If BPD or APD or NPD aren't mental illness then I don't know what is. Believe me, I lived 20 yrs with someone BPD. As long as he took his meds he was okay as soon as he felt "well" and stopped it was clear he was mentally ill

So sorry to hear that Angelonline. Those 20 years of "walking on eggshells" must've been awful. I hope things are better for you now. I have a lot of empathy for the family's and loved ones of the mentally ill.

Thank you, I'll speak with you, Autism/Aspergers is not a mental illness, it is a neurological disorder of the brain ..........

I have a friend whose son has autism- and my mother befreinded a kid at her church who has Aspergers.... that kid grew up, graduated High school and joined the army, he is now in Afghanistan- so if Aspergers is a mental illness the US Army is letting them fight on the front lines..

So the idea that his guy had Aspergers and committed this horror baffled me yesterday. Premeditated violence is just not something I've ever seen with Autism/Aspergers.

in speaking of the available places to hide in a classroom full of children in such a horror of all horrors situation that descended upon this elementary school yesterday morning, I cant help but go back to 27yo Vicki Soto and once again commend her FOR THE VERY REAL HERO THAT SHE IS beyond compare..and I mean that literally..because what this young woman chose to do in that split second when the ultimate push came to shove and she was left with mere milliseconds to think and very, very few, scarce choices of which to choose from..

I'm crying again as I type this post but I just cannot convey to people what type of miracle happened in this young teachers school room yesterday and its something I will never forget and truly can you only imagine the parents of those six/seven year olds that are alive and well and home right now in their beds tucked tight away.. THAT IS ONLY BECAUSE OF VICKI SOTO! SHE SAVED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE TINY, LITTLE PRECIOUS SOULS YESTERDAY..

She made that split second decision and there was no turning back from that point.. she quickly and quietly ushered every single one of those precious little kids into cabinets and closets at the back of the classroom....she told them to sit tight and don't make a sound no matter what happens or what you hear..

moments later he entered Vicki Soto's classroom and he was there with one intention and that was quite simply to kill every single one of her tiny little students.. wanting to know where her class full of students were SHE QUICKLY TOLD THIS COLD BLOODED KILLER THAT HER ENTIRE CLASS WAS IN THE GYM FOR P.E.!!

And with that he killed her..

But yet Not a single solitary hair on any of those children's entire heads was harmed..and right now, at this moment while so very many other parents are in the excruciating pain of a lifetime of having lost in death their small and helpless child yesterday when that coward entered their classrooms... but these parents..the parents of Vicki Soto's class were spared..their children so very easily could have been THE ONES..they were intended to be THE ONES..

AND IT IS ONLY BECAUSE OF YOUNG, BRIGHT AND BUBBLY TEACHER MS. VICKI SOTO AND HER SPLIT SECOND CHOICE SHE MADE IN THE BLINK IF AN EYE YESYERDAY..THO, SHE'D NEVER HAVE KNOWN IT WOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT, LITERALLY LIFE ALTERING FOR SO MANY..THAT CHOICE SHE MADE IN THAT MOMENT WAS WHAT SAVED THE LIVES OF THESE INNOCENT CHILDREN..

AND IM CERTAIN AS I SIT HERE CRYING THAT THOSE FAMILIES OF THOSE CHILDREN THAT VICKI SOTO VERY LITERALLY SAVED THEIR LIVES ..THAT THERE WILL NEVER EVER BE A DAY THAT GOES BY WHERE THEY DONT THINK OF AND THANK THE LORD FOR VICKI SOTO AND THAT CHOICE THAT SHE MADE WHEN PUSH CAME TO SHOVE AND IT TRULY MATTERED THE VERY MOST IN SAVING HER LITTLE, PRECIOUS STUDENTS LIVES..EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM.

eta: mrsu linked down thread that several of the students did come out and attempted to flee and he shot them as they ran..this hurts my heart to know, but of course makes this young woman no less of the hero she is.. I'm just so broken by what he has done and I can't quite even begin to comprehend what these families are experiencing...again thanks mrsu for clarifying.

Copy/Pasted: From The Daily Nugget: The Bad and the Ugly:

The Ugly: the closing of mental health hospitals in California and across the United States. Is it any wonder that California seems to have all of the crazy homeless people? State mental hospitals were taken away by Governor Reagan in the seventies, and federal mental health programs were later taken away by President Reagan in the eighties.

When Ronald Reagan was governor of California he systematically began closing down mental hospitals, later as president he would cut aid for federally-funded community mental health programs. It is not a coincidence that the homeless populations in the state of California grew in the seventies and eighties. The people were put out on the street when mental hospitals started to close all over the state.

Seeing an increase in crime, and brutal murders by Herb Mullin, a mental hospital patient, the state legislature passed a law that would stop Reagan from closing even more state-funded mental health hospitals. But Reagan would not be outdone. In 1980, congress proposed new legislation (PL 96-398) called the community mental health systems act (crafted by Ted Kennedy), but the program was killed by newly-elected President Ronald Reagan. This action ended the federal community mental health centers (see timeline on this link) program and its funding.

In closing, the next time you pass by a homeless person in downtown San Francisco screaming to themselves at the top of their lungs, remember Reagan. And if your kids need to go out and get jobs at age 9 to pay down the national debt, be sure to tell them that they can thank Ronald Reagan, and now President Bush, for their misfortune

So, then this would lead some to believe that shutting down mental health facilities has more to do with violence in California than guns do.

Not everyone with Aspergers is exactly the same, they can be very different. Some can be severe, some mild, some violent, some not. It is different in every person diagnosed with it. Some grow up to be very successful individuals, while others do not. The same with autism and most other mental disorders.

I have heard that if you are diagnosed after the age of 18 to join the army you need to get a mental health waiver. That is awesome that this kid didn't let his aspergers stop him from doing things in life.

Its a little "greek" to me too - I do know that cod is Call of Duty. But notice the post times - he just posted these reviews Dec. 12 - that's just 2 days before. 3 of them are back to back - timewise and the last one was 5 hours later.

indie devs is referring to the developer/writer of the game.

CS GO is Counterstrike: Global Offensive

Hopefully after I can get DS to look at these we can tell more.

Thankx!

I agree completely that she was a hero. All of the teachers were IMO, but there are conflicting reports on what happened. There are articles saying that 6 of her students were killed and they found 7 still hiding in closets sometime later. There was also parents of one of the safe children speaking on the news and she said she would never understand completely how her son's life was spared while others were shot. So not that it makes a difference, but I do not believe all the students in her classroom were unharmed.

Here is a link to one article: http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-timeline-newtown-shooting-1216-20121215,0,1878564.story
Lanza next arrived at teacher Victoria Soto's classroom. Soto is believed to have hidden her 6- and 7-year old students in a classroom closet. When Lanza demanded to know where the children were, Soto tried to divert him to the other end of the school by saying that her students were in the auditorium.

But six of Soto's students tried to flee. Lanza shot them, Soto and another teacher who was in the room. Later, in their search for survivors, police found the remaining seven of Soto's students still hiding in the closet. They told the police what had happened.

The two teacher's aides who were killed were Mary Anne Murphy and Rachel Davino. It was unclear which aide was in which room when they were killed.

The first officer to arrive at the school found Lanza's body near the door of Soto's classroom.

So, then this would lead some to believe that shutting down mental health facilities has more to do with violence in California than guns do.

I'm not sure if I think the article is saying that---I'm just answering MysteryGirl's question about who wanted institutions shut down (Reagan). Personally, I think the violence in America has it's roots in many causes.

I feel America is still the "wild west" (except we have iPhones now). (:

OH NO! I DID NOT KNIW THAT SOME OF THEM TRIED TO FLEEE.. THAT JUST HURTS ME ..AND YES, IT MAKES HER NO LESS OF A HERO..

Thanks for posting that as I'd been tweeted several tweets this morning telling the story and obviously it was before more details were released...oh makes me heart hurt for those little ones as they tried to run for their lives..it just hurts me..

thanks for clarifying for me.

I absolutely agree she is a HERO. But we need to keep the facts straight.

Lanza next arrived at teacher Victoria Soto's classroom. Soto is believed to have hidden her 6- and 7-year old students in a classroom closet. When Lanza demanded to know where the children were, Soto tried to divert him to the other end of the school by saying that her students were in the auditorium.

What parent doesn't make mistakes?

How many parents with troubled sons who have never exhibited violent behavior--which as far as we know from media reports the killer didn't until Friday--keep guns in the house?

How many parents out there are in denial over the extent of their children's issues?

Whatever mistakes she made, she paid the ultimate price for.

And until I see evidence that she had any reason to think he would commit this sort of act and didn't do anything to prevent it, including securing her guns appropriately, I am not willing to blame her for anything.

We don't know how difficult it was for Nancy to "handle" her son.
Some here say her friends said she was in denial...Maybe that's true..You know, maybe she let her guard down too often. Because her son may have shown periods of clarity and normal behavior and this is the trap parents, families will fall into.

Maybe AL was on medications. Maybe AL jumped on and jumped off taking his meds if he took them at all...and this is extremely dangerous for someone with a mental illness because experts told our family this will short circuit their brain chemistry/wiring and sets them really far back from becoming stabilized

Sometimes we have to accept some people are just not that strong and want to exhale once in awhile, feeling the storm is over...Maybe this is what happened to Nancy?

I don't know, none of us know all of the facts right now...

I believe some students did manage to flee. This morning I saw parents of one students giving interviews. Their son did flee after teacher was shot, and he made it out with some of his friends.

VERY interesting. Interview with ALs aunt also.

"His older brother told authorities Lanza had a history of mental problems, but the nature of them was not clear"

BBM - again... we do not know what those alleged "mental problems" consisted of or even whether or not he was truly autistic or an aspie.

I recall one report that tried to put a "diagnosis" with the "reported" scoop from his brother indicating AL had OCD (not a personality disorder) which may or may not have been meant to be OCPD (a personality disorder).

I will again state AFAIK we have not seen any direct quotes made by his brother confirming or even clarifying that information... in fact - short of his direct quotes made on his own FB page telling people he was at work and it wasn't him I'm pretty sure there have not been any publicized quotes by him after that.

Geraldo Rivera was behind a lot of that decision.

Rivera wanted the world to know how horrible these people were being treated ,he did not say close them down and throw them into the street.

In the seventies Geraldo Rivera was my hero for exposing how horrendous mental patients were treated. My mom was manic depressive and told me horror stories of what was done to her and what I saw with my own 2 eyes as a very young child.Of course that was before Casey Anthony and Jose Baez. Now I hate him.

Willowbrook State School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

early 1972, Geraldo Rivera, then an investigative reporter for WABC-TV in New York, conducted a series of investigations at Willowbrook uncovering a host of deplorable conditions, including overcrowding, inadequate sanitary facilities, and physical and sexual abuse of residents by members of the school's staff. The exposé, entitled Willowbrook: The Last Disgrace, garnered national attention and won a Peabody Award for Rivera.[6] Rivera later appeared on the nationally televised Dick Cavett Show with film of patients at the

Of course each case is different, what I was saying is that Autism and Aspergers are NOT mental illnesses.
It cannot be caused by trauma or neglect and it can not be treated with therapy or change in lifestyle or attitude.

People with Aspergers can develop mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression but it isn't part of the disorder.
