Finding Suzanne Morphew: Investigators Search Husband's Job Site Near Salida

May 22, 2020

SALIDA, Colo. (CBS4) — A residential construction site is now the focus of the search for Suzanne Morphew, a Colorado woman who was reported missing from her Chaffee County home on Mother’s Day. The property owner confirmed to CBS4’s Rick Sallinger that Suzanne’s husband was hired to lay dirt on the riverfront land, located east of Salida.

The owner of the property told CBS4’s Rick Sallinger that he has known Barry Morphew for three weeks. The river front property was undergoing improvement. Concrete was laid over the dirt.

The property owner has told others that investigators have been using an x-ray type device to try to see through the concrete.

‘Pacing around, staring out windows’: Chaffee County Fire Chief addresses questions about missing Suzanne Morphew’s husband Barry Morphew

by Ellen Killoran
May 21, 2020

[..]

Many of the questions circulating on social media and elsewhere have focused on Suzanne’s husband Barry Morphew, who is believed to have been out of the area on May 10, which was Mother’s Day. Morphew is a volunteer firefighter in Chaffee County, and owned a landscaping business in Indiana before the family moved to Colorado about two years ago. The Morphews have two daughters, who are believed to be high school and college-aged.

Relatives told CBS4 that Barry Morphew had been in Denver, about 150 miles from Maysville, on the day his wife disappeared; reportedly for some type of training believed to be connected to his work as a firefighter.

CrimeOnline reached Chaffee County Fire Chief Robert Bertram, who confirmed that Barry Morphew is one of about 40 volunteer firefighters in the county. Asked if he had any information about a possible training that Morphew had attended on May 10, Bertram said it was the first he’d heard of it.

“Due to [the coronavirus pandemic], our firefighters have not been attending any trainings sponsored by us,” Bertram said, adding that sometimes firefighters will pay for training courses on their own. The fire chief said he had heard, rather, that Morphew had been working a landscaping job in Denver on May 10.

Bertram said he believed that Barry Morphew continued to work independently as a landscaper in Colorado after he moved from Indiana, and said there is high demand for construction work in the area. Bertram also said he has never known Morphew to be dishonest.

“[Barry] and his wife are honest and friendly,” Betram said. “If Barry Morphew tells you something, you can believe it.”

The fire chief has not had direct contact with Barry Morphew since Suzanne disappeared, but has spoken to firefighters who have. He said that Barry is staying with a friend in the area, “pacing around, staring out windows,” hoping for information about his wife. The friend is not a member of the fire department, Bertram said, though some Chaffee County firefighters have seen Barry at the friend’s home since the investigation began.

Bertram went on to say that Suzanne and Barry were both well-respected members of the community, and active in their church. He said Suzanne was known to go for a bike ride on Sunday mornings before church, and said he did not believe she attended church on May 10, though he could not be certain.

Bertram also noted that the fire department is not working with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s office or state and federal authorities on the search for Suzanne Morphew, but said that some firefighters had been volunteering their time to search for the missing woman. He acknowledged a possible disconnect between Morphew’s friends and family and the law enforcement officers conducting the investigation.

Investigators search Salida property in connection with Suzanne Morphew disappearance, Fire Chief remains “hopeful”
May 22, 2020

Morphew, 49, was reported missing on May 10 after she didn’t return home from a bike ride. A family member told FOX21 News her bike had been recovered, but the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office would only confirm they had found “a personal item” they believe belongs to Morphew.

Barry Morphew, Suzanne’s husband, volunteers with Chaffee County Fire and Rescue.

FOX21 News spoke to his boss, Chief Robert Bertram, who described the missing woman as well-liked.

“She was one of the most friendly people I’ve ever met,” Bertram said. ” Very genuine, she would come up and talk to you. It definitely hit hard when I heard that she was missing.”

Bertram told FOX21 News he recruited Barry Morphew in 2018 to become a volunteer firefighter.

He noted that there were no emergency calls during the weekend Suzanne went missing, and no planned training.

Bertram explained it’s not uncommon for people to go missing in the Salida area, citing difficult terrain and a number of 14ers. Still, he noted, those people are usually unfamiliar with the county, and not locals.

He described the process of those searches.

“[For] a typical missing person, a deputy is notified and assigned to it,” he explained. “They go up to locate their vehicle and call out search and rescue teams, but this was different.”

Bertram said firefighters out of the Maysville Fire Station, who work closely with Barry, have helped the family search for the missing woman. However, he clarified, investigators did not ask the department to help search.

“The last report I got from people is that [Barry] is having a difficult time sitting still, and pacing back and forth, constantly looking out the window, hoping he can see her” Bertram said. “He’s going out, driving up the road, and trying to remember any suspicious vehicles that he’s seen.”

He said Barry hasn’t gone on a call for the fire department since his wife disappeared.

Other than that, Bertram said, he doesn’t know much about the investigation.

“The initial report that I got when they told me on Monday is that she is missing and they found her bike in a ravine,” he said. “That’s all the information I have gotten.”

And, although concern for Suzanne Morphew grows with each day, Bertram said his department has faith search efforts will be successful.

“All of our firefighters still remain hopeful that she is out there and somebody will see her,” he said.

Chaffee County Sheriff's Office, CBI, FBI now investigating disappearance of Maysville area woman

Don’t think I’ve seen this one posted before. There’s much more in the article:

“Trevor Noel, Morphew's nephew who also lives in Colorado, spoke with Denver7 Thursday morning. He said a family friend matched Morphew husband's offer of a reward of $100,000, bringing the total reward to $200,000 for her safe return, no questions asked.

He encouraged anybody who wants to help to share Morphew's story and picture, the "Find Suzanne Morphew" Facebook page, the page and tip line (719-312-7530) with friends and family.

The https://www..com/f/b3w3h-please-help-us-find-suzanne-and-get-her-home-safe is raising money to support search and rescue efforts in the form of meals, lodging and equipment, Noel said. He created the page. As of Thursday morning, almost 150 people had raised close to $20,000.

"We have a lot of people out here working and taking care of everything so were trying to cover all their expenses and make sure they’re well taken care of and that we have everything we need to be well-equipped to go out and find her," he said.

He said people who live out of town can share the links with their contact lists.

"Share the link to the Facebook page and share the tip line number and share the ," he said. "And it’s a $200,000 reward, no questions asked. Bring her here. Bring her to us. Give her up. And it’s $200,000."

When asked if he had reason to believe there was foul play, Sheriff Spezze said, "I can't answer that. We are searching and investigating."

Nearby residents said they were heartened to hear that a tip line was being set up.

"It's just very concerning," said Jennifer Caskey, a resident of the Monarch Spur RV Park. "We do have a lot of wildlife in the area, so it's concerning that she's been gone for so long now, but we're praying."

Her husband, Lynn, said the mountain trails seem like they're pretty safe, so it just makes me wonder about the wildlife.

One new resident, Serena Bridge, said she'd been "a little freaked out about the COVID pandemic" and is even more concerned now that a local woman is missing.

Many residents in the RV park said they're willing to volunteer for a search, if needed.”

Friday would be the two-month mark since #SuzanneMorphew went missing from Chaffee County. As of now, this remains a missing persons case and has never been a homicide case. Previous story on why little info has been released to the public: https://bit.ly/3cPtH0i

Here’s what the FBI told me regarding this question: This is a local investigation, not a federal one, so #SuzanneMorphew is not listed on FBI's missing persons page (even though FBI is assisting). The FBI will only post a missing person if requested by local authorities. (1/3)

2/3) As of now, local authorities have not requested to have #SuzanneMorphew put on the FBI’s missing persons list. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. The FBI says there’s no specific reasoning why or malicious intent behind this — it’s an administrative thing.

3/3) According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, #SuzanneMorphew remains a missing person in Colorado and other national databases.
