Two people in Britain test positive for coronavirus
On Wednesday night, an apartment hotel in North Yorkshire was put on lockdown when a man, understood to be a Chinese national, was taken to hospital after falling ill. The man, who was a guest at the Staycity hotel in the centre of York, was taken to hospital, together with family members, by medics... Two members of the same family in the UK have tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, England’s chief medical officer has confirmed.. Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary is one of the UK’s high-consequence infectious disease units, where people can be nursed in isolation. The two main such units are at Newcastle and at the Royal Free in London, but there are others in London and Liverpool..... Medical chiefs declined to give any detail on the condition of the two patients, including where they are from and if they had travelled to the UK from China, citing patient confidentiality.

Kate Proctor @Kate_M_Proctor (Guardian correspondent)
Prof Chris Whitty, CMO: "We are very confident that beyond 14 days there is no infectiousness.
"This is a virus where 98% of people survive."
Would not confirm if they had been to Wuhan or China.
However he adds: "It's no surprise that this [virus] didn't autogenerate in the UK"

Professor Christopher John MacRae Whitty CB FRCP FFPH FMedSci is a British physician and epidemiologist, who is Chief Medical Officer for England, Chief Medical Adviser to the UK Government, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department of Health and Social Care and head of the National Institute for Health Research. Based on his comments and readings in other articles, he's saying that they must have travelled from China, ergo the "didn't autogenerate in the UK comment")

BREAKING: two cases of coronavirus being treated at Newcastle's infectious disease unit. New Gov advice: anyone coming back from China with respiratory symptoms should self isolate for 14 days. Anyone coming back from Wuhan, with symptoms or not, should self isolate for 14 days.

Hong Kong considers tracking suspected coronavirus patients with electronic devices
As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 12 in Hong Kong, the government had considered using electronic devices to track suspected patients that require home isolation. Tracking devices developed in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park were being prepared for use by patients and 200 units may be deployed as early as next week.

Schools in Hong Kong will stay suspended until March 2
Primary and secondary schools were originally set to resume on February 17, but will now stay suspended until March 2. The government will re-evaluate at that point whether to resume classes, depending on the status of the outbreak.

India says it will fly 400 citizens out of Wuhan
A “special” flight will leave on Friday and bring back about 400 Indian citizens. The passengers will land in New Delhi by 2 a.m. local time on Sunday. The Health Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry will make further arrangements once the passengers arrive.

Local input from the Wirral

Staff at Arrowe Park hospital described their "panic" after many found out on the news that around 80 Britons returning from China would be quarantined there while they are screened for coronavirus.

On Thursday night it was announced an evacuation flight from Wuhan, is due to arrive at the RAF airbase Brize Norton in Oxfordshire at about 1pm today.

Its passengers will then be transferred to the hospital under police escort, where they will be quarantined in a staff accommodation block.

Today a nurse at Arrowe Park, who did not wish to be named, told the ECHO staff had not taken the news well. They said: "Most staff heard it on the news first which is terrible, panic is the word I would use. At least warn your staff before the news, also the Wirral population are worried also.

Another new article from a professor of biology that compares the differences and similarities between this outbreak and SARS. It also has some basic information about calculating transmission and mortality rates for a new virus for
anyone interested.
MOO - it’s still all educated guesswork at this point in the ball game.

Is the Coronavirus Outbreak as Bad as SARS Or Worse? — The National Interest

I found the last paragraph to be interesting as well as concerning.

“With a little luck some cities may be able to control their outbreaks. With open scientific collaboration we may learn which containment strategies work best, in preparation for our next pandemic later this decade.”

First two cases of Wuhan coronavirus confirmed in Russia

Russia has identified its first two Wuhan coronavirus cases, both Chinese citizens. One patient is being treated in Zabaikalsky region, which borders China, with the second case detected in the Tyumen region in Western Siberia, which borders Kazakhstan.

Russia will begin evacuating its citizens from Chinese provinces of Wuhan and Hubei, where there are 300 and 341 Russians respectively.

Sorry, but transcript is in all caps... this is a question some of us have had.
THE SECOND QUESTION THAT YOU’RE ASKING IS, IS IT POSSIBLE TO DETECT THIS VIRUS BEFORE SOMEBODY IS SYMPTOMATIC, AND THE ANSWER IS WE DON’T KNOW YET, AND WE’RE LOOKING CLOSELY TO SEE IF WE CAN. THE LOOKING TAKES TWO DISTINCT WAYS. ONE IS PART OF OUR LOOKING AT THE CONTACTS AROUND THESE CASES IS TAKING SAMPLES FROM THEM AND PERHAPS HOPING THAT NOT ONLY WILL WE FULFILL A PUBLIC HEALTH MISSION BY DOING THAT BUT TRYING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW THE VIRUS IS TRANSMITTED. THERE ALSO ARE SEROLOGICAL TESTS DEVELOPED IN THE UNITED STATES AND ELSEWHERE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY HELP US LEARN MORE ABOUT AT A POPULATION LEVEL HOW EXPOSURE IS TAKING PLACE. FINALLY I GUESS I WOULD SAY THAT IT’S GOOD NEWS THAT THERE WILL BE SOON A W.H.O. MISSION IN TO CHINA. THERE’S MUCH TO LEARN FROM THERE, MORE DETAILED EXPERIENCE THAT IS BY FAR WHERE THE VAST MAJORITY OF CASES ARE AND HOPEFULLY LOOKING IN DETAIL AT THEIR DATA WILL HELP US WITH THIS SPECIFIC QUESTION WHICH IS CERTAINLY SOMETHING THAT THE PUBLIC HEALTH AUTHORITIES IN THE UNITED STATES WOULD BENEFIT FROM KNOWING.

looks like the plane passengers will help CDC learn by having baselines tests...
"All of the 195 passengers are without the symptoms associated with novel coronavirus. And all have been given assigned living quarters at the air force base. All of the 195 have agreed to remain on base voluntarily. CDC has now begun a second stage of further screening and information gathering from the passengers. The passengers will be offered testing as part of this thorough risk assessment. And samples will be sent to CDC.... Thanks also for the opportunity to clarify around what the status of the travelers are. You know, quarantine is a regulatory authority. It’s used to isolate someone because they pose a threat to the health of their family or their community. In this instance, we have 195 travelers who are willingly undergoing isolation for the purpose of medical evaluation and investigation of their risk.

Just to add re APH and the * empty NHS facility* as msm were calling it.
It is by no means empty. The accommodation blocks are in regular use. Many of the students and nurses have lived in this accommodation for years, it is their home, not just a temporary accommodation.
Some of them had less than 4 hours notice to move themselves and all their belongings out of their home.
They are now being accommodated at hotels - which will mean longer travel times for them to get to and from work.

The reason being given for using this accommodation is that the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is a short journey away. I admit it's the best in the business but equally there is another school of tropical medicine far closer to Brize Norton and I am sure alternative accommodation could have been found which would not have required a 4 hour journey by coach across the country( they are as I understand it, taking the A roads and not the motorway ).

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

** Electrolux said the epidemic could have a material impact if its Chinese suppliers were further affected and that it was implementing contingency plans.

** H&M said store closures in China - about 45 - hurt sales in January. The company said it sources “a lot” from China but its flexible supply chain had contained disruptions so far.

** Hyundai Motor said it planned to halt South Korean production of a sport utility vehicle this weekend to cope with a supply disruption caused by the virus outbreak.

** Jaguar and Land Rover parent Tata Motors expects the outbreak to hamper production in China and hit profits.

** Levi Strauss shut about half its stores in China and said it will take a near-term hit.

** LG Display said it had not yet closed any of factories in China but warned the outbreak increased uncertainty for suppliers.

** McDonald’s, which closed several hundred of its roughly 3,300 stores in China, said overall impact on profits would be “fairly small” if the virus stayed contained in China.

** Remy Cointreau warned that a potential impact from the outbreak would be significant because of its big exposure to China.

** Royal Caribbean Cruises, which canceled three trips of its China-based cruise liner, trimmed its 2020 earnings forecast by about 10 cents per share, and said it would take a further 10-cent hit if travel restrictions continued until the end of February.

** Sangyong Motor said it would idle its plant in the South Korean city of Pyeongtaek from Feb. 4 to Feb. 12 for the same reason.

** Samsung Electronics said it had extended a holiday closure for some factories in line with Chinese government guidance but declined to comment on the impact.

** Samsung affiliate and battery maker Samsung SDI, which counts Volvo among its customers, warned of a hit to its March-quarter earnings.

Pilots, flight attendants demand flights to China stop as virus fear mounts worldwide

Pilots and flight attendants are demanding airlines stop flights to China as health officials declare a global emergency over the rapidly spreading coronavirus, with American Airlines’ pilots filing a lawsuit seeking an immediate halt.

APA President urged pilots assigned to U.S.-China flights to decline the assignment. In a statement, the American Airlines’ flight attendants union said they supported the pilots’ lawsuit and called on the company and the U.S. government to “err on the side of caution and halt all flights to and from China.”

Pilots at United Airlines, the largest U.S. airline to China, concerned for their safety will be allowed to drop their trip without pay.

A U.S. flight attendant who recently landed from one major Chinese city said a big concern is catching the virus and spreading it to families, or getting quarantined while on a layover.

Delta Air Lines is operating fewer flights and offering food deliveries so crew can stay in their hotels.

United announced another 332 U.S.-China flight cancellations between February and March 28, though it will continue operating round trip flights from San Francisco to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Air France, which maintained China flights throughout the SARS epidemic, suspended its Beijing and Shanghai flights on Thursday after cabin crews demanded an immediate halt.

Nurse inside Arrowe Park tells of staff 'panic' at coronavirus

I can’t even fathom the fear, anxiety, and panic that the Chinese are currently experiencing. If a full blown outbreak occurs here in the US, I’m not so sure we would handle the situation as well as they have thus far.
All of the political bipartisan bickering we have going on would almost definitely hinder any immediate action plan.

*PLEASE NOTE*
I am not trying to bring politics to this thread ! Just adding my own opinion that our current political environment could hinder our response to such an outbreak. I’m sure there are several other countries that would face similar challenges based on regional politics and/or internal conflicts, religious conflicts, etc,...

How would the world as a whole deal with an outbreak if it occurred in Syria? Or similar regions of conflict around the globe?
China’s political structure has played a huge role in the efforts of containment. Again, not expressing ANY political viewpoints - I’m only expressing my own viewpoint that China’s political structure has been advantageous to their response to the outbreak, and openly wondering (doubting) that a similar response would even be possible in most other regions of the globe.

I’ll add that I live in Indiana, and there are already signs of anxiety spreading locally. There are the confirmed cases in Chicago, and there is a potential case in Porter County Indiana at the moment.

Far from panic, but many here are definitely on edge and on high alert.

Potential case of coronavirus identified in Porter County

Checking on current numbers outside of China:

120 cases spread over 21 countries. ZERO deaths reported outside of China.

A change I'm noticing is "recovered" cases are now popping up on the list. That's great information to have for many reasons, and I hope countries continue to report "recovered." I wish it were required to report that number.

Top 5 countries outside of China:

Thailand. 19 cases. (7 reported as recovered.)
Singapore: 16 cases.
Japan: 15 cases + 2 diagnosed who don't have symptoms.
South Korea: 11 cases.
Australia: 9 cases (2 reported as recovered.)

9780 cases in China, with the majority (5806) of that number in the Chinese province where the virus originated.

Health Dept. confirms second possible case of coronavirus in Northern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health was looking at four potential cases of coronavirus in Virginia, with two in Central Virginia and two in Northern Virginia.

One of those cases is a George Mason University student who has been tested for the coronavirus and has put themselves in self-isolation.

The cases in central Virginia came back negative, however, the two cases in Northern Virginia are still pending.

Very interesting, I was also surprised at their choice of location, given the number of military bases we have, some with with empty accommodation, I’d have thought that was a much safer option ( surely they could have been flown more directly to the location also )

More airlines suspend flights to and from China amid coronavirus fears

Vietnam’s VietJet said it would temporarily cancel all flights to and from the country from Saturday.

Singapore Airlines said it would reduce capacity on some of its routes to mainland China in February, but ruled out a full halt to its schedule.

Air New Zealand has now said it will reduce services to four a week rather that its current daily flights. New Zealand’s economy is particularly dependent on the fortunes of China, perhaps explaining the relatively muted change by the national carrier. New Zealand has seen its currency shed 2% against the U.S. dollar this week on coronavirus fears.

Chinese carrier Shanghai Airlines said it would suspend its flights to Hungary from the cities of Chengdu and Xi’an for almost two months until March 26. Other flights to Asian destinations remain operational.

African airlines RwandAir and Kenya Airways fully suspended all flights to China, giving no indication when they would resume.

Delta said it was halving its China flights to 21 per week until at least the end of March.

American Airlines is to suspend all its LA flights to Beijing and Shanghai from February 9 until March 27.

United, who had already suspended 24 flights to Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai next week, has now said it will extend that to 332 return flights until the end of March.

British Airways cancelled all flights to mainland China for a month.

Air France took a similar decision but restricted its change until February 9.

Other airlines to suspend flights to China include Air India, Air Seoul, Air Tanzania, Cathay Pacific, Egyptair, El Al, Finnair, Lion Air, Royal Air Maroc, SAS, Turkish Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

This will likely help prevent the virus from spreading, but I can't help but think the flights are canceled because the airlines currently don't have enough customers who WANT to take those flights - more of an economic decision than medical, or, more likely, a combination of both.

Singapore has suspended visas for China and banned visitors who have recently traveled to mainland China.

People who have been to mainland China within the past 14 days will not be allowed to enter or transit through Singapore. The ministry said it would stop issuing new visas and suspend short term and multiple term visas for travelers with passports from the People’s Republic of China.

Singapore currently has 13 confirmed cases.

The impact on American businesses will be felt. For example, China closed all the movie theaters, and the American film industry relies on income from foreign distribution - it's a significant source of revenue.
