Surfside condo collapse live updates: Demolition planned for Sunday night

SUNDAY NIGHT DEMOLITION PLANNED

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Ray Jadallah said the demolition of the rest of the Champlain Towers South building will likely happen some time late Sunday night.

During a briefing he conducted with family members of the unaccounted for at 9:30 a.m., Jadallah said demolition professionals were about 80% finished drilling small holes into the foundation of the building. Once the drilling of those holes is complete, small explosive charges will be placed in them.

Jadallah said a more defined timeline for when the building would be brought down would be established after a meeting with the demolition company and other officials at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re looking at some time late tonight,” Jadallah said.

For clarification. Are they intending to bring down only the remaining part of the condos that were "sheared off" tonight (the bunk beds section), or the sheared off section AND the left side that we see.

TIA.

As a layperson, I'm thinking some may think just the first... but......... I dunno. I haven't seen MSM flyovers with drones today as to tarps being put on that I read about in one MSM to separate the new from the old.

I still wonder why the only video from next door is of the collapse, (which I see "dust up" already in screen) and not the 10 minutes or so prior (when potential "dust up" from pool collapse happened.

We have heard of phone calls about the pool deck collapse, have seen the garage entrance video, have heard there were thundering sounds minutes before collapse vs. seconds of collapse?? etc etc etc)

I wonder who did the original release of that video, and why not more has ever been released (not conspiracy theory here, just to help out to figure out timeline that so many are looking at)

ETA: I do hope that the forensics team is co-leading this now at this stage MOO vs. politicians or anyone else. I would hate that politicians are the lead folks in this right now MOO and are leaning on others. I cringe to know how they are deciding on which team to know on such short notice and not having input from many... but this will be a later review after the fact I guess that will be judged worldwide.

I followed the boys in the cave rescue 24/7 a fews years back, and the head of the country allowed the foreign rescuers to be the LEAD.. but then again, that was with many lives involved that they perhaps had much higher percentages of them being alive.

Thanks. I have had a mental paradigm as my brain sees south/north different and keep forgetting that the NAME of the condos is South, vs. when I looked at it for days I kept thinking they were talking about the south towers of that one property. But on that side of Florida, it is the north side of the property named "south" when you look at from the ocean.

DUH.

Grrr, that my brain just didn't get it! Embarrassing as a .Moving on, and perhaps those that only know/are familiar with the beaches/view from water... that those from the West coast of Florida can understand my brain mix-up which led to my query.

I had not seen this survivor video before... was posted yesterday on an MSM

"Maria Li*na Mon*eagudo woke up in her sixth floor apartment of Champlain Towers South to the sounds and sight of her ceiling cracking. She escaped

She saw cracks, got a few things, went down a few flights of stairs from 6th floor where she lived and then heard the building collapse when she was at the 4th floor etc. She said that the security guard met her at the bottom. (Many here wondered if he was alive for testimony, it appears he was alive at that time)

She came from Cuba 50 years ago............ He son also is interviewed in this video. He says she purchased the condo in December and put all her life savings into the condo.

ETA: As with victims of crimes etc, I'm doing a * within their name so that this site doesn't come up in a search years to come to see our WS discussions.

Hey @dixiegirl1035 - - I completely 'get it'. It's like a brain twist. I was born on the West coast of FL, so that is my standard directional basis. The gulf water is West and land is East. Miami & East coast is the opposite and I feel like my brain is doing a 180*.

My very elderly parents live in South Florida, in a condo. If God forbid this happened to their building, and they survived, I would physically restrain them if they wanted to return to a still-standing portion of the building. Yes they have 90 years of irreplaceable photos, valuables and all their belongings there, but I would not trust the integrity of that building. I wouldn't let them take that gamble. Of course it's very tempting to run up there for 10 minutes to grab some things, but if that turned out to be the 10 minutes or 10 seconds in which that portion suddenly collapsed, they would die horribly.

I, too, had hopes that in the first day or two or maybe three that there could be survivors in the rubble. After 10 days, even if anyone survived being crushed or otherwise injured, no one can be alive. No water, no food, oppressive heat and humidity, lack of air, bleeding out....it's not possible.

Why bring down the other portion that is still standing? If it falls, particularly if the upcoming hurricane hits Miami, that building could collapse on top of the rubble that is still burying the dead. The authorities want a controlled demolition that hopefully will topple the remaining portion in such a way that it will be easier to find the remains of those who perished.

I live in NY, in a 23- story building two blocks from the beach. Because of the corrosive effects of salt water and so on, we have had numerous projects done on the brickwork and on our terraces. We all grumbled about the cost and the inconvenience, but in hindsight I'm very relieved. The only time the building flooded completely was during SuperStorm Sandy in 2012, and I would gladly pay for an extensive assessment of the foundation here.

IMO there is no conspiracy that purposefully brought down the building in Surfside. It was a perfect storm of things going drastically wrong, and should serve as a wake-up call for the rest of the country where people reside in similar conditions.

I appreciate your well thought out post---- <modsnip: Referenced info was removed> It was a perfect storm of events that in the coming months will be investigated.

Thankfully, there are many phone calls and videos and CCTV that discount MOO and will help in the forensics.

MSM is about 3-5 days on this one to catch what some are seeing and understanding prior that are not allowed without such at WS, but understand that is all well and much appreciated. There have been some in the last 2 days which are from engineers and just now are hitting MSM, which I'm thankful for.

Thank to mods for allowing exceptions and such, and knowing how to separate the wheat from the chaff on some YouTubes.

Surfside first responders describe 'heart-wrenching' search-and-rescue efforts (nbcnews.com)

“We’ll never give up. We’ll look through every single part of the pile,” a first responder said.

SURFSIDE, Fla. — Dr. Alison Thompson gazed at pictures of the missing and dead lining a fence that has become a memorial following the collapse of a Miami Beach-area condo building 10 days ago. Searching through the rubble as one of the first responders, she has found many photographs scattered among the debris.

“That's the heart-wrenching part, when you see the pictures of the kids, or couples,” Thompson, founder of Third Wave Volunteers, told NBC News from the memorial on Friday. “That's what affects us the most because it brings us back to why we're on the pile.”

“We're just looking for the stolen lives,” she said.

As of Saturday, the confirmed death toll of the partial collapse of Champlain Towers South rose to at least 24, with more than 120 people still unaccounted for...

Demolition of remaining Florida condo building to happen 'as soon as possible' (nbcnews.com)

Officials said teams will use a technique called energetic felling, which relies on a series of small detonations and gravity to bring the building down.

Officials said on Sunday that the remnants of a Miami-area condo tower that suffered a devastating collapse will be demolished as soon as possible, though the timeline remains unclear, after engineers declared it unstable.

Search-and-rescue efforts were put on pause at the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, Saturday afternoon as officials worried the unstable structure could come down on crews working the debris pile.

It’s unclear when the rest of the building will come down, though demolition teams are working hard for a quick turnaround, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a news conference Sunday...

Not behind their paywall - great background story on the community of Surfside and of that condo as well as some of the missing. Beautifully written, really helps you visualize what and who this community has lost.

Reading this just brings me to tears: the loss of human life is incomprehensible. The fact that it happened while people were sleeping is horrifying.

This whole scenario is surreal. No doubt, a movie script is already in the works for this.

I wonder if this will affect property values for condos on the beach? There are many, and not only condos, but also hotels. This is huge. I am not so sure about happily checking into our favorite hotel in Daytona, right on the beach, with similar construction, slab cement and rebar.
We have a favourite hotel in Daytona as well. Not sure I can do it right now either. This is such a huge tragedy.

Florida Preps for Elsa: States of Emergency Issued; Crews Could Demolish Remains of Collapsed Condo Sunday Night | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com

Experts at the site of the collapsed Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida, were drilling holes in the building's remains Sunday where charges will be placed and set off to bring the rest of the tower down ahead of any potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa.

“As soon as the preparation is ready, the site is secure and the team is ready to go, we will begin the demolition," Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a news briefing Sunday morning.

She didn't give an exact timeline. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Ray Jadallah told families in a separate briefing that the demolition would likely happen Sunday night, the Miami Herald reported...

It reminds me so much of the Grenfell tower fire - which happened late at night as well when people were sleeping which impeded possible warnings and because of a few unfortunate circumstances, which were all preventable, coming together many people died. Again some of the circumstances were due to cost cutting which took lives.

Speaking of paywalls... If I subscribe to a Paywall MSM, ie. NYTimes, thus removing Paywall for me... then paste the link on WS, will posters here be able to open link without hitting paywall themselves? Hope I made question clear.

BETTYDAVISEYES... Glad you brought this up. "the site is secure"?? I have been reading about demolition of buildings (trying to stay ahead of quickly evolving events) and never read about one being demolished at night. But so far I have gleaned this will be a type of demo that is called "implosion" and used about 1% of the time.
"In the controlled demolition industry, implosion is the strategic placing of explosive material and timing of its detonation so that a structure collapses on itself in a matter of seconds, minimizing the physical damage to its immediate surroundings."
Demolition by Implosion Method - Constro Facilitator
If the choice is to have it done at night (sounds dangerous) decreased visibility, but perhaps easier to control traffic?? IDK Ironic the building came down in the middle of the night, too.
