Well, my peers have told me they don’t want to talk about about the CV anymore

I guess we’re stuck each other!

Anyway, FTR I love this group here, I love the vibe in these threads. I love these highly academic and enriching discussions based on so many subjects. Once again, thanks for being here. I’d hate to be alone in here like I was in the hepatitis thread.:D (Take a peek in there, it’s quite funny actually to see me posting all alone in there - am I talking to myself lol)

I’m also finding this thread a nice change of pace from the usual “did the husband do it” and “why didn’t CPS get involved sooner” threads. (ETA: Of course, I wish we weren’t here to begin with, kwim.)

When did HIV and viral therapy begin in Wuhan?
I can't remember when it was reported?

"China names HIV drugs as part of drug treatment plan for Wuhan virus"

So difference in survival rate depending on access and immediacy of treatment?

The 50 year old traveled to China in late September. She has health issues that require regular treatment. I thought the city wasn’t locked down until mid-January? If she needs frequent treatments I would think she would have been back home way before the end of the year? I would be scared so far from home in a quarantined environment.
She might have been able to receive treatment (whatever that is) prior to the lock down.

the UK group will not be able to avoid meeting each other in that accommodation...also, with the new ones arriving today/tomorrow, presumably the clock is reset for them back to 14 days

sorry for copying my own post but no longer able to edit...

It has been announced that the original 83 group will not be expected to stay in quarantine beyond the 14 day limit. Wirral Council has stated that because the new arrivals - 11 in total - had been kept isolated before departing China, then they are not considered a risk to those already in quarantine.

At least some of the current UK group are citizens who live permanently in China. Therefore I am assuming that, after their quarantine period ends, they may still need to be accommodated at APH, as they do not have residences in the UK.

When I mentioned to my family that WS has a thread on the virus, my husband muttered, "Enablers...."

LOL.

They are happy not to hear me spew every changing stat - I just share with you guys instead. So, thanks for keeping my family happy. :)

(Might take a break from this case on Monday...Iowa is happening, iykwim.)

Spanish flu - Wikipedia

This was about a century ago, long before commercial air travel made virus hopping much faster. It is interesting to note, that there is a hypothesis that the "Spanish Flu" originated in China.

There are similarities between this pandemic and the 1918 flu, hitting normally healthy people very hard.

Thailand Sees Good Result from Using Drug Mixture on Coronavirus
February 2, 2020

“Thailand found good results after using a mix of two antiviral drugs on a Chinese patient who was in a serious condition with the novel coronavirus, according to a health ministry briefing.

The patient’s condition significantly improved within 48 hours after the medical team decided to use antiviral drugs originally used for HIV and influenza in his treatment, Kriangsak Attipornwanich, a doctor at the state-owned Rajavithi Hospital who is treating the patient, told reporters at the Public Health Ministry briefing Sunday. The patient’s test result also turned negative, the doctor said.”

Fabulous news! Try the stuff already in use even though it is off label. The WHO declaration allows for now the countries to try stuff that they weren't allowed to before as it would be considered off label/experimental. Another reason the WHO notice was needed last week, it allows not only governmental funds to be release, but the "compassionate" rules kick in (said that word before, but not sure what the correct name is for such)

Right. I totally agree about the numbers being under-reported - but that just makes the stats look all the more strange, imo. The death rate in under-reported Hubei is about 3% - and that is much higher than elsewhere, where the numbers are more reliable.

So if Hubei is underreporting (which the world thinks it is), then the death rate there is likely much, much higher than elsewhere in the world.

Just makes me curious - mostly in a sort of academic way in examining what numbers tell us (and the dangers when data is kept secret).

You stated "So if Hubei is underreporting (which the world thinks it is), then the death rate there is likely much, much higher than elsewhere in the world."

Consider....If the deaths are accurate w/ history of being positive correct, and the cases of positive test are under reported and should be higher, that would mean the % mortality per infection would go down, not be much much higher I would think.

"The U.S. had seen eight confirmed cases in five states, but New York has now become the 37th state looking into possible cases."

FYI, I found the paperwork that the states submit with their sample and information required just now, so posting as relevant here

I'm not particularly worried, to be honest. More likely to be sitting next to someone drinking Corona than having corona. :)

:p:p:p:p:p:p

The doubling thing is interesting. Another consideration is when does it peak? At some point, it won't increase anymore. Any models on predicting that, especially the international cases now that protocols seem to be working well?

BTW, I am visual too. I am always making charts, graphs, maps in my life! :)

I would think that isolation and therapeutics (using known antivirals under the experimental exemption...or whatever it's called that countries can do because of the WHO announcement) are going to be the key to peak falling off. And you betcha that all the major countries of France (Pasteur Institute), Germany, US will be treating under this exception big time! Heck, we have just seen Thailand info that looks great as to it's being done. As WHO said, #1 was diagnostic test, #2 therapeutices #3 vaccine are priorities in that order. MOO

Bwaaa Haaa Haaa! Talking to people about this would give you folks walking away from you at the SuperBowl party tonight! Don't do it! Come here :D. That would be just as bad as going to the party and talking about our latest murder cases and killings! Yep, you would be shunned! Talk about the commercials, have a drink, but do not talk about Coronavirus or WS cases dear.

Dayuuum! Great news. I never thought of that being done but is so logical to Isolate them before they leave. I wish all countries were doing this. Those epidemiologists are SMART cookies. By the way, who here has cookies today that was handing them out on the last thread?

I should've been more clear. I think all the numbers from Hubei are suspect - including, and perhaps especially, the number of deaths. I think they are higher than what's been reported, with many early deaths not reported.

Not based in fact, just a hunch and with a big dose of suspicion about any numbers from that particular province.

I just have the feeling that this is different from the regular type of flu in some way. Either it lasts longer, has more complications, has other kinds of side effects. I'm not sure, but the speed of all the quarantines and the shutting down of so many borders strikes me as unique. At least it looks like the spread may be starting to slow down (fingers crossed). Moo

( Yeah how rude, CV has been banned from my family discussion, pffft.)

:D

It is hard to discuss this outside of here. I can discuss with my hubby but I don't saturate. One friend had a lot of misinformation. My 85 year old Danish MIL is worried she will get it. I try to gently give a brief synopsis of what you can do and risk factors. I don't think it mattered. Sigh...........

I only tune into Super Bowl at half time. I might take a peek just to see when the crowd is panned if there are clusters of empty seats, masks, things of that nature. Have fun all of you who enjoy and celebrate.
