Fotis Dulos Charged With Capital Murder in Missing Connecticut Mom’s Disappearance

Jan 7, 2020

Fotis Dulos, the husband of a suburban Connecticut mother of five who vanished after dropping her children off at school in late May, has been charged with capital murder, murder and kidnapping in his estranged wife's disappearance, State Police said Tuesday

His girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, Connecticut State Police said. Both were taken into custody safely and without incident. They had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of evidence tampering and hindering prosecution in the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, whose remains have not been found.

Fotis Dulos' lawyer Norm Pattis told reporters outside his client's Farmington home Tuesday that he had just learned of the arrest warrant and said two other arrests [Troconis and Mawhinney] were happening simultaneously -- one on a charge of murder, another on a charge of conspiracy. No details on the third individual named in a warrant were immediately available from police.

[..]

"I'm not surprised that the state decided to bring the charge," his current lawyer Pattis said Tuesday. "I haven't seen the warrant. I'll be surprised if they can win it. Mr. Dulos contends he was not involved and I don't think the evidence will show that he was."

For her part, Troconis' bond was set at $2 million. No details on her arraignment were availbale. News 4 has reached out to her attorney for comment.

Jennifer Dulos case: Fotis Dulos, Troconis and former attorney charged in murder

Jan 7, 2020

State police are scouring courthouses in Hartford looking for Mawhinney.

Sources said state police detectives showed up at the Family Court in Hartford looking for Mawhinney at around 1 p.m. A court clerk looked up information and told them that he was scheduled to be at the civil court across the street, sources said. The detectives immediately went to the civil court, but were told that he had just left.

A representative from Mawhinney's office said she heard about his potential arrest on a conspiracy to commit murder and called the clients that had scheduled court dates to report that he was having a "personal emergency" and likely wouldn't make it. The woman had no official word on whether Mawhinney had been charged, she said. "He showed up for work as usual this morning," she said.

Soon after Fotis Dulos was originally charged in his own wife’s disappearance, Mawhinney requested to be removed as his civil attorney.

Jennifer Dulos case: Fotis Dulos, Troconis and former attorney charged in murder

Jan 7, 2020

Soon after Fotis Dulos was originally charged in his own wife’s disappearance, Mawhinney requested to be removed as his civil attorney.

William Murray replaced Mawhinney and represented Fotis Dulos in the two-day civil trial last month in Hartford. On Tuesday, Murray said he believes his client is innocent.

"I've probably known him since August, I don't think he did it," Murray said. "I think he's innocent. Something weird obviously went on, but I'd be interested in seeing what the arrest warrants say."

Murray does not believe the murder charge will impact the lawsuits.

"The new arrest shouldn't affect Mr. Dulos' credibility as a witness in the trial," Murray said.

Shortly after Fotis Dulos was taken into custody, New Canaan police tweeted “Justice!”

Pattis arrived at Dulos’ Farmington home about 10 minutes before state police arrived. He said “a well-placed rumor seemed credible enough for me to come here.”

Pattis said he was not surprised the state decided to bring the charge. “I will be surprised if they can win it. Mr. Dulos contends he was not involved and I don’t think the evidence will show that he was.”

The arrests brought praise from Karen Jarmo, chief executive officer of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

“Jennifer Farber Dulos was one of 14 individuals killed by an intimate partner in Connecticut in 2019. We applaud the arrest of those suspected of involvement in her death and thank all of the law enforcement agencies, federal, state and local, and the State’s Attorney’s office for their diligence in ensuring that these persons are held accountable for their deplorable actions,” Jarmo said in a statement.

Fotis Dulos’ former attorney arrested at gunpoint in Jennifer Dulos case

Jan 7, 2020

TOLLAND — A South Windsor lawyer was arrested at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon in connection with the Jennifer Dulos disappearance, according to a source close to the case.

Kent Douglas Mawhinney, a former lawyer for Fotis Dulos, was detained at gunpoint during a traffic stop in Tolland late Tuesday afternoon.

Mawhinney, who represented Fotis Dulos in the $2.5 million lawsuits filed by his mother-in-law, is expected to be charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the case.
[..]
Mawhinney had previously been charged with violating a protective order in his own divorce. He was accused of having Fotis Dulos contact his estranged wife on his behalf, according to an arrest warrant from last year.

‘I Wasn’t Cleaning Jennifer’: Macabre Details Abound in Michelle Troconis Arrest Warrant

Jan 7, 2020

[..]
But according to police in Hartford, Connecticut, the alleged murderer had a little help from that same onetime open girlfriend, Michelle Troconis. The former lovers were both arrested on Tuesday. Dulos was charged with his wife’s murder. Troconis was also charged with murder over Jennifer’s months-long disappearance.

Law&Crime obtained copies of both arrest warrants—which, if they are to be believed, paint a dizzying picture of murder, malice and incompetence at the resulting would-be cleanup and coverup. For a detailed writeup of the Dulos police document, see the in-depth article here.

A great deal of the Troconis arrest warrant contains standard repetition of the facts alleged—and direct verbiage—of the warrant for Dulos. But each also contains their own, intertwining, set of alleged and shocking facts.

According to police, investigators first reached out to Troconis on May 24, 2019–and left multiple messages that went unanswered. Troconic was arrested on June 2, 2019 on charges related to “the disposal of evidence in Jennifer’s disappearance along Albany Avenue in Hartford.”

[..]

At one point, police told Troconis that Dulos had killed his wife and involved her in the cleanup process.

”That’s like even worse,” she allegedly replied, “I hate him because of that.”

An officer then pressed a bit harder: “He got you in trouble.”

To which Troconis allegedly replied:

But I was cleaning the house. I wasn’t cleaning Jennifer.

Read the Fotis Dulos Arrest Warrant

Jan 7, 2020

Fotis Dulos, the 52-year-old estranged husband of Jennifer Dulos, a New Canaan woman who has been missing for more than seven months, has been arrested and charged with murder, felony murder and kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of his wife.

His bond has been set at $6 million and he will be arraigned Wednesday in Stamford, according to his attorney, Norm Pattis.

After reviewing the arrest warrant, Pattis said they were relieved they had something concrete to fight back against and that his client denies the charges against him.

"We are obviously chastened by the fact that the state thinks there is sufficient evidence to pursue Mr. Dulos for such serious crimes but frankly we are very encouraged by our preliminary review of the warrants," Pattis said.

Jennifer Dulos Case: Read the Kent Mawhinney Arrest Warrant

Jan 7, 2020

A local attorney who represented Fotis Dulos in civil cases and is described by police as a "close personal friend" to Fotis has been charged in connection with the disappearance of Fotis' estranged wife Jennifer Dulos.

Kent Mawhinney, 54, was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Bond was set at $2 million.

Jennifer has been missing since May 24, 2019.

Fotis was arrested on murder charges in the case Tuesday. His girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

[..]

Mawhinney denied having contact with either Dulos or Troconis on May 24. However, investigators found that his cell phone "pinged" in the area of the Fore Group offices between 7:29 a.m. and 8:22 a.m., suggesting he was in the office as Troconis had claimed.

Police also presented evidence from the Windsor Rod & Gun Club in East Granby, a club Mawhinney helped establish.

According to the warrant, two members of the club were walking through the woods on May 18 when they found a large pit in the ground. The hole was covered by two barbecue grates, and "small branches and leaves had been placed on the grill grates to hide the pit beneath." The men said the hole was about two feet wide and six feet long and resembled a human grave. They also observed two unopened bags of Lime.

One of the men later reported the hole to police. According to the warrant, the witness later realized that Mawhinney was involved in the Jennifer Dulos case, and that he would have had access to the property, and brought this information to police.

Jennifer Dulos Case: Who is Attorney Kent Mawhinney?

Jan 7, 2020

[..]

Mawhinney was arrested twice by South Windsor police in 2019. The first arrest was reported to police on Jan. 21 for which Mawhinney was arrested for sexual assault (spousal/cohabitating relationship), disorderly conduct, and unlawful restraint, South Windsor police said. The second arrest stemmed for a protective order violation that was put in place as a result of the first arrest, police said. He attempted to use a third party to contact the victim, which was a violation of the order, according to police.

A secretary from his law firm told NBC Connecticut that Mawhinney was in court practicing as an attorney as recently as Tuesday morning in Hartford.
[..]

State police confirmed Tuesday afternoon just after 3:30 p.m. that Mawhinney had been arrested. They said the court-ordered bond was for $2 million.

Lee Gold represented Mawhinney in those previous charges earlier in 2019. Gold said he expects to represent him on any new charges and was waiting to hear from police.

The arrest warrant for Michelle Troconis states bluntly there are “indications that Jennifer Dulos is not alive.” The Chief Medical Examiner concluded “Jennifer Dulos had sustained an injury, or multiple injuries, which he would consider “non-survivable”
