60% would be 120 proof, would have to be strong stuff, maybe some Bacardi 151? Not sure if pharmacies sell denatured ethyl alcohol, might be worth checking.

running machine empty with some bleach is what I read, probably on hot. Mine has Tub Clean cycle that uses steam.

So we need 120 proof and that's actually not easy to find?

I'll look into running the machine on empty. Thanks.

They've tested positive, but I don't see any mention of symptoms.

So this is DEVASTATING to the travel industry.

You can so easily and unknowingly catch the virus that it will show up in your own body cavities ( nasal or throat).

I think this is time for people at high-risk for moderate or severe infection ( older age group, which I thought was 40+), immunosuppressed ( which could be through disease, treatment, or medications) or at other high risk to AVOID TRAVEL and AVOID LARGE GROUPS

I don't mean to sound alarmist, but self-quarantine in these higher risk groups should be considered, and for longer than 14 days, I think. I'd consider 28 days to be a self-quarantine goal.

But as each week brings more virus into your world from colonized or infected travelers returning from areas with disease, the quarantine clock has to re-start.

I have a great concern about how our older folks, with limited or fixed incomes, and limited mobility will be able to have enough supplies for self-quarantine. They can hardly pay the electric bills !

IMHO, OOO

I haven’t watched this yet but just want to say again that sorry but anyone who chooses to cruise right now (or travel to affected areas) needs to reallly think about the potential consequences which could include facing quarantine or hospitalization in a foreign country, lack of being repatriated in a timely manner, etc etc. If I comment further it will sound harsh so shutting my mouth before I say something offensive.
I'm forwarding this to both of my stepsons and their families...who have cruises planned in a few months. DH and I cancelled ours, but they either haven't gotten the memo...or aren't concerned. Yet, I hope. Not a good idea - I agree with you! Message needs to be harsh sometimes to make people really think! JMO

Kenya court orders all passengers on flight from China quarantined

Kenya High Court has ordered all 239 passengers who arrived in Nairobi on a flight from Guangzhou, China, Wednesday, to be quarantined.

The passengers will be quarantined at a Kenya Defense Forces facility or another guarded medical facility.

The court ruling, which states that all passengers from China Southern Arline’s flight CZ 6043 are to be traced, accounted for, re-examined and quarantined until “they are duly certified to be free from Coronavirus (COVID-19)."

Allen Gichuhi, President of the Kenya Law Society, jointly, and successfully, petitioned the country’s high court today to suspend all non-essential flights from China to Kenya.

Interesting how dynamic this situation is, and fluid. Information is changing so quickly.

Last week, at work, it was "business as usual".

This week, we were issued gloves, hand sanitizer, face masks. The website is updated daily. And procedures that are normally inflexible, all of the sudden, umm, yeah, well, if you are sick, we can totally reschedule your appointment. (Hello, where I work, it usually takes an act of God to reschedule an appointment!).

I don’t know how easy it is to find at liquor store honestly. Most strong spirits (vodka, tequila, etc..are 80 proof). Bacardi 151 should be strong enough, everclear, you can dilute them down to 60% to make them milder, I haven’t made a punch since college days so I don’t know what’s out there for strong stuff. I’m not sure if Isopropyl work, that’s rubbing alcohol that’s usually available.

Quick search shows Isopropyl used in homemade stuff.
I don’t know if you need to keep the % or alcohol at 60-70 after mixing. If you dilute a 60% alcohol with aloe Vera you decrease the % of alcohol. If it needs to be 60% after dilution then you would need stronger alcohol.

I will be that person who gets it and shows no symptoms and just gives it to everyone else. I don’t see how only more susceptible people staying in would help. Us healthy folks are just going to bring it to them. MOO

A person who recently travelled to Iran has become the first confirmed case of coronavirus in New Zealand.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed the news speaking to media in Sydney today.

The person is aged in their 60s and arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday on Emirates flight EK450 from Tehran, via Bali. “The person arrived in Auckland on 26 February and travelled home in a private car,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Health said.

16% of US beer drinkers confused as to whether Corona beer connected to coronavirus, survey says

The firm reports that 16 percent of beer drinking Americans were confused about whether Corona beer is related to the coronavirus, and 38 percent of Americans would not buy Corona beer "under any circumstances."

The firm also reported that only 4 percent of people who usually drink Corona would stop drinking the beer entirely, but 14 percent said they would stop drinking the beer in a public setting.

The findings are the result of a phone survey with 737 Americans, which was conducted earlier this week.

lol - That’s insane!!

Just think what would happen to their sales volume if a rumor stated that it was the vaccine!!

It’s a crazy world out there...

I witnessed panic buying here in Scotland for the first time today. People were desperately trying to find face masks and hand sanitizer in my two local chemists. Nobody had any in stock.

At the moment I’m not starting to panic yet as there are no confirmed cases in Scotland. I have no plans to travel and I’m being very careful as my immune system is suppressed due to my Crohn’s disease.

However, I am very concerned about all the people and animals who are being affected by this crisis around the world and hope and pray things start improving very soon. I understand entirely why people are so worried and why they are stocking up should they have to isolate themselves.

I've been checking the supermarkets' websites (Tesco and Sainsbury's mostly) and they did seem to sell out completely of hand sanitizers for a little while, and now they seem to be having a couple available at a time, so you just have to keep looking.

I was very lucky that our little village shop had some in...higher price than the supermarket's, but at the time I couldn't see any in the supermarkets' websites nor on Amazon so I picked one up just in case. I do like to carry one in my bag when I'm out.

On the Dr John Campbell videos he's been saying that he doesn't think masks are very helpful other than as reminders to not touch your face. I think they can be helpful if someone's showing symptoms in the home and has a high chance of having Covid-19, especially if they're coughing and they have to have another person in the same room as them for a while.

Amazon doesn't seem to have had masks in for weeks, even the paper ones, other than from marketplace sellers who appear to be putting high markups on the items and the few people who are spending out on them are giving bad reviews. I saw a headline today that Amazon have removed hundreds of products from their site that were claiming to be a cure for coronavirus, and maybe also price gouging? The few marketplace sellers with hand sanitizer on there that I looked were charging about £5 including p+p for a hand sanitizer that costs £1 at a supermarket (when it's in stock)! So there's no way I'm paying the prices for masks from there. From what I can tell those marketplace sellers are not 'good' sellers but opportunists and I think some are charging £20-£50 for a box of masks that would normally retail for £5.

So I didn't think to look for them until it was too late. There's not exactly over-enthusiasm from the medical community for people wearing them in public, they seem to think handwashing and not touching the face is more important/useful.

In some countries they've been mandating the wearing of masks when going out in public when a town is in lockdown. But if they were going to do that here in the UK, I think they'd have to have an official place to get hold of masks. And I think the main priority will be keeping masks for doctors/nurses, etc who are actually in close contact with patients and really have the greater need for them.

I would also have thought that most places that are producing masks would have already been contacted by governments/health organizations and been paid to produce solely for them until they have what they feel is a sufficient amount for a potential large outbreak. I mean, to me, it's a waste of a mask for me to wear one around my village where there probably aren't even any cases, but doctors and nurses *have* to be in close contact with sick people every day, and they don't know if the next patient through the door might have Covid-19...so they need to protect themselves and their patients. And when they wear masks in operating theatres, surgeons and nurses wear the masks to protect the patient, not the other way around.

Another idea (as long as you're not a smoker or near an open flame (gas cooker or candle) to put some surgical spirit on a tissue and put a few of those in a ziplock bag to use as hand wipes when you're out. But on the other hand most of the supermarkets still seem to have stocks of branded antibac wipes in resealable packs that you can carry around when you're outside.

I suddenly thought of an old friend of ours who visited from Hawaii and stayed with his Mom in an assisted living facility in our small town recently (in early February while we were just starting to learn about COVID-19). He works closely with the public at a large resort hotel on one of the popular Hawaiian islands. We were with him a couple of times in large groups (75-100 people) and I gave him a hug. He had contact with other friends of ours in small groups. Near the end of his two week visit, he developed a sore throat. Two days later he flew back to Hawaii.

I will be calling his Mom to see how he is and even more importantly how she is. It’s probably just a cold, and I hate to be an alarmist, but since he was in contact with international visitors at his job before he came here, my alarm bells went off. This is how this stuff innocently spreads.

More Random Musings:

I was thinking about the other day how in other threads, we are of course always concerned and often emotionally affected by the cases we follow here re: child murders, etc, but often these threads are ones that realistically do not directly affect us as far as knowing the victim, being in the community, etc.

However, with this thread here, this IS one that could personally affect affect each and every one of us directly, not necessarily in terms of infection per say, but everything that goes a long with it, whether it’s stocking up, cancelling travel plans, etc.

My point is that this thread is like no others. It is, as I’ve said many times, multidimensional and infinite...

<respectfully snipped>

This is one of the reasons that I would like to have a public poll on this site. If the poll is linked on WS Facebook, Twitter, and/or elsewhere, we will garner non-member participation and possibly recruit new members who are interested in fact-baed discussion of COVID-19.

OT: I just returned from a physical therapy evaluation (bursitis in right hip). They are asking new patients about recent international travel in the last month and symptoms of illness. I mentioned my January cruise during which we visited Eleuthera (Bahamas), St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. Another new patient who arrived shortly before me was being quizzed about her cold symptoms. I chatted cordially with her until a PT called for her, but I made sure that I sat some distance from her in the waiting area ;)

ETA: I've already made some notes concerning future PT visits. I had only a cursory look around the gym facility and hope there are plenty of disinfecting wipes for any/all equipment I'll be using. I will also take my own disposable surgical gloves and wear them when I'm using machines that are handled by many other patients.

Isopropyl (also known as “rubbing alcohol”) will work according to my research online. As will Ethyl alcohol. Most pharmacies near me have both options.

OMG be very careful with mixing bottles of consumable alcohol with denatured alcohol or other stuff.

First of all, do not use a liquor bottle for the mix. You don't want anyone who comes across this stuff to accidentally drink denatured alcohol because of the optic, liver, and renal toxicity that can kill or blind.

Isopropanol, or dentatured alcohol have methanol added and it is a POISON.

Throw away the liquor bottle. Use a different bottle and label it as POISON. Because it is.

Or better yet. Don't play amateur chemist and buy consumable alcohol as a disinfectant.

Arrrrgggh. We don't need people in ICU intubated with both COVID-19 infection and methanol poisoning.
