Well in Afghanistan they have to make crude weapons with whatever is handy (very little money, limited supplies). To me that just says it is a relatively simple device, not that it is foreign terrorists.

But the point of the statement is that we should not be ruling out foreign attack either just because the bomb appears simple, citing a precedent for use of this device type in Afghanistan.

Yeah.

There's a big reviewing stand with invited guests and other VIPs on one side of the street, with tight security. There's a temporary bridge across the street so the media cameras can get a good shot of runners coming to the finish line.

All the other areas are open for spectators to line up 5 or 6 deep to watch people finish. Usually the way it works is even if you're in the back, when they spot your person finishing, you get to rotate to the front. Unless you happen to be lined up with a bunch of asshats or something, but most people are pretty decent.

Lots of people are just generally cheering everybody. Lots of rotating in and out. Lots of partying, especially after the Red Sox win.

I is a miracle that more people weren't killed in the crush and wave of people trying to exit the stands.

The pressure cooker bomb is a method specifically taught in the Islamic militant "training camps" in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier region hence the reason it is popular among the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan.

It was also suggested in the "do it yourself jihad" handbook.

I like what the terrorism expert on cnn said, if you are used to bombs in middle east this will look like a foreign bomb plot. If you are used to seeing bombs in the states this will look like a home grown organizatrion or individual. It has elements of both

CBS is saying again the profilers think this is a lone wolf type similar to Eric Rudolph (the Atlanta Bomber that hit a few targets over several months, one of his bombs sent shrapnel through the window of a restaurant I frequented).

Talking head on CNN likened these bombs to the ones that Eric Rudolph made (Olympic Park bomber).

Don't know if it was the same clip I saw Surfie, but the former assistant director of the FBI was on (Tom, iirc last name was something like Housted??). He said it that was his impression re the Olympic Park bombing.

The mailboxes are gone, the parking meters and at least one of the streetlights are gone, the trees are stripped, broken, and burned...lots of damage like that.

Although I'm not positive you have the exact same location there. The first photo is in front of marathon sports. The second one looks more like in front of Starbucks? I'm just not sure.

eta: on further examination, I think it probably is the same spot, just looking the other direction. So many landmarks eliminated that it's really hard to be sure.

This is not the person I looked at last night. His roommates are speaking out on his behalf. This kid looks like a kind young man. This is the first I'm seeing his name so I'll have to research more before I believe he's involved one way or the other. Again, he's not the person I came across last night...

It's 755 Boylston. It's mainly luxury apartments, with Starbucks and a restaurant on the ground floor. I think there might be a couple of professional offices on the second floor. Typical Back Bay commercial/residential building.

The apartment website has photos of what the roof looks like. Again, very typical of Back Bay.

I do not know if this is the case, but for large events some cities remove mailboxes and the like temporarily, so as to attempt to thwart mailbox bombs.

BTW, here is the map that I have created, based on photo analysis and reports. I think the bomb locations I have marked are pretty accurate.
