? I am under 65. And have never even missed a day of work during this whole "lockdown". Some folks have to actually be at work, to perform their job duties. I interact with the public every day.

I am actually surprised that I never caught Covid. People around me did, co-workers, friends, family members...I was never sick. Unless I had a "symptom free" case, but if I had, I am sure that my husband would have caught it from me. And if he had caught Covid, I am pretty sure he would not have survived.

I am so glad that this messed up year is fading. We are still vigilant, but feeling better with the vaccine.
Same here Mickey, early 50s and havent missed a day despite everything ALTHOUGH if I wasnt working from home I'd be up the creek with the fatigue!

Experts and gamers join forces to fight COVID-19 and stop future disease outbreaks via Plague Inc: The Cure
25 March 2021

“Leading disease outbreak experts have come together to show gamers everywhere how to spot and stop a pandemic. The popular simulation Plague Inc: The Cure not only transports players into a global public health outbreak similar to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a new feature also provides expert commentary comparing decisions made by gamers to real-life scenarios.

The game was developed by Ndemic Creations in collaboration with infectious disease experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN).

Players’ skills are put to the test as they try to save the world by balancing public health measures, research and development, and social and economic factors in order to keep the disease under control, all while maintaining public trust. The game holds a mirror to nations everywhere, emphasizing the importance of vaccine research, manufacturing and distribution to mitigate outbreaks, as well as the need for global cooperation to accelerate development.“

I talked to my daughter today, who works at a hardware store, we don't even notice wearing a mask now for 8 hours a day. In the beginning, it drove me crazy. Now, I don't even think about it. As a matter of fact, I sort of like it. I have always been OCD about germs.

Brazil plagued by highly-contagious Covid variant

Signs of collapse abound in Brazil - CNN
Signs of collapse across Brazil as Covid spirals out of control. Bolsonaro seems to have little response

“The scene is a microcosm of what is playing out across Brazil right now amid a brutal and out-of-control wave of Covid-19.
On Thursday night, Brazil's Health Ministry reported the gruesome figure of more than 100,000 new Covid-19 cases confirmed in a single day, the country's highest such figure since the pandemic began.“

As daily deaths near 4,000, worst may lie ahead for Brazil

“Brazil currently accounts for one-quarter of the entire world’s daily COVID-19 deaths, far more than any other single nation, and health experts are warning that the nation is on the verge of even greater calamity.

The nation’s seven-day average of 2,400 deaths a day stands to reach to 3,000 within weeks, six experts told the Associated Press. That’s nearly the worst level seen by the U.S., though Brazil has two-thirds its population. Spikes of daily deaths could soon hit 4,000; on Friday there were 3,650.“

[...]

““The World Health Organization’s director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Monday called for everyone in Brazil to muster a serious response — “whether it’s the government or the people.”

“It’s a concerted effort of all actors that will really reverse this upward trend. It is actually very fast and accelerating really, really fast,” he said. “Especially we’re worried about the (weekly) death rate, which doubled in just one month from 7,000 to 15,000.”

The virus's spread has been turbocharged by the more contagious P.1 variant that has become cause for concern beyond Brazil’s borders, not just in South America. It has already been identified in the U.S., this week in New York. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, said Wednesday that his team will be meeting with Brazilian authorities and are “quite concerned” about the situation in Brazil.”“

A Collapse Foretold: How Brazil’s Covid-19 Outbreak Overwhelmed Hospitals

Good leadership is so important to a country in trying to quell the virus .... and in protecting its citizenry.
I am afraid that the leadership is extremely questionable in Brazil, and has been throughout the pandemic.
This complete disaster has been coming for quite a while. All the signs were there. imo

Absent a coordinated federal response, any restrictions put in place designed to stem the spread of the virus have been left to individual states.
Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais are among the states that have implemented nightly curfews, even as the Bolsonaro administration filed suit in Brazil's Supreme Court declaring that only the federal government has the right to impose such restrictions.

Re: India allegedly blocking vaccine exports - this was actually raised by a reporter in yesterday’s WHO conference, and was disputed by Doc T. In fact, he made a big deal to thank India several times because India has supplied more vaccines to the rest of the world of the world than any other country. As I’m understanding it, India is seeing a major uptick in cases, and as a result of this, a more balanced approach is being taken at this time in order to address this uptick and mitigate the situation. Let me find the section on this discussion from the conference, because there seems to be conflicting information out there. :)

I looked into this further, after reading your post.

India has just gifted 200,000 doses to UN peacekeepers.
They also just gifted 1.2 million doses to Bangladesh.

And they are going into a 2nd wave themselves, so they definitely need much of what they are producing.

The hue and cry was happening, I think, because much of the world has become dependant on India for their production of low cost medicines and vaccines. But I can see that as India is now struggling itself, it needs to get itself out of its own crisis - while slowing exports a bit.

It could be as simple as variants have taken hold there before enough people had received at least one vaccine and/or the particular variants spreading aren’t controlled as well with whatever vaccines that are being used there.

IMO, it’s also possible that you’ve got a lot of people congregating together in smaller groups (small dinner parties in homes, birthday parties, etc) without precautions which is adding to the spread. Sometimes I feel like the more restrictive a place is, the more rebellious the people are over time.

This is an interesting article of just how the UK variant started, humbly and simply on a little island in the UK....
We just cannot lose sight of these variants..
Variant of concern

Please take a look at this article. I am from Michigan and trying to wrap my head around these numbers. How are our cases so much higher than fully open, non mask mandated states?

Michigan's COVID-19 case rate is 3rd worst in US as variants spread

I follow Florida, and Florida has always been leading the pack on the UK variant, though earlier CA was second....
but with so much outside socializing it makes a big difference....

Now MIchigan, and Texas has come into second and third place.

According to the most recent tally by the CDC, which is slightly more recent than the data provided by the state, Florida has had 912 variant cases in all, most of them the highly contagious B.1.1.7 strain from the United Kingdom. The state with the next highest total is Michigan, with 617, followed by Texas with 420.

South Florida leads state in COVID variants, data shows

CDC Director Warns of Possible Covid Surge as U.S. Cases Increase by 7%
The U.S. could suffer another surge in Covid-19 cases unless pandemic safety measures are maintained, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Friday.

The nation is recording a seven-day average of about 57,000 new Covid-19 cases per day, a 7% jump over the last week, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House news briefing on the pandemic. New hospitalizations are up "slightly" at roughly 4,700 admissions per day, she said.

This is just so depressing
Locally we’re already currently looking at some “little surges”
Despite vaccine progress, active COVID cases in Mass. keep rising; now at 28,078 after a week of increases

‘A little surge’: New COVID cases in March continue to increase in Worcester

Progress elusive as Worcester, state COVID cases rise

COVID Cases, High-Risk Communities Rise in Mass.

More than 900 COVID-19 cases reported among Mass. students, staff

As older Americans are vaccinated, we're seeing declining hospitalizations in that group. To address areas of outbreak, we should allocate more of the increased vaccine supply coming into the market to places where penetration is low and infection rates high, like metro Detroit.

Michigan, Massachusetts, and the New York tri-state region remain some of the areas of greatest concern, where Covid cases are beginning to surge again.

Harvard and Johns Hopkins Dr. that many follow has an interesting thread on twitter re Mexico and variants. First of thread starts at this link.

"BREAKING—Mexico's government is acknowledging in a quietly released report that the country's true death toll from the coronavirus pandemic now stands above 321,000. That is almost 60% more than Mexico’s official test-confirmed number #COVID19 cases"

His reference of the thread is at the AP site Mexico's real COVID-19 death toll now stands at over 321,000

He also is focused on Brazil

Variant of concern

Thank you for this (posting over in the Variants thread, which needs a lot of updating and work - been taking a long break).

This reminds me of something the doctor said in this Brazil video wrt how these variants form - he said something along the lines of when the virus infects someone who may be elderly or immunocompromised, the virus stays longer in their system, and it is during this longer period of the virus staying in one’s body that it may undergo changes, because it has more time it has to replicate. This is a loose paraphrasing, but I found it interesting, as I had wondered what circumstances/conditions lends themselves specifically to these mutations within an individual(s).

Dr. Ding? This is the same doctor I was just talking about in the above post, who explained about elderly/immunocompromised having the virus in their systems longer, which can lend to replication and the forming of new variants (paraphrasing).

This is also the same doctor in the Brazil video I posted upstream who says we need to get aid and vaccines to Brazil NOW, not only for them, but for the sake of the world, as related to the emergence of variants.

Additionally from your link:

Mexico's real COVID-19 death toll now stands at over 321,000

“The higher toll would rival that of Brazil, which currently has the world’s second-highest number of deaths after the United States. But Mexico’s population of 126 million is far smaller than either of those countries.

The new report also confirms just how deadly Mexico’s second wave in January was. As of the end of December, excess death estimates suggested a total of about 220,000 deaths related to COVID-19 in Mexico. That number jumped by around 75,000 in just a month and a half.

Also suggestive were the overall number of “excess deaths” since the pandemic began, around 417,000. Excess deaths are determined by comparing the deaths in a given year to those that would be expected based on data from previous years.

A review of death certificates found about 70.5% of the excess deaths were COVID-19 related, often because it was listed on the certificates as a suspected or contributing cause of death. But some experts say COVID-19 may have contributed to many of the other excess deaths because many people couldn’t get treatment for other diseases because hospitals were overwhelmed.

Former President Felipe Calderón wrote in his Twitter account Saturday that “more than 400,000 Mexicans have died, above the average for previous years ... probably the highest figure in the world.”“
