Tensions rise over masks as virus grips smaller US cities

Arguments over mask requirements and other restrictions have turned ugly in recent days as the deadly coronavirus surge across the U.S. engulfs small and medium-size cities that once seemed safely removed from the outbreak.

In Boise, Idaho, public health officials about to vote on a four-county mask mandate abruptly ended a meeting Tuesday evening because of fears for their safety amid anti-mask protests outside the building and at some of their homes.

One health board member tearfully announced she had to rush home to be with her child because of the protesters, who were seen on video banging on buckets, blaring air horns and sirens, and blasting a sound clip of gunfire from the violence-drenched movie “Scarface” outside her front door.

This is total insanity---- it is frightening- people trying to do the right thing being targets of violence--- and we know exactly why this is happening.

Even though I am certain I had it in April, I'm still sheltered and expect to be for another year at least!
I can't decide take it, and hope it does some good or skip it.
*I have CVID.
"Patients with primary antibody deficiency, including CVID and XLA, cannot produce reliable antibody responses, by definition. Those with combined immune deficiencies, including SCID, will not make good T cell responses to a vaccine. For these individuals a non-live vaccine is'safe' but will not offer protection against COVID."

Wow! What a learning experience and great information on niche folks such as yourself. So sorry that you are in this group which I'm sure no one wants to be a member. Thank you so much for this as has so much information in it that I have never heard of to add to my knowledge base. It also has more information on generalities included.. e.g.

"The JCVI guidance says the order of priority would be as below:

  • residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
  • all those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers
  • all those 75 years of age and over
  • all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals
  • all those 65 years of age and over
  • all individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
  • all those 60 years of age and over
  • all those 55 years of age and over
  • all those 50 years of age and over
It is estimated that taken together, these groups represent around 99% of preventable mortality from COVID-19. "

Trump and Friends Got Coronavirus Care Many Others Couldn’t

Ben Carson, Chris Christie and Donald J. Trump are not the sturdiest candidates to conquer the coronavirus: older, in some cases overweight, male and not particularly fit. Yet all seem to have gotten through Covid-19, and all have gotten an antibody treatment in such short supply that some hospitals and states are doling it out by lottery.

Now Rudolph W. Giuliani, the latest member of President Trump’s inner circle to contract Covid-19, has acknowledged that he received at least two of the same drugs the president received. He even conceded that his “celebrity” status had given him access to care that others did not have.
......
Mr. Giuliani’s candid admission once again exposes that Covid-19 has become a disease of the haves and the have-nots. The treatment given to Mr. Trump’s allies is raising alarms among medical ethicists as state officials and health system administrators grapple with gut-wrenching decisions about which patients get antibodies in a system that can only be described as rationing.
......
Politicians are not the only ones with resources getting access.

In an interview on Wednesday, one prominent businessman, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid harming his reputation, described his aggressive efforts to track down the Regeneron treatment — including calling friends who were hospital executives and hospital donors — after he tested positive last week.

Eventually he was directed to an emergency room in his city, which was expecting him. He was given an infusion of the drug on Monday. He is feeling much better, he said.

A US President is always going to receive top-notch care because an elected President is considered to represent the "will of the people."

If Biden gets sick, he too will receive the same high level of care.

That said, what is this high level of care the big shots are getting? Is the FDA working on making sure more is manufactured so it's available to more people? If it's so good -- they should be.

That stinks -- they have a right to protest -- but I wish they'd leave children and families out of it.

That said, the public messaging from Day One of this virus has been counterproductive. It was unfortunately politicized, which led to people choosing sides without really understanding the significance of their choice.

Any time someone feels as though the powers-that-be are mistreating them -- whether their feelings are based in reality or not -- they're going to act out. 2020 has certainly been a year of protesting and riots, mostly by people who don't see the big picture.

I hope county and state leaders can take a more proactive and positive approach to get folks to wear masks and social distance. It would work so much better than the mandates that people seem bound and determined to violate.

Thanks! I also read that most states will be distributing to incarcerated prisoners at the same time they distribute to nursing homes. I have mixed feelings about that. Prisoners certainly deserve to be protected, too, but I kind of think older adults (65-85) who live at home and have lived good lives should be at the top of the list.

And one of the worst parts about this .....

Mr. Giuliani, 76, appeared unaware of the scarcity issues, telling interviewers that politicians have taken masks and business closures too far now that Covid-19 is “a treatable disease.”

...... people who don't understand that these people are getting a rare treatment will believe these words from Giuliani and think everyone can be treated like this, and not wear masks, and "feel much better".
Maybe he needs to visit all of the full hospitals since he doesn’t understand words and needs a visual to comprehend.

when the president got the virus and then special treatment, which was like a miracle, you just had to know this would not be a good thing for the country- now others like Giuliani got the "miracle" treatment and now they are spouting off that this virus is no big deal.

I forgot to say that ethically speaking this is horrifying. All those people dying: perhaps if at least some of them were able to get the "miracle" Regeneron, they would not have died. It is appalling.

Colorado State Fire Chiefs unhappy with first responder placement on COVID vaccination plan

“Under the plan released Wednesday, first responders, including EMS, police and firefighters, will be in the 1B category, below hospital workers and long-term care facility staff and residents.

“It’s not so much that we want to be put ahead of other health care professionals, but just to be in the same tier as them,” says Lombardi.“

Analysis: As Covid-19 deaths hit a numbing record, 'our hearts and our minds block out the enormity of it' - CNN

“Imagine that 15 passenger jets full of Covid-19 patients crashed today, all across the United States, and killed everyone on board. Because that's what happened minus the airplanes. 3,124 deaths from coronavirus were reported across the US on Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins' tally, making this the highest single day reporting of daily new deaths since the pandemic began.
At this rate, the official death toll in the US will surpass 300,000 this weekend.“

CIDRAP:
Global cases stabilizing, but COVID deaths continue to climb

“Americas region driving new cases
The WHO update showed just under 4 million reported COVID-19 cases in the past 7 days, nearly half of which came from the Region of the Americas, which saw a 12% increase from the previous week. The United States remains the leader in new reported infections (reporting more than 1.2 million new cases over the past week), followed by Brazil, which reported more than 295,000 cases, a 35% increase from the previous week.“

[...]

“The recommended measures include an extended Christmas break for schools, full closure of all but essential businesses starting Dec 24, and as many people working from home as possible. Merkel's comments came the same day that Germany reported a record daily high of 590 COVID-19 deaths.

"Five hundred deaths a day is unacceptable," Merkel told German lawmakers.

While the WHO reports showed overall declines in new cases in the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions, South Korea, which has been widely praised for its response to the pandemic, is now in its third wave of coronavirus outbreaks. The resurgence led the governor of the country's most populous province—Gyeonggi Province, home to the capital city of Seoul—to call for mass testing today to find and isolate new cases, according to Reuters. The country has been averaging about 600 new COVID-19 cases a day, and the majority have been in and around Seoul.“

Thanks, I need to get the word in my vocabulary now! FDA EUA approval for Regeneron = the antibody cocktail which needs to be given ASAP when first diagnosed as it's no good if given later... like when 99.9% of US folks are even allowed to get admitted to hospital vs. "stay at home until you get really bad and need emergency care" pfft. MOO

Say it 3 times.. to remember

Regeneron = Antibody cocktail
Regeneron = Antibody cocktail
Regeneron = Antibody cocktail

I'm still ok with keeping stuff straight re which are mRNA (Pfizer/Moderna) and which are adenovirus carriers (AstraZenecaOxford/J&J)

phew!

There is also the antibody drug from Eli Lilly, bamlanivimab, which was approved by the FDA for emergency use in early November.

COVID relief negotiations continue as deaths, unemployment claims spike

“Legislators and White House officials continued their efforts to hammer out a new COVID relief plan Thursday, as Americans continued to lose their jobs — and their lives — to the pandemic.“

[...]

“After passing the CARES Act in March, the federal government has essentially abandoned direct assistance to individual Americans. Moody’s Analytics projected that nearly 12 million renters will owe an average of $5,850 in back rent and utilities by January, as a federal eviction moratorium is set to expire, potentially leaving millions at risk of losing their homes. Hunger is rising, as census data found that one in eight Americans reported running short of food during a single week in November, with food banks besieged in advance of the holidays and the Washington Post reporting a rise in the shoplifting of food and hygiene products. November’s job numbers were the worst since the recovery started, and small businesses around the country continue to shutter.“
