I am going to give this case a bump. Oakey 'Al' Kite seemed a very nice man and it was a very brutal and apparently random murder and he suffered torture. There has been a recent DNA Phenotyping done in this case so I wonder if DNA genealogy could be used to identify the killer as in the Golden State Killer case. One thing for certain Robert Cooper was a very dangerous man:

The Parabon labs sketch of the POI is hopeful.

Has anyone heard if they are taking the next step— identifying the POI like they did with the Golden State Killer—through DNA and finding genetic relatives/ancestry??

Good post this killer was a frightening guy the Parabon profile was of someone of Mediterranean decent. The Golden State Killer turned out to be Italian when it was originally thought he was likely Germanic via England to the US perhaps. Worth trying to get this case solved.

I know these have probably been posted in links before but I am going to post the CCTV image of the suspect in this case along with the composite sketch of the suspect. Al Oakey Kite sounded like a very nice man targeted by what I think was likely a maniac who was a stranger to him. Interesting the killer seemed perfectly happen to target a male victim in this case. My feeling is he was a Serial Killer and may have targeted females or couples in other attacks. These are of course just my theories:

I can't help but believe that if this wasn't for some personal revenge, this killer has killed before and/or since. LE just hasn't made the connection.

I agree this is a frightening case to me and no doubt to others because of the amount of planning that went into the crime and to me because I believe it was likely the targeting of a random stranger. To be in this respect it reminds me a little of the Dorothy Scott murder in California although this was a female victim with more stalking behaviour involved. Perhaps this is just me though. Of course if there was a personal motive it would be different but my feeling is that it was a random psychopath who enjoyed the planning of the crime and subsequent torture of the victim. If this is the case to do this to such a nice man as Al Kite shows he was totally devoid of a conscience and had absolutely no remorse about any of his crimes and the effects they had on his victims. Just my thoughts of course.

Hey everyone. I've written extensively about this case on another forum. On there, I laid out a pretty good case for Israel Keyes being the killer, although I'm very open to the idea that it was someone else, too. I can go into why I think Keyes may have been the culprit if you would like, but in the meantime I've attached an ATM photo of the Robert Cooper suspect. This is a lesser known photo. Most of us have seen the famous ATM photo that anyone can find online. But I had to dig for this one.
Call me crazy, but does this not look even more like Israel Keyes than the other one? The suspect looks pretty young in this one. Keyes was 26 when Al Kite was killed. Idk, you be the judge. Just thought I'd put this out there.

Thank you very interesting post with the second CCTV image. The only thing I would say is that witnesses described 'Robert Cooper' as being closer to fifty years old but Keyes was a killer.

Here are details of the suspect Robert Cooper from the FBI appeal. DNA phenotyping has been done in this case which suggests the offender may have been of Mediterranean descent. My view is that the offender had committed many crimes before likely in Colorado and was at the later stage of his criminal career and was therefore forensically aware and may have planted false leads at the scene. The offender actually left the victims mobile phone in an area frequented by homeless people. Here the suspect is described as being in his forties or fifties and people got a good at him but it might be Israel Keyes but I would say the crime was too sophisticated for him at this stage:

Jr. was discovered in the basement of his residence in Aurora, CO. Kite had been bound, beaten, tortured, and stabbed.
Kite’s wallet and cell phone were taken from the scene. An unidentified male attempted to use his debit card at an ATM following the murder. Surveillance video from the ATM shows a male wearing a ski mask driving Kite’s pickup truck, which was later recovered near Kite’s residence. Kite’s cell phone was discovered in a pay phone booth.
A male who rented a room from Kite prior to his murder is the primary suspect in this case. The renter, who identified himself as “Robert Cooper,” claimed to be from the East Coast and to work for Wells Fargo Bank. He provided false identification and contact information on his rental application. Witnesses generally described the suspect male as white, in his forties or fifties, 5’10”, 170 to 180 pounds, with black or brown hair. Witnesses reported that he walked with a limp and used a cane, and another reported that he spoke with a possible Romanian accent.

Of course one witness saw the offender without a limp and he just totally blanked her as if in a kind of trance. The offender in the CCTV also looks in good physical shape with powerful arms and a rather prominent nose form a side on angle.

One more post from me for now. It is interesting that the killer appeared to target a female at first who sensed there was something wrong with him but enjoyed committed this crime on a male. This is a scary crime like the Dorothy Scott crime in California and the offender appeared to be a dangerous psychopath who targeted strangers without conscience and enjoyed control and torture.

I’ve had this same conversation on another forum. Yes, the Cooper suspect was described as being in his 40s or 50s by some, but others had him in his 30s, too. We know he spent some time changing his appearance because everyone who saw him said he looked different.
From my understanding, Israel Keyes was known to be a man of many disguises. So that puts him at play here, in my opinion.
The other issue people bring up is height. Robert Cooper was described as being anywhere from 5’8”-5’10”. Keyes was 6’2”. While that seems like a big difference, I don’t think people are considering the idea that Keyes could’ve been altering his height. Some people are 2-3 inches shorter when they hunch, let alone walk with a limp and a cane. Plus, some people are just bad at approximating height. Maybe the witnesses were just off.

As I said interesting post and good CCTV image find. You may well be right but I just feel it is a Serial Killer the likes of the wicked Keynes would have liked to be some kind of evil apprentice too. Some one more experienced.

After an exhaustive investigation, without police resources of course, here are some reasons I believe it may have been Israel Keyes:
1) Al Kite was killed in May of 2004. Keyes was active as a serial killer at this time.
2) Keyes always traveled around the country to kill people. This Robert Cooper character had to have been from out of town. I doubt he’s from Aurora because he would run the risk of being recognized again by one of the people who saw him.
3) The University Of Colorado Library is where Robert Cooper responded to the ads Al Kite put in the paper. What would bring the killer to a university library? Well, Keyes was 26 (still relatively young) when the murder took place. His youth might’ve been what attracted him to the university. He would blend in because he looks young. If he were really in his 40s or 50s like the witnesses said, he could've possibly stood out and been remembered in an area with a lot of young people around, so I doubt he was actually 40-50 years old. This is where a disguise would come in.
4) Keyes was known to rob people he murdered, because he needed the money. That could very well be why Robert Cooper wanted Al Kite’s PIN number so bad, he just needed the money. Why else would a psycho path care about money so much? You'd think that would be such a secondary thing. But maybe he just wanted to be caught on camera because he knew it would play into his mind games with the police.
5) The ATM picture looks very similar to Keyes.
6) Israel Keyes would always bring his murder weapons and then stash them somewhere in the wilderness. Well to my knowledge, the 'torturing kit' that was discussed in a Denver Post article, was not recovered at the crime scene, meaning the killer had to have taken it with him. As everyone knows, Colorado has a lot of mountain area, so it is very possible the killer stashed the torturing kit near the mountains. I'm still not sure what a torturing kit is, and I'm also confused because I thought the killer killed Al using Al's kitchen knives. Where does a torturing kit come in?
7) The DNA composite they made for Robert Cooper. It looks like Israel Keyes!
8) Israel Keyes was known to be a man of many disguises, from what I understand. That fits the MO of this Robert Cooper guy because Cooper kept changing his appearance. Everyone who saw him said he looked different.

I think those are pretty good reasons to seriously consider Keyes the killer. I’d love to know if he was officially ruled out via DNA testing. That may be the case, which would explain why the detectives never seemed too interested in him.
Like I said in a previous post, I'm also open to the idea that it wasn't Keyes. It could've easily been someone else who has yet to be detected. Maybe he's reading this and laughing his *advertiser censored* off because he got off scott-free. But he better not get too comfortable because his DNA is in an international database, so all it's gonna take is for a distant relative of his to upload their DNA to a genealogy site, and "Robert Cooper" is gonna be in for the surprise of a lifetime.
But it's possible the killer left behind phony DNA. I've heard that theory tossed around. Who knows. Either way, these cases don't get forgotten about. I hope the killer is aware of that.

Here is a You Tube video about this case where the poster seems to have done a lot of research:

Other people might be right but I do not think Robert Cooper was Israel Keyes. In this video it mentions how his girlfriend got a look at him out of a window and she said he was in his forties and on the shorter side for a serial killer. Perhaps five feet six tall or maybe actually five feet eight tall in the light of day. Israel Keyes I think from memory was over six feet tall. The killer spent a great deal of time in the house and ate a meal and slept there. Interesting videos from the girls again and describes how the killer was forensically aware.

Interesting witness descriptions when he tried to rent out other rooms. Stating the obvious I think he was unfortunately in rather good health for a man of his age and did not need a cane or speak with a Romanian accent just a wild guess but I would go for a Virginian one.

Oh wow @jaejae, that was a really comprehensive video! There was information in there that I'd never heard before. I usually can't stand to watch videos (would much rather read) but this girl's delivery is really good and there was a ton of interesting content. Thanks for posting!

I too thought it was a really good video with a lot of good information and almost all that is known about the case as far as I know.

Yeah Keyes was at least 6'2", I think his drivers license said 6'2" but I've read that he may have been closer to 6'4".

I don't think Keyes did this either, although I don't rule it out entirely. The height is problematic but the biggest issue to me is if they have DNA from the crime scene, obviously Keyes has DNA on file so I'd think he would be an easy rule in/out.

The image of the guy at the atm does resemble Keyes though, and to me looks much taller than 5'8".
