New documents obtained by The Denver Post quote Texas law enforcement officials saying what Colorado authorities still will not: the assassination of prisons director Tom Clements was orchestrated by a white supremacist prison gang.

The Texas documents, obtained through an open-records request, reveal a spiderweb of phone calls between gunman Evan Ebel and fellow members of the 211 Crew in the days before and after Clements' killing on March 19, 2013. Some of those calls came two days later while Ebel was leading Texas lawmen on a 100 mph chase that led to a crash and, ultimately, his death in a shootout...

The arrests stemmed from the gang members' dealings with Ebel, but none was directly linked to Clements' killing, which remains officially unsolved more than three years later.

Three years after the slaying of Colorado’s top prison official, El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder is pulling the plug on the investigation, saying he doesn’t have evidence to dispute that gunman Evan Ebel acted alone.

(...)

“If probable cause existed for the arrest and prosecution of anyone, we would pursue that and the DA’s Office would be right behind us,” Elder said.

The Sheriff’s Office is notifying fellow investigative agencies that it will take the case off “active” status, Elder said.

He said a development is expected that could change people’s perceptions of the investigation, but wouldn’t elaborate.

The investigation into the 2013 assassination of state prisons chief Tom Clements — which the El Paso County sheriff recently told fellow law enforcement officials was being closed — will continue for now.

A spokeswoman for Gov. John Hickenlooper said Wednesday the investigation continues.

“We are just beginning to review and understand the scope of the investigation,” Kathy Green said after an extraordinary meeting in Denver between Hickenlooper, El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder, state Attorney General Cynthia Coffman and other officials.

Whoa. I haven't been keeping up with this one. Thank y'all for doing so. :)

I am not buying the bit about Clements being targeted because of conditions in his prison. He was a reformer who was working to reduce the amount of solitary time these guys had to serve. The whole tape recording of the pizza guy is just so suspect. This was a hit alright. There is that strange " coincidence" of gov. Hickenlooper and ebels dad knowing each other. Unfortunately with Ebel dead i would not hold my breath on this one.

Six members of a violent, white supremacist prison gang and a female gang associate were arrested on outstanding arrest warrants by FBI agents and SWAT officers from several Front Range police agencies on Wednesday.

During the coordinated sweep from Denver to Greeley, authorities also confiscated guns and methamphetamine from the suspects.

Agents from the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force and SWAT team members from Denver, Westminster and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department fanned out Wednesday to make the arrests in Denver, Adams County, Jefferson County, Weld County and Greeley.

FBI spokeswoman Deborah Sherman confirmed that FBI agents participated in an area-wide operation in which seven people were arrested on state drugs and weapons charges.

Members of the 211 Crew have been tied to the murder of former Colorado prisons chief Tom Clements. Sherman declined to comment about whether the investigation pertained in any way to the Clements case.

Given no reason to talk, nobody talks.

Given a reason, someone will eventually talk.

It took years for some ABT murders in Texas to be prosecuted. When they were, the federal hammer came down hard and heavy.

And often.

With aggressive, persistent, and cooperative multi-jurisdictional investigations, even some high-ranking ABT members found the motivation to talk about past murders and assaults.

Perhaps the model that has been (and still is) relatively effective in Texas (and lately Mississippi!) can work in Colorado to uncover more about the murder of Tom Clements and lead to future prosecutions, whether they be state or federal.

I don't track Colorado prison gang crime, so I don't know if these arrests are simply business as usual or if they signify a more aggressive approach.

Hopefully the latter if something is going to give in the Clements investigation.
