I'm at work, otherwise I'd ask DH. He'd tell me down to last molecule.:tantrum:

Nothing like having a resident chemist at the ready! #Nerdland #awesomeness

Maybe you can ask him later? :please:

Sorry, I had to ask! :drumroll:

Took me awhile to catch up. I think its lye they use to dispose bodies and not lime. We have ran across vats of lye in other cases also.

Lye is potassium hydroxide, and is very basic (high on the pH scale, opposite of acidic). Although this is true, IIRC, that's not what the "sources" told the media.

Chief Lanier refused to confirm anything other than the garbage bags, FWIW.

Any of these possibilities make my heart hurt for Relisha!

:banghead:

What I was trying to say....was lime doesn't dissolve bodies....that lye does. That's how they get rid of the dead animals they pick up off the road.

He might have bought lime, thinking it would do the same as lye.

Lime is Calcium Oxide - they are different chemical compounds.

(Removed info re: wrong chemical compound)

Here's a fact sheet on lime (it's still pretty basic - pH 12.4)
http://www.lime.org/documents/publications/free_downloads/fact-properties2007rev.pdf

For comparison (even though we don't have anything from LE/MSM stating klt purchased lye) re: potassium hydroxide:

pH table:
http://www.miamisci.org/ph/hhoh.html

Please note, I was incorrect - lye is potassium hydroxide, not sodium hydroxide. My apologies, I will edit my previous posts! :blushing:

ETA:
It appears that lye is a term that is used interchangeably (by so me) to refer to (historically) potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), hence the confusion.

I am too far removed from my chem major days to be certain, so I really hope for a post from southsleuth with some expert input.

:sigh:

We expect to hear from police at 3:30p about the continuing search for Relisha Rudd @Wtop

https://twitter.com/ClohertyWTOP

Thanks so much. I hope we learn a bit more today. LE has done a superb job not only with the search but keeping us informed. Helps to keep little Relisha's name out there. IMO

The lime (Calcium Oxide) he purchased will have been for Relisha's body, mistakenly thinking it quickens decomposition. It does not. It will be helping preserve her body so if she is found soon the extent of Tatum's crime and anyone who aided him may yet be discovered.

I was thinking his first visit to the park after buying the bags was just an attempt at distraction, and Tatum had actually disposed of her somewhere else. But when I heard about the lime and the photo he kept of her, I changed my mind. The mistake about the lime shows he was cunning but not too bright, and the photo suggests to me he wouldn't have wanted to have Relisha too far away when he killed himself.

So I think he has buried Relisha about a mile away from where he was found. I reckon he'd think that was a safe distance. The limes suggests she will be buried and not in water. Hopefully, the lime might start to damage or discolor surrounding vegetation and little ones' gravesite will become visible. I'm not sure of the effect of Calcium Oxide on plants. I suppose it depends on what they are.

I think it will suppress the smell of the decay.

I use lime on a part of my yard to prevent umm forget what it is called, from growing. Anyway, to lower the PH. Oh moss. :floorlaugh:

Lime is very alkaline. It's what they use to make hydrangeas turn pink. If the soil is acidic, like here in the PNW, they will be blue. If you want pink blooms you have to add lime to the soil.

Lime will burn skin, but it actually slows decomp. It actually pulls water out of the body and surrounding soil and will mummify the body. But it does suppress odor. I think KT thought it would throw off cadaver dogs. From my reading a good dog will still smell the decomp, but it might make it harder. Maybe one of our SARS experts can weigh in on that.

Another thing, when lime reacts with water it releases heat. I wonder if that's why LE was using FLIR. I don't know how long that reaction will continue to release heat though. If Relisha has been buried since March 2nd, it may be too late for FLIR. :(

Anyway, I'm not caught up yet, so back to reading I go.

I am trying to remain positive but feel like we are just passing the time waiting for police to find the correct spot for the excavation. Do they use any technology devices to help identify what is underground? Plus I wonder if they are finished with the water areas ? Wish he had the decency to have left a note.

This is very very O/T.......... but I've had some really weird luck lately. Last week spur of the moment I bought a 1$ Keno ticket, won $25. Decided to take Grandaughter to dinner with it Friday night, we walked, on the way, as we walked I kept finding $5 dollar bills laying between the sidewalk and the road. Found 36$ in all. I gave her DGD $5. Decided to blow it on lotto tickets all weekend:facepalm::floorlaugh: As soon as General Hospital is over my landlord and I are going to Motor City Casino. Hope my luck holds out. This is not a april fools. Totally true.

I Hope when I get back Relisha is found!!!!!

And Mama has a brand new set of bracelets.

Awesome. Good Luck :seeya:

New time perhaps...

Before I read the written news reports, I thought he purchased Lye. I was surprised to hear it was Lime. I think he bought the wrong stuff.

Yes... we used scoop in the back to dig a hole to bury the horse.
Then we used the loader with a chain to move the horse. :scared:

They can use the "front thing" (loader) to lift or move heavy objects like a log or fallen tree trunk. The scoop in the back is used for the more obvious task of opening up a hole in the ground or digging a trench.

WTOP RADIO NEWS says within the hour but they also reported there is no sign of Relisha.

I want to watch the presser but I feel that if there's no new information, I will be disappointed all over again.
