that he signed when he was arrested Tuesday night. That means he cannot be questioned without his attorneys present.

Westminster police said they received a call Tuesday evening that led them to Sigg's home

Otto, I was looking for the same post! I read it too. He has Public Defenders and I'm glad. I dont think they will horse around as much as a hired atty.. They are good. I nearly feel over when I read he asked for release on bond. He chopped the sweet girl up for gods sake and he should get bond? he should never see the light of day!!! :denied:

Dad's statement didn't sound like he was going to be pitching in for a first rate defense attorney. Glad to hear that.

There was a statement on channel 9 that said the police had searched the house and interviewed Austin weeks ago, but didn't have enough for an arrest.

Are the cops now claiming they suspected him all along?

Do you remember when that article came out, I missed it. tia

I will be curious to discover where he claims to have dismembered her versus where he did dismember her. I simply cannot imagine him performing this act in the open space but am also trying to figure out how he would pull this act off at the family home. Even if mom was at work and middle school aged (reportedly) sibling was at school, that is only a matter of hours to desecrate this poor child's remains and clean up any associated mess before other family members return home.

Last I heard, police were still looking for the murder/dismemberment location. Apparently Austin Sigg is forthcoming about "hog tying his victim and she was strangled while he was driving" ... did it to herself ... blame the victim. What else is new. How this guy was considered a CSI genius is beyond me. He was playing games with investigators, in my opinion, thinking that he could outsmart everyone by pretending to be clever ... in his own head. Too bad this CSI crowd couldn't identify the murderer amongst them.

There doesn't appear to be a back shed in the yard, but there is an RV parked in the driveway beside the house ... per bing. Does dad own an RV and where was it parked at the time that Jessica was abducted? Where was it parked when Austin's mom called the police? I think I read upthread that the family had been in the house since at least 2001. The bing image would be from the time that the family lived there ... so ... who owns the RV and ... where is the actual murder/dismemberment sight.

suspecthouse.jpg

Did mom contact dad before reporting to police that she thought their son might be involved in the murder and "not intact" -ness of Jessica Ridgeway? I suspect she did ... and I'm curious about when dad got the call. Is dad in Mexico and how long has he been there?

That's one of the ways it is utilized, but the "Dark Net", or "Deep Web" (there are a number of terms used for it) is basically just internet pages that can only be accessed by a certain type of browser-a Tor Browser. You can find more information about it here:

[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOR_%28anonymity_network%29[/ame]

It's basically the wild west of the internet-completely unregulated. You can find just about anything on it-good bad and very ugly.
