The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Hey everyone,

Politicizing is not allowed. We realize it's difficult to separate Covid from politics in this discussion, but ...

If you are going to post about 1 or 1 million people attending a rally, a church event, etc, put on by God knows who, make sure your post indicates how the content of that post relates to Covid19 and isn't just about politics or political figures.

From Tricia's post at the beginning of each of these threads:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT.

This post lands at random.

Address the post and NOT the poster.

Snarky, rude and personalizing posts that disrespect or denigrate another member get removed and may result in a permanent Thread Reply Ban or a board Time Out.

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

'How the hell are we going to do this?' The panic over reopening schools

Pediatricians say schools should strive to bring kids back to classrooms.

Teachers unions are on the verge of revolt, in fear of infections.

Local school districts are struggling with everything from technology to staging schools for socially distanced learning.

And Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is largely on the sidelines, saying the corona virus back-to-school planning is a state and local issue.

No wonder parents across America are freaking out.!

This is very true..so many have been lulled into thinking it's a one and done. The profound long term effects are something to fear in my opinion.

For people who think this virus is like the flu or a bad cold: they are in for a rude awakening. This virus can leave behind life-long damage. It is pure evil.

While I understand what you are saying, it is not similar at all. We are speaking of indigenous people living in outback areas, some in very remote areas of Australia where others sometimes visit (eg Cape York).

I am not speaking of the indigenous who have come over to "whitey's way". Who have gone through our education system, perhaps have jobs and homes in the general community.

Great efforts have been undertaken to keep them safe.

Eg:
Concerns about the impact COVID-19 might have on Cape York's Indigenous population saw community lockdowns and Queensland Police roadblocks placed at Mount Carbine on the Mulligan Highway.
Cape York's COVID-19 roadblocks will be taken down on July 10
The religious restrictions mentioned by Sundog during these Coronavirus phases have been deemed unlawful. So all groups in the US need to be treated similarly.

From the above link;

Nearly 2 in 3 adults (66%) say the government response to the COVID-19 pandemic is a significant source of stress.* Of those, 84% say the federal government response is a significant source of stress, followed by state government (72%) and local government (64%). Democrats (73%) are significantly more likely than Republicans (59%) to cite the government response as a source of stress but are only slightly more likely than Independents (68%) to say so. Gen X (ages 42 to 55) (75%) is by far the most likely to say the government response to the COVID-19 pandemic is a significant source of stress, compared to 63% of Gen Z adults (18 to 23), 67% of millennials (24 to 41), 62% of boomers (56 to 74) and 56% of older adults (75+).*”

[...]

“Overall, more than 6 in 10 Americans (63%) agree that the thought of the U.S. reopening causes them stress, but just over 7 in 10 adults (72%) say they are confident they can protect themselves from coronavirus once the U.S. reopens. At the same time, 65% say they wish they had more information about what they should do as their community reopens.*

Parents Stress About the Long-Term Impacts of COVID-19 on Children
Most parents (71%) say they are worried about the impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on their child’s social development, and more than half (55%) report their child has been acting out more since the start of the pandemic.* And while almost 7 in 10 parents (69%) say they are looking forward to their child’s school year being over, 3 in 5 (60%) say they are currently struggling to keep their child occupied, and the same proportion (60%) say they have no idea how they are going to keep their child occupied all summer.*

Despite these challenges, more than 4 in 5 parents (82%) agree that they are grateful for the additional time they’ve had with their child during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Great article to share.... thanks Margarita...

What that has to do with the Australian indigenous is lost on me. We are not about to let them die out because they don't understand the virus. It is bad enough that we took their country from them in the first place. AND we are not stopping them from having their funerals.

As I said before, I will not debate this. Perhaps do some research and gain some understanding? If you are truly interested.

So sad. And so preventable.

Rio Grande Valley hospitals reach capacity ahead of July 4th weekend, officials say

HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas – Hidalgo County, Starr County, and Valley Baptist Health System hospitals have now reached capacity due to the influx of COVID-19 cases in the area, according to a report from KRGV.

An emergency alert was sent out to residents Friday, urging them to stay home and only call 9-1-1 if absolutely necessary.

Hidalgo County hopes to conserve resources as much as possible before the July 4th weekend. Residents are also urged to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people, to shelter-in-place, wear a mask and social distance from others to limit the spread of the virus.

The Valley Baptist Health System has reached its capacity as well with COVID-19 patients, according to a report from KRGV.

KRGV reports the Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen had 141 COVID-19 related patients as of Friday afternoon, and Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville had 97.

According to KRGV’s report, every hospital in the Valley is full and patients are being taken to other parts of Texas.

“There are no beds in the Valley,” Dr. Jose Vazquez, with the Starr County health authority, said to KRGV. “We are becoming New York.”

In New Jersey we are not “freaking out”. Schools are setting up now. I saw pictures of plexiglas around desks in the school offices (I am friends on Facebook with our School District Superintendent) and hand sanitizing stations at the door of each classroom, etc.

Students will stay six feet apart in classrooms and on buses, lunch times will be staggered and teachers will be required to wear masks.

The new rules arer part of a long-awaited “The Road Back: Restart and Recovery Plan for Education” report compiled by state education officials that will serve as a blueprint as schools prepare for the return of the state’s 1.4 million students while the coronavirus pandemic continues.

There are so many layers to the "back to school" issue. Special Education programs are going to be extremely difficult to manage.

How do you take 30 kids and have them be 6 feet apart on a bus?
