St Louis John Doe 1992 - DNA Doe Project Cases

The skeletonized remains of a small build, white male was located in the inner-city of St. Louis, MO in a burned out vacant business building. The victim’s hair is described as being blonde/brown, short to medium length, and somewhat straight. He had crooked teeth on the right upper side and had four fillings. He was possibly left handed.
The victim was wearing a black rain coat, a pink shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and striped Fruit of the Loom boxers (size 30-32). He had a shoe insole of size 8 1⁄2 to size 9. A white t-shirt with a Myrtle Beach logo was in his possession.

Mathilda’s (Ottawa County Jane Doe) identity has been confirmed. Now we know that her name was Shelly Rae Kephart, also known as Shelly Rae Christian. There are a few photos of her on Charley Project. She was reported missing but was not on Codis.

“The 29-year-old went missing from Minnesota in 1993.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says DNA samples taken from Kephart’s family were compared to the DNA profile obtained from the 1994 homicide victim known as Matilda.

Matilda was positively identified as Shelly Rae Kephart.

The sheriff’s office says they remain hopeful that the identification of Kephart will provide closure for the family and offer investigative direction for cold case detectives”.

Matilda Ottawa Co Jane Doe 1994 - DNA Doe Project Cases

The DNA profile of the remains indicated North Atlantic and French-Canadian ancestry – not Hispanic as was originally thought. Starting with second and third cousin matches, the dedicated investigative genetic genealogists with the DNA Doe Project worked their way through Christian’s family tree until they came across a missing person’s report from Minneapolis from October, 1993 that seemed like a good match to the Jane Doe. Detectives from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department contacted relatives of Shelly Rae Christian and were able to obtain DNA confirmation of the relationship.

Team leader Matthew Waterfield said, “This case proved trickier to solve than it initially appeared, with our highest workable match sharing only 128cM with Shelly. However, our team was able to identify a couple born in Iowa in the 1840s as ancestors of the then unknown woman, which provided the first breakthrough in the case. In an attempt to confirm that this was the right person, we found a German baptismal record from the mid 1800s that tied a hitherto mystery DNA match to a separate ancestral line of hers, which confirmed that Matilda Doe was in fact Shelly.”

Wonder who the 11 are?

Actually now we know that Matilda and Ada both of Michigan and both are thought to be the victims of the same alleged serial killer were among 11 identified but not announced. Also Jefferson County John Doe was confirmed to be identified by Doe Network and also Bellwood Jane Doe (Ottawa, Canada) has her profile on Canada Unidentified removed.

Ah no, sorry for my phrasing, just Matilda identified as Shelly Christian and Ada Doe identified as Stephanie Judson, both victims found in Michigan in 1990-ies.

Detectives have not ruled out the possibility the woman may have been one of 11 unsolved prostitute killings in Ottawa, Kent and Muskegon counties in the mid-1990s.

Also Ramsey county Jane Doe (Minnesota) and Gwinnett County John Doe 2003 (Georgia) both have very good highest matches. They have a good chance to be identified by now.
