Heading to the federal court sentencing of #Tsarnaev friend Khairullozhon Matanov for obstructing marathon bombing investigation.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 28m28 minutes ago
Settling into Matanov sentencing, friend of #tsarnaev brothers. Faces 30 months for destroying computer records, lying to FBI.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 14m14 minutes ago
Matanov enters court, handcuffed and in prison khakis.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 26m26 minutes ago
He is here in tan prison garb, his hair is cut shorter.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 11m11 minutes ago
Judge addresses Matanov directly, confirming the defendant has read all the paperwork related to his plea deal.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 10m10 minutes ago
Matanov is the cab driving buddy of #Tsarnaev brothers who took them to dinner the night of marathon bombings. Later deleted computer files.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 8m8 minutes ago
Judge William Young is reviewing sentencing guidelines with attorneys on both sides.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 6m6 minutes ago
Matanov' lawyer says he is concerned about the later collateral effects on his client; possible deportation.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 5m5 minutes ago
US atty Carmen Ortiz and FBI ASAC Vincent Lisi are in the courtroom.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 3m3 minutes ago
The lawyers have agreed on a 30 month prison sentence for the Matanov plea; judge says that's longer than the max 27 months he can impose.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 25m25 minutes ago
Matanov agrees to 30 months, but no terror enhancement so can apply for immigration in later years. Judge takes issue though.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 23m23 minutes ago
If Matanov has no terror enhancement, faces 27 months under sentencing guidelines. Judge young always caps at top end of guidelines.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 22m22 minutes ago
So Judge saying if no terror enhancement, he won't accept plea deal. Up to Matanov to choose whether to fight terror enhancement.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 21m21 minutes ago
If he accepts it, case ends today. If fights it, for principle reasons to show he not terror, Judge won't accept plea deal of 30 months

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 16m16 minutes ago
Interesting legal issue as Matanov is choosing to fight terror enhancement. But if he's successful he could spoil his plea agreement.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 14m14 minutes ago
He's be fighting it to oppose the classification of a terrorist. Would affect his prison classification, also immigration classification.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2m2 minutes ago
Matanov lawyer: this case is different than those of other #Tsarnaev pals. Judge seems skeptical; says all men destroyed computer files.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 11m11 minutes ago
Atty sayin Matanov wasn't lying to cover up a terror investigation: “What he was really trying to do was distance himself as a scared man.”

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 11m11 minutes ago
But Judge Young saying Matanov could have had a trial on that.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 57s57 seconds ago
Attorney: Matanov will speak here today and admit that what he did was wrong.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 4m4 minutes ago
Attorney: Matanov wasn't hiding evidence, just scared and distancing himself from the #Tsarnaev brothers when he lied to investigators.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2m2 minutes ago
Matanov's atty suggests his client didn't entirely understand initial plea deal. Judge Young is baffled; asks, do u want plea back?
- No.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 1m1 minute ago
Judge Young is openly displeased w/ how both sides handled this plea deal prior to its arrival in his courtroom.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2m2 minutes ago
AUSA Garland: Matanov's lies about #Tsarnaev brothers' whereabouts post-marathon directly impeded the bombing investigation.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 48s49 seconds ago
“In every aspect of this, Mr. Matanov’s obstruction involved a federal crime of terrorism,” AUSA Scott Garland says.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 25s25 seconds ago
Says Matanov lied about #Tsarnaev brothers' whereabouts after bombings, destroyed his computer evidence showing support jihad.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 33s33 seconds ago
“What the government was forced to do was determine whether it had to look at Mr. Matanov more closely or not.”

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Judge tells Matanov he can speak.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
Matanov stands to address Judge: “I want to apologize to lying to FBI. It was wrong." Has hands on desk in front of him.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
"I want to apologize for lying. It was wrong. I'm not a sympathizer of any terrorist organization." - Matanov

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Matanov stands as judge tells him "you are entitled to an explanation, sir."

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
"I do not support, and I am not a sympathizer of any terrorist organization. That's all I have to say.”

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Judge: we agree you didn't know about this bombing beforehand. But all we wanted was for u to help us out, give us a hand. But you didn't.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Judge: you've lived among us Americans but you don't understand us - our sense of duty to each other.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Matanov is stone-faced as the judge lectures him. He nods as judge describes the horror of the bombings.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Judge tells Matanov: you have failed in your duty to humanity.

ilton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
After that, Judge still finds the need for terror enhancement. That sets guidelines at 151 months to 188 months.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
A lot of this academic. Matanov plead under agreement to 30 months. But it can have an impact on prison classification, immigration status

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
So judge sentences him to 30 months, 36 months supervised release, Judge restricts him from capitalizing on $ for his story since bombs

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
Judge, “All we asked you was to give us a hand. All we wanted was for you to help us out, and you didn’t do that.”

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
"Instead, you gave these officers a swerve," Judge says.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
Matanov goes to sit down but lawyer makes him stand as Judge admonishes him.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
Judge going over how people ran to Marathon finish line to help, to Twin Towers, how teachers stayed with students at Newtown.

Milton Valencia ‏@MiltonValencia 2h2 hours ago
"I'm not talking about a duty to country. I'm talking about a duty to humanity. You failed that." Orders Marshals escort Matanov from court.

Jim Armstrong ‏@JimArmstrongWBZ 2h2 hours ago
Matanov is led out of court in handcuffs and leg shackles. That's it.

I still cannot understand why in DTs trial, that his sister in law Katherine wasn't made to speak and give evidence. Mind you, I still cannot believe she hasn't been charged herself considering she was googling about what wives of a martyr get in heaven and obviously knew about her husbands plans way before the Boston Bombinhs. Tsarnaev Friend Gets Prison for Misleading Investigators

"Matanov saw photographs released by the FBI three days after the attack, but did not immediately call authorities. He went to police the next morning and gave them the Tsarnaevs' names, address and phone numbers, but by then the brothers had killed an MIT police officer and engaged in a wild gun battle with police in Watertown. Tamerlan was killed, while Dzhokhar escaped in a stolen car and was found later that day hiding in a boat stored in a backyard....

Susan Borts, a woman who corresponded with Matanov and visited him in prison, traveled from her home in Portland, Oregon, to support him during his sentencing hearing.
"My personal opinion is the charges were excessive," she said after the hearing. "It's a shame. He loves this country and wants to stay. He was one year away from naturalization."..."
