Barry Morphew files for guardianship of missing wife Suzanne Morphew

June 5, 2020

CrimeOnline obtained documents from Hamilton Superior Court in Hamilton County, Indiana, showing that Barry Morphew filed a petition for guardianship of Suzanne Morphew on June 1.

The pending petition states that Suzanne Morphew “is deemed incapacitated under Indiana Law because she cannot be located upon reasonable inquiry.”

The document also states that Barry Morphew is requesting to sell real estate in Indiana on behalf of Suzanne, who is the joint owner of a property that is currently in contract and scheduled to close on June 6.

“The need exists for the appointment of a guardian of the alleged incapacitated person in that she cannot be located upon reasonable inquiry and property in Hamilton County, Indiana, needs to be sold,” the petition reads.

A member of Suzanne Morphew’s family who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that Barry and Suzanne owned multiple rental properties in Indiana, and said they recalled Suzanne saying that the couple was planning on selling at least one of them. The family member said they were unaware of Barry Morphew’s petition for guardianship when CrimeOnline asked them to comment on the matter.

The court documents show that Suzanne and Barry Morphew’s eldest daughter, who is an adult, provided consent for her father to be appointed guardianship of Suzanne.

CrimeOnline was unable to locate definitively established guidelines in Indiana for appointing guardianship of a missing person.

“It’s the wild west. There’s no uniformity,” Catherine Seal, a Colorado-based attorney with practice areas of guardianship and elder law, said of guardianship law in the U.S.

“Guardianship is the red-headed stepchild of the probate court,” Seal, a senior partner at Kirland & Seal, LLC, added.

James McGuire, a staff attorney at the Indiana Supreme Court, said that Indiana Supreme Court lawyers could not comment on the guardianship petition because the case is still pending, and could potentially proceed to the higher court. Several private practice attorneys based in Indiana declined to comment, and the attorney representing Barry Morphew in the petition for guardianship did not immediately respond to an interview request.

CrimeOnline will provide further updates when more information is available.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s office has encouraged members of the public who may have information related to Suzanne Morphew’s disappearance to call the dedicated tip line at 719-312-7530.

While there aren't any new developments to announce as of now, the CBI spokeswoman acknowledged it's been a while since the sheriff's office shared a news release. She said she'd reach out today to see if they would do that. We'll keep an eye out. #SuzanneMorphew

Teal and yellow ribbons raise awareness for Suzanne Morphew

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. — It’s been a month since a Chaffee County mother vanished after reportedly going on a bike ride on Mother’s Day. ]..]

A group of women from Salida is encouraging the community to continue to keep Suzanne and her family in their thoughts. Hanna Shea hopes people can rally together by hanging a ribbon, placing a candle, and spreading the word.

“Pretty much every business in town you walk by has the missing person flyer,” Shea explained. “I think everyone now knows what she looks like and her face is all over town, it’s been on social media.”

For 30 days, Morphew hasn’t returned to her Maysville home, and her two daughters have been without their mother. [..]

Despite the pandemic, a group of women is putting up ribbons to honor Morphew and to raise awareness of her disappearance.

“What we had learned from her hometown (Alexandria, Indiana) that they chose yellow and teal, yellow for bringing her home and teal because that is the color of her bike helmet,” Shea said.

The women organizing the ribbons in Salida don’t know Morphew personally but said it’s about support for her family and friends.

After 1 month and few updates, CBI says ‘a high level of commitment’ remains in Suzanne Morphew case
After 1 month and few updates, CBI says ‘a high level of commitment’ remains in Suzanne Morphew case
CBI says this remains a missing persons case
SNIPPED
CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. — In the month since Suzanne Morphew was reported missing from Chaffee County, the case has gone from national headlines to a few small, local updates every few days. But that hardly means the investigation has diminished.

Wednesday marks one month since Morphew, 49, was reported missing after she left for a bike ride and never returned. The case’s momentum carried into the following couple weeks, but there have been few updates regarding the investigation since late May.

Susan Medina with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said there’s a reason for that.

“There hasn’t been any real new information to relay in the case other than investigators are working,” she said Wednesday morning.

This case remains a high priority for the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and CBI, she said.

“Our agents are working closely with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI has a team as well assigned to this. Committed — there’s a high level of commitment to this case,” she said. “You may not see a news release on a daily basis but that doesn’t mean that extensive work isn’t happening on a daily basis. … Countless hours every day by agents and analysts and investigators to determine where Suzanne is and what happened.”

PRESS RELEASE
June 10, 2020

SUZANNE MORPHEW UPDATE JUNE 10

It has been one month since Suzanne Morphew was reported missing in Chaffee County. In that time, local, state and federal investigators have followed-up on hundreds of tips and conducted a number of searches in an effort to locate Ms. Morphew, who was reported missing on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in this missing person case.

In addition to countless interviews conducted in the last month, approximately 500 tips have been called into a designated tip line in the investigation, along with 10 large-scale searches performed throughout the county.

On June 10, investigators plan to conduct a community canvas in the county to contact residents and others to not only share information about Ms. Morphew’s disappearance, but also focus on obtaining any new information in her case. Nearly two dozen members of law enforcement will take part in this comprehensive effort on Wednesday.

The public is asked to continue to report any information about this case by calling (719) 312-7530.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office will release information related to the investigation as it becomes available.
