My brother owns a surveillance company (in Arkansas) and I have helped install these type systems.

1) tHERE IS A MASTER PASSWORD THE OWNER WILL SET HIMSELF (oops, caps) that even the insyallers will not know.

2) There can be (depending on type of DVR) at least 4 remote or on location passwords given with each one having only the access given by the owner with master password.

3) Not knowing their limits, a remote location may have thought he/she shut down the recorder (dvr) but only shut down his access.

Couldn't the system be set up so even though the alarm is disabled, that the video surveillance continues regardless?

There have been statements in various media sources that the 7 perps who have been arrested didn't really know each other very well. So, what connects them? How does a group of guys who are not very well acquainted decide to get together for an entire month to train to go in and murder two people? I still think there is a big piece of the puzzle missing.

Money is a universal and timeless connector and motivator. I hate to think that the motive behind something so horrible and convoluted can ultimately come down to the oldest/simplest of explanations, but its most likely the truth. With this many characters, there will be a few different motivations, but I'm pretty sure the bottom line for them all boiled down to money - either a $$ gain they expected to receive from the crime or some type of past monetary transaction the victims and the suspects were involved in together. When individuals start getting into transactions where one party has the power to take the other's home or money from them, they have opened a door into a world that none of us want to be a part of...IMO.

I have believe it was a murder for hire from the beginning. I just think if these people trained for 30 days and were in and out in 10 minutes, they knew this family was at home at the time. Surely they would have trained how to rob them without killing them. If they were in and out in 10 minutes, then someone's job was to kill them. With that many people they could have tied them up and just robbed them. Someone wanted them dead. JMO I'm not sure that everyone knew that the couple would be killed. Some may have only believed they were there to rob them.JMO

ITA, someone wanted this couple DEAD! The robbery could of happened at any time by a few people............this was a cold blooded planned murder!
Anymore some will kill for a couple bucks, the thrill of it or drugs...........lots of sociopaths out there.
A blessing that no one else got murdered! staff & children were saved!!!

An interesting piece of information I gleaned early on has to do with the Auto business. The Purshu Auto lot is fairly small and nothing glitzy. I did a bit of research into the named manager as I was curious what kind of salary he might make. I found a real estate transaction from Jan. 2009 where he had put his home in a family trust. The value of the homes in the immediate area start at over $550,000. I don't believe the manager is a person of interest in this case, but the salary requirement to afford the home seems a bit out of character with the business itself (based on the street view showing a limited number of average priced used cars). Bud Billings had been retired for a few years. I won't speculate any further, but it might be worth a second look. I also find articles that refer to Markham Auto at the same address.

taking the safe, just to look like a robbery????
how long did it take these monsters to do all this from start to finish?
Who was in the house besides the children?

Yes. These systems are very capable.

Who knows if he left his master password login from a remote location.

If I remember correctly I think Ashley had taken over a lot of the business activities or businesses themselves and I also think I remember seeing that the Billings were partners in the car lot with Ashley's in-laws the Markham's

Talk about weirdness, and three degrees of separation... not saying this means anything to the investigation (most probably does not)

But, since someone brought it up in the thread...

earlier today, I thought about 5th Dimension being a shady off the books and clearly profitable 'enterprise'...

First of the shop, then a seedy looking lot FULL of old beater cars right next door... hmmm...

I looked up who owns the 5th Dimension bldg... looks okay to me, in fact has been on market, but then I looked for who owns that suspiciously available "abandoned" lot... it is owned by Poldon LLC, controlled by Johnnie Arlene Jones and Al P. Qualls. Qualls family recently put that entire property up (through Poldon) as security to keep one Jimmy L. Ates out on bail. He is a convicted murderer who got released due to the FBI's lead bullet analysis science being overturned, but who will be retried. Weird stuff.

Is that "Abandoned" lot worth looking into, and at least getting cleaned out, for the 'chop/shop' or car ring angle? (the property shows up as empty lot on tax rolls, but clearly *something* is going on there!)

On the 5 o'clock news tonight, WEARTV said the family didn't want to say where the children are staying because they are concerned for their safety. Is there still a threat? Is that pretty standard especially since some are witnesses?

What if this is more of a "white collar' crime -- and the blue collars were the ones recruited to carry it out! Kinda like a hit to gain access to that safe and there was going to be a hefty pay out! Makes sense for the lot of them, low income jobs, familes and kids to support. They MIGHT not have been caught had not been for surveillence. I am not alluding that Mr. Halford is behind this. Personally, that would make a made for tv plot -- they would interogate the people who were hired to carry out crime, next focus in on the person "funding" it to gather as much evidence as possible.

Possible Byrd Billings has business interests that others wanted, others with a lot of money - and with a lot to gain or loose???

Whatcha think on this one????

This was one of my first thoughts. Murder for hire with the payoff being the safe they stole. That way they didn't have to put up any money up front for the murder.

I'm not a local to this case, so it's hard for me to have any advance info..

One thing I keep wondering is this- IF the motive wasn't money but to totally destroy the Billings for some laundry list of wrongs and or/ simply perceived wrongs by a throng of mostly unrelated people, then I think we must ask ourselves the obvious:

What did the this couple value above all else, as far as we know?
Their children.

Why, then, didn't we see a scenario similar to the Dr, Petit family murders, where he had to have known at some time that his wife and at least one daughter endured sexual crimes before being burned alive?

Are these killers somehow gentler by leaving the children alive but parentless? I don't think so unless women are perhaps deeply involved. Women usually kill their own children, not other peoples'. ( with a few very notable exceptions).

I don't think there is ONE MOTIVE. I think there were multiple motives: Revenge, vengence, outrage, emotional derangement, and money.

The fact that that many children were in the house, mostly disabled, and none of them were harmed as far as we know tells me that more than likely, the killing was done quickly and with a specific reason.
I just don't know what the reason or reasons were, not totally.

There was a comment on local news, I think yesterday, that their building had an eviction noticed attached.

Pamela Long and Hugh Gregory Wiggins from Lafourche Parish La.got a marriage license in Okaloosa Co. Fl. on Jan. 9th 2009.

Sounds like a lover's spat, then restraining order. I once sat on a jury for a case like that in Texas many moons ago...

CHuck

Yup, she also has spousal restraining orders with one of her many hubbies, that go both directions (i.e. she is plaintiff, then he is)

Strange, both Purshue Auto Sales AND Markham Auto Sales are listed in the Yellow Pages at the same address on Pace, but with different phone numbers.
Purshue is 850-469-0100
Markham is 850-435-2900
