‘You cannot predict how it will affect you': 21-year-old's COVID warning

In the week he was due to receive his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Jett Stanton returned a positive test. The next night, he was in a hospital bed.

The 21-year-old semi-professional skateboarder from Liverpool, in Sydney's south-west, said he had "no idea" the virus - which he had tried to avoid in a hot spot area by staying home - would affect him so drastically.

"I can't stress enough, regardless of how healthy and young you are, you cannot predict how [COVID-19] will affect you."

In a widely shared Instagram post, Mr Stanton warned his 3000 followers - with whom he usually shares footage of skateboarding tricks and details of upcoming shows - to not buy into misinformation about the virus.

"COVID is NOT a joke and is not to be played with," he wrote. "It is not the government trying to control you and I can 100 per cent assure you this is not a flu like some of you say it is."

here are the main problems:

1. everyone wants to make the "right" decision and be a winner
2. the data we have now seems to show that masks help, but they do not totally stop transmission...
3. virus is evolving
4. no one really knows for certain what will happen in the future
5. no matter what decision a person makes, s/he will probably be criticized
for it

it is kind of a no win situation for a politician IMO

That's why politicians should not be making public health decisions.

Canada is also having a federal election shortly, and covid will undoubtedly be an issue, but Public Health decisions here are managed by the Chief Public Health Officer, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the provincial counterparts, which have the clout to enact and enforce public health decisions.

If it was left up to our political leaders we'd all be dead already.

I doubt the conversation got that far.

“Here’s your sign to hold up at the protest”

“Dad doesn’t believe in this Covid crap and no one is going to make us wear a mask”

Standing beside Mom in a frenzied crowd holding the sign she made for you and yelling at your classmates across the street.

Sounds like a great start to the school year. Sigh :(

That sounds exactly like what's happening around here. This morning, I visited my mother at the nursing home and they brought her outside in a wheelchair, since I'm not allowed in. I pushed her around the block a couple of times and we sat and chatted. It dawned on me that while I am vaccinated and my mom is vaccinated, the nursing home has to follow strict visitation rules because so many have skipped the vaccine and so Delta is ravishing communities. I don't think they understand that others are actually suffering because they choose not to get the shot.

I think some of it is fear that they'll have side effects, but I also think some of it is because they think enough others will get the shot to stop the virus so they don't have to. They can just skate by.

Tennessee talk show host, Phil Valentine, just died from Covid.

I agree. The survival of their careers seems more important than the survival of their constituents.

I was just going to post this. Another person who thought that even if they contracted the virus it would not kill them---or make him very very ill--- he guessed wrong. On his death bed he wished he had taken the jab. sigh.

Parents Are Not Okay — The Atlantic

The rapid increase of COVID-19 cases among kids has shattered last year’s oft-repeated falsehood that kids don’t get COVID-19, and if they do, it’s not that bad. It was a convenient lie that was easy to believe in part because we kept most of our kids home. With remote learning not an option now, this year we’ll find out how dangerous this virus is for children in the worst way possible.”

FDA issue 'You are not a cow' warning after livestock drug use | Daily Mail Online

The FDA issued a bizarre warning on Saturday begging Americans to stop taking a popular anti-parasitic drug for livestock to treat or prevent COVID-19.

'You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y'all. Stop it,' the agency tweeted.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence proving that ivermectin is effective at decreasing one's chances of catching or treating the virus, State Health Office Thomas Dobbs revealed there had been multiple cases in Mississippi of people taking the drug to treat the virus.

One person was even hospitalized for ingesting it; a 'kind of crazy' act he compared to 'getting chemotherapy at a feed store.'

'Please don't do that,' he said.

On Friday, Mississippi's state health department issued a statement on the COVID-19 treatment myth about ivermectin after cases of people consuming the drug in the state were reported.

I posted this on the Michigan Covid thread a couple of days ago and thought some here might like to see this video. Michigan schools will reopen over the next three weeks, and I anticipate ongoing angst over the mask issue. Local school board meetings have been quite animated with parents protesting for or against mask mandates. Things could get ugly when the school year commences.

School mask debate gets heated in Macomb County (clickondetroit.com)

It is obvious to see that the parents have their children right with them when they are yelling at each other about masks. The poor kid who was with the yelling, unmasked mother was trying to pull away from his mother ... he seemed embarrassed, and perhaps upset by the confrontation.

Can someone post a link to the Michigan covid thread?

Thanks

Across the United States, religious figures, doctors, public officials and other community leaders are trying to help people circumvent COVID-19 precautions.

In Oregon, superintendent Marc Thielman of the rural Alsea School District told parents they can sidestep the governor's school mask requirement by applying for an accommodation for their children under federal disabilities law.

In Kansas, the Spring Hill school board is allowing parents to claim a medical or mental health exemption from the county's requirement that elementary school students mask up. They do not need a medical provider to sign off.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry posted sample letters that would allow parents to seek a philosophical or religious exemption from Edwards's mask rule at schools — or from a vaccine requirement, if one is enacted.

In California, the state medical board is investigating a doctor who critics say is handing out dozens of one-sentence mask exemptions for children in an attempt to evade the statewide school mask requirement.

Pastor Greg Fairrington of Rocklin's Destiny Christian Church has issued at least 3,000 religious exemptions to people with objections to the vaccine, which is becoming mandatory in an increasing number of places in California.

...an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, warned ... The virus is "looking for fractures in the system," he said, "and we have plenty of fractures in the system."

Jeff Landry, LA. Attorney General is from my parish, loves the publicity, hopes to be our new governor, was Covid+ himself, and loves, loves lawsuits. His office has been riddled with embarrassing scandals. My understanding is that the State Department of Education Superintendent will determine the mask mandate in schools. I don't believe that religious exemptions will be accepted here.

If you go on the very fake SM and look up “protect your family” with no spaces between the words and a hash tag in front of it, you will see the massive fear and backwards information. This sort of thing is part of why we are in the predicament that we are in. It is reposted and reposted and more people have bought in than I can even believe. People I know.

Yes indeed, misinformation has spread so far now I don’t know how it can go back. Even Trump got booed by his own supporters today, after saying they should get a vaccine.

Ever since I got my 1st Pfizer vaccine this month something has been following me, is the government tracking me  ?

Never mind!

It's just my neighbor trying out his new drone

Here's a video that Covid long-haulers may find encouraging:

'It Changed My Life,' Covid-19 Long-Hauler Symptoms Reduce After Being A Part Of Local Recovery Study

published Aug 16, 2021 by Local 24 Memphis

This is wonderful news if it works! I know a very young person who was infected early on, and they just seemed very different for months after release from the hospital.

I'm trying to figure out what the "pill" they are given is, though. I wish they would say, though I'm guessing there's a reason for that.

This article refers to a different clinic, but it mentions some treatments.

New Long-Haul COVID Clinics Treat Mysterious and Ongoing Symptoms

Lacking established therapies specifically for long COVID symptoms, physicians are feeling their way through treatment protocols, mostly relying on approaches that have been used successfully in other ailments with similar symptoms. A patient diagnosed with post-exertional malaise, a type of fatigue caused by mental or physical activity, will undergo a series of heart and lung tests and get a blood panel analysis to evaluate their electrolyte, vitamin and thyroid levels. The idea is to rule out other contributing medical conditions before putting the patient on a rehabilitative exercise regime. Neurological stimulants such as Adderall, Dexedrine and Ritalin have proved effective at improving energy and focus. Albuterol—an inhaled medicine frequently used to treat asthma—inhaled steroids and breathing exercises have improved breathing.
