I heard some newscaster today say something about the heat minimizing the virus - I am almost screaming at the TV- I was in Florida for the winter plus two months and I can tell you the heat does not stop COVID or minimize it and anyone that says differently is full of it. It has been really hot and humid in Florida since the beginning of May

In my thirties, I moved from Maryland to Texas: from a warm, humid climate to an extremely hot, extremely humid climate. About that time, I read an article that said that places like Dallas TX were only inhabitable by large numbers of people due to air conditioning. And it was true: I went from an air-conditioned house to an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned office and back again. The air conditioning in my Toyota Corolla did not work when we moved to Texas. We were, fortunately, able to fix that right away. In Texas, in the summer, you do yard work very early in the morning or very late in the evening. The rest of the time you stay indoors. We would wait until it was dark to use the hot tub. I would walk the dogs after dark. So I am willing to believe that hot places where people largely stay indoors in air-conditioned surroundings are going to have Covid-19 outbreaks.

What I haven't seen is C19 statistics on hot places without air conditioning. I am guessing that people still crowd together in shaded areas during the day.

Interesting. But still different than Europe because there are boarder patrols between all the European Countries but not between States.

Boarder patrols can enforce quarantine but there is no one to enforce anything between States except possibly through airports. Hawaii tracks visitors to their hotels and has actually arrested people but you can only fly into Hawaii so it's all done through their airports.

No visitor will quarantine for 2 weeks unless forced. No one will sit in a motel for 2 weeks using up all their money and vacation time, not realistic.

What is realistic - instead of playing the guessing game - is you simply have testing at airports and drive-through testing between States. I wouldn't mind doing drive-through testing. If I was positive I would simply turn around and go back home.
Have you got a link for the border controls. Recently (May) a friend I know flew back from S.America to Paris, then overnight stay, train to Germany and UK. Five countries' borders, no checks anywhere.

I went to the cities today to get my glasses adjusted. I got confused on the interstate on the way home and ended up going 20+ miles out of my way. It’s been so long since I’ve been beyond a 12 mile radius that I just truly couldn’t remember what I needed to do when I came to the choice between continuing straight or taking that exit.

Anyway, getting back to normal will not be easy when my state does open up. I hope the above does not portend how it’s going to go for me.

Then Houston has nothing to worry about if the heat stops it since there is only hot and hotter than hades.

The goal was not to overwhelm the health service. Hence the lockdown, temporary hospitals and hospital ships. Trump wanted to open up as soon as possible. Europe is doing the same. I have posted the link regarding the Gov.uk priorities.

Like I said, good grief. One temporary idea was to not overwhelm the health system. It was not an answer to the problem, nor meant to be.

The lockdown everywhere was to stop the spread. Both countries you mention, the US and the UK, still have a rising problem. The stock market and economy of both countries will not stop the spread.

Please, don't follow the leaders over the cliff. You might notice that the leaders are not jumping.

My experience with Florida is that our efforts were working quite well but, unfortunately, many people are acting like it isn't an issue anymore.

Some of my friends/family are still taking it seriously, but far more are out galavanting around town, having get-togethers, not social distancing during said get-togethers (which they proudly post pics of on FB), not wearing masks when out and about, and acting like the virus is magically gone. According to them, the numbers are going up simply because there is more testing...which isn't accurate because it was stated yesterday during the local press conference that testing is actually down. Anecdotally, I have been hearing that several UCF students who went to a local bar have now tested positive after a bartender there tested positive.

IMO

Church attending is dangerous because it occurs inside. Virus spreads much easier inside than outside.

We'll be planning the opening of our church in stages and in line with the Public Health recommendations. Next Sunday, we'll start allowing 10 of our elderly members who don't have access to our online services to meet for 1/2 hr for worship. But, they have to sit far apart, wash hands upon entry, wear masks, no singing, no collection plates, no communion, separate entrance and exit, no coffee, no kids, bathrooms for emergency only .. etc. It's not going to be the pleasant experience they remember just three months ago, but it's a start, and it will help us feel like we might all eventually be able to return.

The odd thing is, it seems that our seniors, who are the most vulnerable, are also the most careless and the most vocal about returning to church. What is this? I shake my head.

Sometimes you're just ready to go...

I don't believe that we are ready, although we have not had any Covid cases since the end of March, and that was just one couple returning from a cruise that landed in Australia. We've managed to keep our area of 100 mile radius, completely Covid-free, but the ferry starts up this weekend, and short term rentals will be allowed too. We're a magnet for tourism, so we have no idea what our guests will bring us.

We are starting church again because the politicians have moved into phase 2, which allows the slow return of worship services. We do believe that they are acting under public pressure, rather than good health sense, so we will work closely with the Public Health.

I believe that all of Northern Ontario is now Covid-free. Let's hope it stays that way for the rest of the summer. If we can make it to October, then we'll be good to go for the winter. We don't get many guests here in the winter. :)

That certainly is one reason for the lockdown, but not the only one. Had the lockdowns been successful, we could have eradicated the virus and thereby protected developing countries. Another big part of the reason for the lockdown was to prevent deaths by keeping people apart from one another until we had a vaccine or a treatment could be found. Preventing deaths is still the main reason we open up in stages.

Agreed. While overwhelming hospitals is a big problem, so are the deaths of thousands of people, which has been slowed. That's how we usually treat disease. We attempt to slow it.

Can you imagine if someone proposed that some other disease just be allowed to run its fastest course? Let's say Cystic Fibrosis suddenly became contagious, but that we could by quarantining, keep it from infecting half the population. Since it would only be a handful of people who had to be quarantined (and if we had handled CoVId properly in US and UK, we would have shut down earlier), most people would say that yes, they should be quarantined, BUT that they should also get the best medical care, as it's so sad.

That's a sci-fi scenario. But I find it amazing that people would not willingly want to avoid getting disease with the lung issues this causes - and it's more than 1 person who has this issue.

I do understand why people who were kept from going to work are angry about the current situation and many places dropping all their rules suddenly.

At any rate, if people don't care enough about health to really take this seriously, I'm rethinking my entire view on how the medical economy should work.

Exactly - hence my suggestion of Pest Houses and specialized clinics. There is a possibility that there will never be a vaccine. So set up a plan where access to a clinic is granted to those who completely check out of society, and those who can afford it. Everyone else goes to a mass-production treatment facility. If healthcare workers don't want anything to do with this, they don't have to work in that branch of medicine. Problem of hospital overload solved.

I know it's a broken record, but the idea that can "distance" ourselves out of this is insane. The world needs to continue.

My Covid Warrior friends are all cheering the fact that I have become a Mask Evangelist. My sermon is "You don't have to fear the virus, but you do have to fear a healthcare industry that is targeting our way of life in order to protect their Elective Surgery gravy train. Don't give them the optics they need - wear a mask and don't act like an idiot."

What are the travel quarantine rules in Spain, France and other countries?

Except this is a global issue, and you are addressing it with your local understanding.

So my City was sitting at 3 active cases but today now 4. Rally here was a week ago where 2,000 attended. So IMO here we go. From the pics I saw it was very crowded and few masks.

Sorry to hear that. Same here. +6 over last 2 days, population ~100,000. Total cases 117. Active known cases ~38.

The estimate, based on good models, is that there are probably 100 active cases at this point, given the R0 rate (average number of people infected by 1 single individual).

So about 1 in 1000 of the people who come in and out of the grocery store today will be CV+ and transmitting. If I go to a store that's mostly young people who party or people who work in care homes (we still have a huge problem in senior facilities), then it's probably higher than that.

If I get my groceries delivered, it's way lower than that.

So we wait and in a couple of months, this wave will be over. I have no plans.

Governor Cuomo was just on CNN. He does not sound very concerned with New York. He feels they have it under control, and will continue to maintain as such.

He was Extremely concerned about the country as a whole. Says the haphazard way the re-openings were done, resulted in the mess we're in right now. He sees worse things ahead.

What is your Ro rate? Ours seems to be between 0.7 and 0.9. The closeness to 1 worries me with shops opening next week. I honestly think it's going to look like Christmas Eve on the high street
