Sure, it would be great if it mutated again and became less dangerous. But that doesn't appear to be what has happened, at this point in time.

Choe added the mutation didn't impact the lethality of the virus for those infected, only how contagious it became, according to the paper.

Revelers celebrate the Fourth of July on Coney Island in New York.

“The surge in recent weeks has led to a shortage of hospital beds and threatens to set the economy back even further. This virus is notorious for how contagious it is -- and how easily people can infect others without symptoms, prompting warnings from health officials that the crisis could get even worse after images of packed beaches emerged over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

"We are in free fall," said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, chief of infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"You see the footage of what happened this past weekend. And people are either naive to the influence of their actions, or they're simply resigned to ignore it."”

US coronavirus: US is still 'knee-deep' in the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Fauci says - CNN

If 3million cases is ‘a good place’, what would a struggle look like, I wonder?
The news is so unrelentingly grim again. I have some very dear American friends and I pray every day they’ll make it through this.

I understand how you feel. In just 5 days I would have been flying to the US to visit with a loved one for a significant birthday. I feel so far away, and so helpless to do anything to make things better.

"“It is critical that we all take the personal responsibility to slow the transmission of Covid-19 and embrace the universal use of face coverings," Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday.”

[...]

“If 95% of Americans wore face masks in public, it could prevent 33,000 deaths by October 1, according to the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
Why top health officials reversed their guidance on face masks
US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said if you want more businesses to reopen and stay open, wear a mask.
"Some feel face coverings infringe on their freedom of choice- but if more wear them, we'll have MORE freedom to go out," tweeted Adams, who was nominated by President Donald Trump.
"Face coverings → less asymptomatic viral spread → more places open, and sooner! Exercise and promote your freedom by choosing to wear a face covering!"”

7 myths are fueling new Covid-19 surges. Avoiding these will help save the economy and save lives - CNN

I understand. I hate the feeling of being *stuck*, helpless to do anything to help, of just moving through the same horrid Groundhog Day over and again.
Like so many of us, there are people I am longing to see, places I so want to visit.
I’m really sorry you have to miss your visit. Oh, for a reset button for 2020...

Live updates: Dozens of Fla. hospitals run out of ICU beds as U.S. approaches 3 million coronavirus cases

“As the number of novel coronavirus cases reported nationwide rapidly approaches 3 million, dozens of hospitals in Florida have run out of space in their intensive care units. Arizona is also swiftly approaching full capacity for ICU beds, while Texas, another hot spot, reported more than 10,000 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday.””

Florida hits its highest rate for positive COVID-19 tests in one day

“The chances of getting a positive test for COVID-19 are becoming higher than at anytime since the pandemic began, a sign that the virus is spreading at a quicker pace.

The positive test rate on Tuesday reached 20.8% statewide, the highest yet for a single day.

Equally concerning were the 381 people who were hospitalized from Monday to Tuesday, one of the highest cumulative jumps day to day since the beginning of the pandemic.“

State representative urges Ohioans to 'STOP GETTING TESTED' for coronavirus

One of Gov. Mike DeWine's biggest critics in the Ohio General Assembly has made another incendiary claim in regards to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

State Rep. Nino Vitale (R-Urbana) took to Facebook on Wednesday after DeWine ordered all residents in seven Ohio counties to wear face masks in public. Vitale has long downplayed the severity of the pandemic, and stated he is "tired of living in a dictatorship" amid the continued health guidelines across the state.

"This is what happens when people go crazy and get tested," Vitale wrote. "STOP GETTING TESTED!"

This is not the first time Vitale has raised eyebrows with his bizarre and sometimes false claims about the coronavirus: He has consistently claimed masks do nothing to mitigate the disease's spread despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and stated he would not wear a covering because he believed it would dishonor God. He also frequently attacked Dr. Amy Acton prior to her eventual resignation as health director, calling her an "unelected Globalist" while vowing to fight against her department's orders.

COVID-19 patients in Tucson being transferred to Phoenix, out of state

“When Wade McGee was diagnosed with COVID-19 at 3 a.m. Friday, there was nowhere in Tucson he could get treatment.“

[...]

“She wishes he’d been able to get treatment here, but also said she’s glad he wasn’t transferred out of state — which is the fate some patients are facing as the health-care crisis worsens.

Pima County residents with COVID-19 are being treated in San Diego, Albuquerque or Las Vegas when shortages in staffing, equipment or bed space make it impossible for hospitals close to home to take them.

Others are being sent around the state, like to Wickenburg or, in the case of McGee, Phoenix.“

[...]

““It is important to understand that hospital capacity is about more than just beds,” said Ruiz Hudman. “When we look at our ability to deliver care at the highest level, we are also factoring in equipment, supplies and staffing.””

Arizona doctor fears closing and reopening trend if COVID-19 spread isn't slowed

“An Arizona doctor says her fear is if the state doesn't get a handle on growing COVID-19 cases, we will be in an endless cycle of partially closing and reopening.

On Tuesday, numbers indicate another record-breaking day for
COVID-19 in Arizona.

"We did see a record number of deaths in Arizona today and that is only going to get worse unless we take serious action," says Dr. Natasha Bhuyan, a family physician with One Medical.

She's been following the numbers, she says, and as of Tuesday, Arizona is at a 33% positive rate of COVID-19, which she says might be the most alarming statistic.”

[...]

“"I am just not seeing enough contact tracing," Bhuyan said. "I don't even know what the data is so we are not clear on the hotspots."“

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will hold an emergency meeting Thursday to confront a troubling surge in coronavirus cases in the Tahoe region that officials have linked to businesses and tourists not following mask and social-distancing recommendations.

The dramatic increases in confirmed cases in Lake Tahoe have been linked primarily to large family get-togethers and to visitors “not taking proper precautions,” said Carla Hass, an El Dorado County spokeswoman.

Placer County supervisor Cindy Gustafson told her fellow board members Tuesday that some locals were so upset they urged officials to close state freeways and highways to keep people away, though the county has no authority to do so.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the county’s health officer, Dr. Aimee Sisson, warned supervisors the county is almost certainly going to end up on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s watchlist in the coming days, a move that would mean restaurants would have to shut back down.

California:
Coronavirus updates: Nationwide testing shortage deals setback to surging California

“The coronavirus pandemic is becoming an increasingly urgent situation in the Sacramento region and across California as a whole, both of which are grappling with record-setting influxes of new cases and quickly filling intensive care units of some hospitals.

The newest and most severe local setback came with Monday’s announcement that Sacramento County will need to at least temporarily close five community test centers this week, all of them in underserved communities, due to a lack of testing materials caused by a nationwide supply shortage.”

[...]

“Considering the county and state’s recent emphasis on contact tracing, the problem could quickly compound itself. Health officials for weeks have used diagnostic testing as a basis to track possible sources of outbreaks, as well as to identify and inform the close contacts of an infected person to urge that they get tested. Delays or the inability for those exposed to get such a test, especially in underserved communities, threaten to derail progress in tracking and mitigating spread of the virus.“

“(Reuters) - California reported more than 10,000 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, a record rise for a single day that also surpassed the number of contact tracers recently trained by the state to detect and prevent potential outbreaks.“

[...]

“The daily increase exceeds the 10,000 contact tracers Governor Gavin Newsom announced in mid-May, when case numbers were waning, as part of plans to reopen the state.

Newsom said then that more than 500 people had already been trained to work as “disease detectives”, using state databases to trace and advise people who had been in contact with confirmed cases.“

California's coronavirus hospitalizations remain at all-time high

“Coronavirus hospitalizations in California are reaching new levels, with nearly 6,000 Covid-19 patients.

This is a 3.4% one-day increase as almost 200 more patients were admitted. There are also a record number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units, according to data from California Department of Public Health.

CDPH is recording at least 6,448 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, adding 111 fatalities in today’s report.”

Fresno’s COVID-19 tests keep pace, but a higher share of people are testing positive

“Coronavirus conditions in Los Angeles County continued to deteriorate on Tuesday as officials released numbers that marked another new record for daily new cases and the inflection rate continued to surge.

Officials confirmed 46 more coronavirus-related deaths and 4,015 additional cases Tuesday — the highest number of infections the county has reported in a single day.

That’s largely due to the roughly 2,000 test results that were backlogged from July 2 to July 5.

The seven-day average for the county’s daily positivity rate — those who test positive for the virus — has climbed to 11.6%.”

[...]

““It’s clear that after months of quarantine, combined with the reopening of many sectors in the span of several weeks, we’ve had a lot of people disregard the very practices that allowed us to slow the spread,” Ferrer said. “Our inability to follow the most basic infection control and distancing directives leads to serious illness, and even the death of the people we love.””

And Disney World is still set to open on Saturday.

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., will reopen on Saturday, and Disney has been posting marketing videos online to highlight the safety procedures it has designed to protect visitors and employees.

Some of the 1,000-plus responses to that particular video were supportive. Others were incredulous, with people using words like “irresponsible” and “disappointing.” Disney World is reopening? When coronavirus infections have soared in Florida? “You gotta be kidding,” wrote Alexander Jones, a Seattle motion graphics artist.

A doctor on CNN said 'delirium and hallucinations' are prevalent amongst some patients. Could this be down to medication because I'd not heard of this as being a symptom before now and so this virus becomes more petrifying by the day! X

Coronavirus updates: US sets another grim record with over 60,000 new cases in a day

3:30 a.m.: US sets another record with over 60,000 new cases in a day
More than 60,000 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in the United States on Tuesday, according to a count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

It's the first time the United States has reached or crossed the 60,000 threshold of newly diagnosed cases in a 24-hour reporting period.

Tuesday's caseload shattered the country's previous record set on July 2, when more than 54,000 new cases were identified.

By May 20, all U.S. states had begun lifting stay-at-home orders and other restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The day-to-day increase in cases then hovered around 20,000 for a couple of weeks before shooting back up and crossing 50,000 for the first time last week.
