MILFORD — Jose Morales has a new lawyer, but he doesn’t yet have a defense.
[.....]
He appeared at Superior Court in Milford Tuesday standing next to his new lawyer, Edward Gavin, before Judge Peter Brown.

Gavin told Brown that he and his staff have done “yeoman’s work” reviewing roughly 90 percent of nearly quarter of a million pieces of evidence in the case.

But he has yet formulated a strategy.

“It’s still too early,” he said after the brief court appearance, at the end of which the judge continued the case to July 12.
[.....]
At a court appearance for Morales in May a prosecutor said investigators had received many leads in the disappearance, but none had panned out.

Flyers alerting the public to the hunt for missing toddler Vanessa Morales still hang in windows of Main Street Ansonia businesses on the one year anniversary of her disappearance from her home in Ansonia, Conn. on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

The man charged in the killing — Vanessa’s father, Jose Morales — has not been charged in connection with the baby’s disappearance.

But after Morales appeared in court briefly Tuesday, Holloway’s family members said that he must know where Vanessa is if he killed Holloway — and that it’s upsetting not to know more by now.

7/12/22 Update: During Morales’ court appearance, Judge Peter Brown ordered Ansonia police to turn over a car owned by Holloway, to James Sheehy, a lawyer appointed by a probate judge to administer her estate, once cops take photos of it if they haven’t already. Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Stein & Morales’ lawyer, Edward Gavin, agreed to the request. Stein told the judge that there are still some “lingering disclosure issues” being handled by his and Gavin’s offices. The lawyers agreed to continue the case to 10/12/22.

Yes, he has a defense attorney that can visit him at the jail for a good reason and does not need copies of the written materials inside his jail cell! This man has not issued a single statement about the health and welfare of his child -- most likely because she's not missing to him since he knows where she is. The victim's family is still missing baby Vanessa, 3 yrs later!

The next time a man appears in court, the Ansonia woman he is accused of killing will have been dead for more than three years.

Jose Morales, 45, appeared in state Superior Court in Milford Monday morning. The case was continued to Jan. 10, 2023 while his lawyer, Edward Gavin, reviews the evidence in the case.

However, a judge denied Morales' request to review some of the evidence from his jail cell.

...

Gavin said he had already gone through 248,000 pieces of evidence before receiving eight additional discs of discovery from Stein on Monday.

Friday, Dec. 2 marks the three-year anniversary of baby Vanessa Morales’ disappearance from her Ansonia home.

She would be a toddler now, at just about four years old. Police are continuing to search for little Vanessa, but her whereabouts are still unknown.

10/12/22 Update: Next pretrial hearing on 10/24/22. Might be a continuance of hearing on 10/12/22. 10/24/22 Update: Morales appeared in tan prison scrubs & a shaved head for the brief hearing Monday. Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney Howard Stein told Judge Peter Brown the state is in the process of disclosing a "plethora of digital evidence" to defense attorney Edward Gavin. Gavin said he had already gone through 248,000 pieces of evidence before receiving eight additional discs of discovery from Stein on Monday. Before concluding the hearing, Gavin told Judge Brown that his client had requested the written materials in the case to be turned over to him while in custody. Morales is being held at the Cheshire Correctional Institution in lieu of a more than $5 million bond. Brown denied the request, telling Morales that Gavin could review the evidence with him. The case is continued to 1/10/23 while his attorney reviews the evidence in the case.

I don't understand this ruling. Surely a defendant has the right to see the evidence that will be used against him. This bodes ill for any future appeal overturning a conviction (if Morales is indeed convicted.

I can't decide if the little girl is dead or if he gave her to someone to raise. Any thoughts?
