Murder Suspect Dad Chris Watts Is in 'Mourning,' Source Claims: 'It's All Beginning to Sink In'

Now the gravity of the situation has hit the 33-year-old, maintains a second source, who spoke with Watts on Thursday. “It’s all beginning to sink in,” the source tells PEOPLE. “He’s in the mourning process.”

Chris now sits alone in an intake cell; according to the Weld County Jail, he is being held in protective custody due to the publicity surrounding his case. He is permitted to leave his cell under strict supervision for one hour of exercise and to shower — but it is unclear how often he has opted to do so.

“Obviously, he’s in a tough place,” says the source who spoke with him this week. “And he understands that he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.”

‘Everyone Liked Him’: Did Colorado Dad Chris Watts Lead a Double Life?

The alleged lover told The Daily Beast on Thursday that he believes he was the first man Chris ever slept with—and that their affair was Chris’ first during his marriage to Shanann. The men would see each other before or after work, or sometimes after 10 p.m., he claimed. He added that they’d usually meet at the man’s place and never at Chris’ home. The man believes Shanann was unaware of their rendezvous, which he claimed ended in spring of this year.

Investigators in Frederick, Colorado determined Chris was “actively involved in an affair” with a coworker, according to an arrest affidavit. The coworker hasn’t been identified, and the alleged gay lover says it’s not him.

The funeral for Shanann and her children, which was live streamed on Facebook, began on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with the playing of “Wing Beneath My Wings” before three coffins were wheeled into the church, accompanied by Shanann’s family and friends as a choir sang “Amazing Grace.”

““She was our pride and joy, a true gift from God,” Shanann’s father and mother, Frank Rzucek and Sandra Onorati Rzucek, wrote in her obituary. “We were so blessed to have such a joyful and wonderful daughter whose beauty was that of a doll.”“

"She was an amazing person," friend Amanda Thayer told ABC News of Shanann Watts. "She uplifted everyone around her. She listened to your thoughts, your concerns, your life. And never judged you. She gave you great advice."

"She pushed people to be successful," added her husband, Nick Thayer. "She just loved helping people succeed. People were drawn to her."

Three caskets were placed before the altar at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pinehurst, N.C. holding the bodies of Shanann Watts, 34, and her daughters Bella Marie, 4, and Celeste, 3.

“Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,” the Rev. John Forbes read in a short passage from the Gospel of Matthew.

Pallbearers brought the three caskets into the church; they were placed in front of the congregation. Many of the mourners wiped their eyes as the coffins entered the sanctuary.

The funeral started with a congregational singing of Amazing Grace, followed by Scripture readings and additional hymns. The 90-minute long ceremony contained no reference to Shan’ann’s husband, Chris Watts, who is accused of murdering his entire family.

When the funeral ended, pallbearers consisting of family members — including her father, brother and uncle — placed Shanann in a white hearse between the two carrying her daughters. And then Shanann and her children were taken to their final resting place.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for memorial donations to be made in Shanann Watts’ memory to the Lupus Foundation of America in Washington, D.C.; the Frederick Police Department’s missing persons division; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

"Shanann was a woman of love. She loved God, she loved her family and she loved her friends," the Rev. John Forbes said at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst.

Forbes also read from a letter from Shanann's brother, Frankie Rzucek, who wrote that she "was born to be a mother."

"Boy, was she ready," Rzucek's letter reads. "Closets were full even before she knew she was pregnant. She couldn't wait."
"She was very successful and independent before any man came along, and that's just the way she wanted it," Rzucek's letter said. "I always worried about her and the girls being so far because I couldn't protect them."

Shan'ann Watts Brother 'Always Worried About Her and the Girls' But 'Couldn't Protect Them'

From a young age, I always knew my sister was going to be successful — and nothing would stand in her way,” Rzucek’s statement read. “She was born to be a mother. Boy, was she ready! Closets were full even before she knew she was pregnant. She couldn’t wait. She was my mom, times ten — whether either one of them wanted to admit it. She had ambition in her eyes and wanted a great life for her children and herself.”

Rzucek went on to say that his sister excelled at motherhood. “They were always well-dressed and well mannered,” he wrote. “She taught them to be brave and independent, just like Shan’ann. She was very successful and independent, before any man came along — and that’s just the way she wanted it.”

Murdered Colorado Mom and 2 Daughters Laid to Rest

Shanann Watts will be remembered as a “woman of love” and her two young two daughters as being filled with life and joy, a priest said Saturday during a funeral service for the slain Colorado family found at an oil work site.

Forbes said Shanann Watts’ family would like to see good come from the tragedy, including a law to recognize the lives of unborn children such as their grandson.

“They do not desire vengeance and death, but justice and life,” Forbes said.

Shanann Watts' Family 'Wants Justice, Not Vengeance'

“She wanted to be an exceptional wife and mother. She wanted to support research into the disease that she had, lupus. She wanted to make a difference,” he said.

During his homily the priest also said that the family wants justice for Shanann and her kids, not vengeance, and that they want something good to come out of this tragedy. They want to see a law passed to recognize the lives of unborn children and they would like anyone who feels compelled to help financially to donate money to the Lupus Foundation, a missing persons search organization or St. Jude’s hospital.

Murder Suspect Dad Chris Watts Is in 'Mourning,' Source Claims: 'It's All Beginning to Sink In'

After Colorado father Chris Watts was arrested late on Aug. 15 for the murders of his pregnant wife and their young daughters, he was booked into the Weld County Jail — where he showed no emotion during the intake process, according to an investigative source at the time.

But that was more than two weeks ago.

Now the gravity of the situation has hit the 33-year-old, maintains a second source, who spoke with Watts on Thursday.

“It’s all beginning to sink in,” the source tells PEOPLE. “He’s in the mourning process.”

It’s a marked change in demeanor for Watts, who could face the death penalty if convicted.

'Still a Long Way to Go' in Watts Family Murders, Says Source: Dad Chris 'Had a Lot of Secrets'

Authorities are continuing to build a case against Chris Watts, the Colorado father accused of killing his 15-weeks-pregnant wife, Shan’ann Watts, and their two young daughters — and a source close to the investigation tells PEOPLE that it’s a lengthy process.

The source says one of the most daunting tasks is unraveling Chris’ many suspected lies, including the allegation that he had an ongoing affair with a co-worker at the time of the triple slayings in mid-August.

Using the same baby monitor as Watts have, AB demonstrates what can and cannot be seen and from what distance. The monitor is about the size of an iPhone7. Skin color is not recognizable with or without the lights on. CW could have heard what was happening in the room, but did not mention what he heard.
